The Assignment: Evaluation of Use of Behavioral Science Concepts by Two Competing Brands

1. Select a specific product category (e.g., dog food, laptop computers, cola drinks, airlines, perfume, fast food restaurants, automobiles, cosmetics, vacation resorts, cell phones, MP3 players, etc., etc.).

2. Acquire and summarize background information on this product class in terms of each of the following areas (you need not obtain every type of data listed for each area):

Market (size and growth rate of market; segments and their characteristics; number, names, and sizes of firms; shares of market, sales volumes, profitability; and other performance metrics);
Description of the product category (product definition; number of brands; types of variations such as line extensions and sub-product categories; features and benefits; functions and uses; branding and packaging; imagery; stage in product life cycle;, etc.);
CB (consumer decision process, including level of involvement, level of decision making, type(s) of consumer purchasing decision situations, sources of information consulted; criteria used in making a purchase decision and their relative importance; sociocultural and other environmental influences; psychological influences; attitudes; etc.)

Pricing (price range, price points by brand, pricing strategies and techniques, etc.);
Distribution (where sold, types of stores and other distribution channels [including e-commerce], extent of availability, etc.);
Promotion (promotional tools used, messages, media, spend levels, etc.).

3. Select two brands within your product category with very different marketing/promotion strategies. Submit as exhibits promotional materials such as sample print ads, TV/radio commercial transcripts/descriptions/URLs, website materials, packages, and any other relevant marketing artifacts.

Compare each marketing/advertising campaign in terms of the sociocultural and psychological effect it should have on consumers, citing specific behavioral science concepts. Which market segments (demographics, psychographics, and/or behavioral) is each marketer attempting to reach? How is each trying to position the product? How is each marketer trying to appeal to the consumer in behavioral terms?

4. Based upon the above discussion, identify which of the two marketing/advertising campaigns is more effective in application of behavioral science concepts and discuss the reasons for your opinion. This should include an analysis of each marketer’s use of knowledge of CB in 2c above.

Planning American Cities – Assignment Instructions

This project is designed to allow you to synthesize what you have learned about planning American cities this semester. In it, you will pick a city, analyze its existing efforts related to climate change planning, and propose a future course of action for the city to improve its efforts. The particular tasks and guidelines are laid out below.

Introduction

  • Address the topic of the paper, why it is important, and preview some of your main points
  • Think about what your ‘hook’ is; that is, what will get the reader interested right from the beginning

 Background

  • Describe key features of your city’s geography, social and economic history, previous planning efforts,
    and other characteristics that might be relevant to its climate change planning efforts
  • Think of this as orienting a reader who knows little about your city to its situation today
  • For example, if your city is Houston, you’d talk about how it is close to the coast in a low-lying area
    vulnerable to floods and hurricanes; how it is a major oil industry city with boom and bust economic
    cycles; how it has vote Democratic in its urban areas but the region and state are quite politically
    conservative; how it does not have zoning, and so on.

Mitigation Efforts

  • Describe what efforts the city has undertaken to date to reduce its Greenhouse Gas Emissions
  • This task will likely require looking at the city’s Climate Action Plan, Comprehensive Plan, Sustainability Plan or other related plans. You may also find it useful to look at the municipal website and the website of local organizations, newspaper articles, and other sources.

Adaptation Efforts

  • Describe what efforts the city has taken to date to prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate
    change.
  • This task will likely require looking at the city’s Climate Action Plan, Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan
    or other related plans. You may also find it useful to look at the municipal website and the website of
    local organizations, newspaper articles, and other sources.

Gap analysis

  • Identify what you see as the strengths and weaknesses of the city’s climate planning efforts
  • Highlight the gaps in the planning that you feel need to be addressed in the next few years
  • For this task, you may find it helpful to look at some of the climate change planning guidance documents and links available on Blackboard in the Semester Project folder. These references will provide examples of what other cities in the US and elsewhere are doing (or what experts recommend that cities should do) that can help you identify what your city is not doing that it could be doing.

Goals, Data and Policies

  • Lay out some recommendations for
    • updating or adding mitigation and adaptation goals for the city;
    • identifying what types of data the city appears to need to be able to plan effectively; and c)
      innovative polices or actions the city should pursue to reduce emissions and risk

Stakeholders, Implementation and Monitoring

  • Identify the
    • stakeholders that need to be involved in successful mitigation and adaptation planning
      (with a particular eye to identifying stakeholders that have not been involved to date that should be);
    • what you think some of the obstacles to implementing your recommended policies and actions will
      likely be; and
    • what things the city should monitor to track its progress over time.

Compare/contrast Mary in "Lamb to the Slaughter" to one of the women in "A Jury of Her Peers"

For Essay 2, you will write an essay that compares and/or contrasts. Your essay’s focus needs to be on theme and setting and/or characterization; your essay’s focus will depend on which prompt you choose.
(The lessons in Unit 2 will walk you through how to write this essay. Carefuly review all the content in this unit first before writing the essay.)
You may choose one of the following prompts:

  • Compare/contrast Mary in “Lamb to the Slaughter” to one of the women in “A Jury of Her Peers” (Minnie Foster, Mrs. Hale, or Mrs. Peters — or possibly all three), paying particular attention to theme as well as setting and/or characterization, and make an argument about justice and the role of gender.
  • Compare/contrast the parent/child relationships in “Everyday Use” and “Marriage Is a Private Affair,” paying particular attention to theme as well as setting and/or characterization, and make an argument about the conflicts that can exist between generations. 
  • Compare and/or contrast the grandmother in “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” and Mathilde in “The Necklace,”  paying particular attention to theme as well as setting and/or characterization, and make an argument about the pitfalls of pride.
    Again, Unit 2 will cover, in detail, how to write a comparison/contrast essay. In brief, “an essay in comparison and contrast shows how two works are similar to and different from each other” (Abcarian and Klotz 57).

For this particular essay, you must demonstrate your understanding of characterization, setting, and/or theme, which we will also cover in this unit.
Your essay must be between 750-1000 words and adhere to MLA formatting. It needs to quote directly from your chosen text(s) for support, but it should not use any secondary research.
Keep in mind that the comparison/contrast essay should not just summarize the story or stories, nor should it just state how two things are alike and/or different: the essay should move beyond that and also present an original opinion or argument based on those similarities/differences, as you see them.

The Internet is a powerful tool that provides the ability to monitor natural phenomena and disasters that happen all over planet Earth.

In this assignment, you will research resources available on the Internet for monitoring natural phenomena including earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, global climate, and weather.

Based on your research, do the following:

  • Identify a minimum of three different natural phenomena that are typically responsible for natural disasters. Analyze the potential impact of these disasters.

      • What kinds of issues could this technology cause between less-developed countries?
    • Economics
      • How would this technology directly impact the economies of those countries that have the technology versus those countries that do not?
      • Do you predict any indirect impacts? What current evidence supports your position?
    • Disaster Preparedness
      • What types of systems are in place in terms of disaster preparedness related to these monitored phenomena?
  • Summarize your findings. Evaluate how this technology will impact the future of humanity, both positively and negatively. Be sure to consider the political and economic issues discussed in your future predictions.

Support your statements with examples. Use a minimum of six reliable references, two of which should be peer-reviewed articles.

You have read guidelines to help improve your self-concept in the text. Now it is time to apply these to your own life! To do that, you need to set a goal for yourself and then apply the guidelines from the text to help you reach your goal.

For this Journal you are being asked to reflect on improving your self-concept by journaling your responses to the following six questions. Responses are intended to be in a Q&A format and the total assignment should be 500–600 words while incorporating relevant course concepts and terms from the text and citing in APA format.

  1. Define one change you would like to make to your self-perception (how you think about yourself). It might be a behavior or a self-fulfilling prophecy or anything about yourself you would like to alter.
  2. Write down the change you want to make on a card or paper so that you can see it every day. Use strong, affirmative language to motivate yourself: “I will listen more carefully to friends,” or “I will start speaking up in classes,” for example and be prepared to include this statement in your Journal submission.
  3. Refine your general goal by making sure it is realistic and fair. Write out your refined goal using specific language from the text: “I want to show my two best friends that I am paying attention when they talk to me,” or “I want to make one comment in each meeting of one class this week,” for example and format in APA.
  4. Place the card or paper where you will see it often. Each time you see it, repeat the message out loud to yourself. This should help sustain your commitment to making the change.
  5. Observe others who are models for what you want to be. Write down what they do. Use specific language to describe how they communicate: “Tracy nods a lot and repeats back what others say so they know she is listening,” or “James provides examples of concepts in class so that the ideas are more concrete,” for example.
  6. Select contexts that assist you in reaching your goal: “I will talk with my friends in private settings where there are no distractions that interfere with listening well,” or “I will begin speaking up in my Communication course because it is the most discussion-oriented and because other students make a lot of comments there. Later, I will speak up in my sociology course, which combines lecture and discussion.”

Product and Product Marketing

Develop a written proposal outlining a specific product or service idea you have as the product manager for Triangle Solutions. Triangle’s company type and product area have been left unspecified in order to allow you creativity in invention of your own product ideas and exploration of areas of interest in the market. Techniques in Marketing – Discussion Questions

  1. Most businesses market either to businesses or to consumers. This changes the kind of data each type of organization will need to maintain. Define the main differences in building a marketing database for consumers versus businesses. Think in terms of the sources of this data, the differences in data fields, and the kinds of information that are specific to maintaining information about consumers versus businesses. Are the kinds of marketing programs done for consumers different from those for businesses? If so, what are the implications of that for a marketing database?
  2. You are the marketing director of a multichannel retailer selling clothes for children up to age 13. These are high-end products, with an average order of $100 plus. You sell through retail, catalogs, and a Web site. Although you have a lot of transactional information about your customers (products purchased, amount of purchase, date, historical order data), you don’t know very much about the demographics of your customers. Up to now the catalog has only been mailed using response lists of direct mail buyers of similar products. How would you learn about the demographics of your customers? What other kinds of lists would you test? Explain your answers.

Child Labour

Child labour is said to be the involvement of young boys and girls at their tender for hire to work; or be subjected to jobs that does not fit them and not safe for them of their ages.  In the developing countries the economy tends to be that those families make children work to increase their incomes.

When it is not labour does not fit that of a slave, they are paid peanuts with an expectations to do the work equivalent to other workers. On the other hand, these children are subjected to areas of work that are prone to diseases and they are dangerous. The labour in question takes away their childhood thus making it unwanted by them.

They lack a chance for getting education at their childhood. Due to this hard labour, they are always away from school working and a chance of social life is lost.They are not supposed to handle responsibility of their families to a great extent. Parents and guardians are supposed to care for their kids well enough to avoid them being subjected to hard labour. Children are to have freedom till adulthood, a point they can be responsible for anything. Mature roles should not be given to them at tender age.

The main point mostly being checked on, even in developing countries, is that children are supposed to work in that it will not influence their way to education. Several articles have interviewed these children and the results werethat they need to study while still working.

Lack of work takes away ones income. Most of these children’s are involved in hard labour in support of their families.  Every individual engage in work for survive. Lack of this source of having their income, living becomes hard.

When the society is so poor, most of the children’s lack any other choice other than to work. To feed their families children have to work hard. This is mainly caused by economic meltdown in their countries making their parents lack the ability to earn good amount for survival. Survival is so vital to them than gaining education. They choose to assist their families in sacrifice of education life. Much cannot be accomplished unless the level of economy improves.

A developing country has no privileges as developed countries do. The children in question happen to be living in very poor countries in terms of standard of living thus taking different course of life at a different focus points. To us, family’s responsibilities should not be directed to children, but due to a harsher environment there must be such scenarios, because of the countries they live in.

The research outcomes are shocking.  More so, the age is demanding of the children in question working in the third world nations. And, even rich the same children are doing hard labour in these wealthy nations under very prone areas and most of us would not prefer. However, to totally ignore the take on economic problems of almost all families throughout the world of which their kids work so hard. If there were choices for all guardians and parents, surely most of them would prefer the same of what happens to those rich families and how they handle their youngsters.

In addition, most of the companies do this for profit motives. In particular, a firm that is involved in child labour to raise their margins in term of profit will risk an outcome if many discover that the whole work was done through child labour
