Compensation and Reimbursement Plans

One way in which a MCO can control cost, quality, and access is through various structured compensation and reimbursement plans. The two most common examples are fee for service and capitation. Moreover, there are different types of reimbursement systems for inpatient and outpatient services. Answer the following questions in regard to the above information:

  • Examine the three types of inpatient or outpatient reimbursement systems?
  • Evaluate the key advantages and disadvantages of each system from the point of view of a managed care plan and the hospital?
  • What is the difference between capitation and FFS? Evaluate the type of market appropriate for each reimbursement method. Support your answer by providing an example of an MCO using either of these methods.
  • What do you understand by the term “UCR”? With what form of reimbursement is this term associated? Search current information from the Internet and evaluate the use of UCR in the managed care industry.

Reimbursement procedures are complex and detailed, especially those associated with government programs such as Medicare. Part of the regulatory requirements of Medicare is to prevent illegal billing practices such as churning, upcoding, and unbundling. You can search these topics by clicking here. You can also search on federal regulations for reimbursement procedures and fraud and compliance guidelines and education materials.

Based on your research, respond to the following questions:

  • Review the latest enforcement actions on this website. Identify a case where at least one of the following illegal actions was used—churning, upcoding, and unbundling.
  • What are some of the specific examples of actions taken against providers engaged in these practices?

After answering the above questions, read the following information:

P4P is a type of compensation method for providers based on evidence-based practices that promote better quality outcomes. Find at least two online sources of information, such as professional associations and government resources, from the South University Online library or the Internet on P4P compensation programs: one in favor of and one against this type of compensation program for providers.

Now, using the readings this week and the information gathered from the above sources:

  • Explain, in your own words, the negative consequences of P4P program.
  • Describe the market forces making this type of compensation program popular.

Challenges in the Global Business Environment

According to the textbook, ongoing challenges in the global business environment are mostly attributed to unethical business practices, failure to embrace technology advancements, and stiff competition among businesses. Use the Internet to research the code of ethical conduct of one (1) of the following organizations:

  • AT&T
  • Hershey Company
  • Coca-Cola
  • Chevron

Next, use the Internet to research the code of ethical conduct of two (2) similar companies in the same industry as the company you have chosen.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

  1. Specify, in brief, the nature, structure, types of products or service of the business you selected. Examine the information within the company’s code of ethical conduct, and choose three (3) key issues from within the document that you believe are critical for success. Provide a rationale for the response.
  2. Using the three (3) key issues you selected as a benchmark, compare and contrast the codes of conduct of two (2) similar companies within the same industry as your chosen company.
  3. Examine the extent to which the two (2) similar companies you researched have addressed the key issues you selected. Hypothesize two (2) potential positive outcomes for each company if each addresses the key issues in question and two (2) potential adverse effects if each company fails to address these issues.
  4. Propose two (2) techniques that the original company you selected could use in order to ensure that its code of conduct will remain relevant through years of changing economic, political, social, cultural, and technological forces on business and society. Next, evaluate the effectiveness of two (2) methods that the company currently adopts in order to manage environment issues.
  5. Examine two (2) approaches that the original company you selected has taken in order to embrace technological advancements for innovation and thus improve business offerings. Anticipate three (3) potential technological challenges the company could face, and recommend one (1) strategy that the company could use in order to eliminate or minimize each of these anticipated challenges.
  6. Specify at least one (1) one lobbying strategy that the original company you selected has used in an effort to influence national or local government decisions in its favor. Summarize the issue in question, and ascertain whether or not the lobbying effort was appropriate. Justify the response.
  7. Analyze two (2) global corporate citizenship efforts of the original company you selected, and assess the extent to which these efforts are effective in accomplishing the company’s goals.  Examine the manner in which the two (2) global citizenship efforts could contribute significantly to the company’s sustainable development goals.
  8. Use at least four (4) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

The Ninth Circuit Court has received a large number of complaints filed by prisoners claiming that their civil rights are being violated

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Centervale State Penitentiary Management of Prison Violence

The Ninth Circuit Court has received a large number of complaints filed by prisoners claiming that their civil rights are being violated because they are housed in accommodations made unsafe due to the frequent outbursts of violence in the Centervale State Penitentiary. As a result, the Ninth Circuit Court judge has given the governor an ultimatum that if the amount of violence in the prison is not reduced, the prison’s management and leadership will be turned over to the federal government.

The director of prisons is now under scrutiny because it appears that the warden, his administrators, and his staff are not maintaining a safe environment for staff either, as evidenced by the brutal beating of a male staff member during a fight between two prison gangs in the corridor outside the mess hall inside the Centervale State Penitentiary.

As the assistant to the warden’s director of the Penology Research Team, you have been asked to prepare a report that explains penology theory, prison violence, inmate programming, and rehabilitation for the warden and for the director of prisons that the governor will most likely review.

Challenges that you will have to address in your report are many, but primarily, the director of prisons is interested in how prison violence will be reduced by 5% within one year, regardless of the fact that the legislature has just cut even more funding on the corrections system when the prison is understaffed and inmates are in need of programs.

Here’s What You Need to Do . . .

Using APA format and APA guidelines, compose an 8- to 10-page paper using the Argosy University online library resources to address the following:

Define and discuss in detail the goals of penology theory and integrate the discussion with the overarching goal of prison management and leadership. Research US penology theory and practice. Identify and explain five strengths and five weaknesses of the US prison management system as a whole. The Centervale State Penitentiary is an old prison with a limited number of cameras in a few places. It does not have state-of-the-art equipment, and its policies and procedures to counteract prison violence have been in place for decades.

Research penology prison violence reduction plans, policy, and procedure using the Argosy University online library resources. Discuss at least one violence reduction program that has failed and one program that you think might work. Be sure to explain why the program was successful or why it might have failed. The Centervale State Penitentiary has two programs for inmates to work in—the Cafeteria Program and the Prison Grounds Program. No educational programs exist at this time. Propose a course of action to reduce violence by implementing the following: Educational Programming Employee Developmental Training Proactive Supervision Model The brutal beating of Centervale State Penitentiary corrections Officer Brian Belle outraged the public to the extent that some citizens protested against inmates’ rights in the state capitol. Officer Belle suffered a broken leg, a broken arm, eight broken ribs, one broken vertebrae, and a skull fracture, which caused medical professionals to keep him in a medically induced coma for over a month. After more than six months, Officer Belle returned to work, only to face the same situation again in the same corridor under the same policies. Staunchly, Officer Belle maintains his authority in the prison and intends to testify against them at their trial.

Officer Belle constantly receives community support, and the District Attorney’s Office receives constant complaints about how long it is taking to try the inmates charged with assaulting Officer Belle.

Research and explain from a broad perspective how prison violence impacts society. Does prison violence impact society? Be very specific in stating ways in which prison violence might impact society, based on your research findings using credible sources.

Discussing Percents/Decimals/Fractions and Conversions

Task Background: There are different ways of representing the same value of a number. For instance, 0.5 (a decimal) is equivalent to 50% (a percentage) and to 1/2 (a fraction). Conversions such as these are needed in many applicable areas, such as interest on a loan, calculating savings on discounts, measuring an amount of medicine administered to a patient, and buying a certain amount of carpet.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 3–4 paragraphs that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Task Assignment: There are specific procedures to convert a value from a decimal to a percentage (and vice versa), from a fraction to a percentage (and vice versa), and from a decimal to a fraction (and vice versa). Below, you will find four problems in the following areas: Criminal Justice, Business, Medical, and Real Life. Please select any TWO for completion of the task. You must show all steps and every single calculation. Thoroughly explain how and why you did each calculation with complete sentences. Include discussion relating the problem to your own personal experiences or to the real world.

Criminal Justice

There are many important formulas that are used in the field of criminal justice. For example, the Widmark formula is used to calculate the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) at a particular time for an individual. Widmark’s research found that the average man’s body can hold alcohol in even distribution in 73% of its weight. In other words, 73% of a 150-pound man’s body holds all the alcohol he consumes, in even distribution. 73% of 150 pounds = 0.73 × 150 = 109.5 pounds. Widmark found that the average woman’s body can hold alcohol in even distribution in 66% of its weight.

  1. Convert 66% to a decimal and then to a reduced fraction.
  2. Give an example of a particular weight for a woman, and find the average portion of the body that holds the alcohol.

Many interest rates, such as those on car loans, credit cards, and home loans, are given as a percent. If you need to make any calculations with the percent interest rate, however, you must convert the percent to a decimal.

  1. Research and find the interest rate, as a percent, for a particular credit card.
  2. Convert the interest rate percent to a decimal and then to a reduced fraction.
  3. You want to compare your researched rate to another credit card’s interest rate of 12 1/5%.
    • Convert this interest rate percent to a decimal.
    • Compare the 12 1/5% to your researched interest rate, and explain which interest rate is better.

It is important that physicians know how long a medicine will stay in a patient’s body in order to prescribe dosing instructions so that the patient does not overdose. For example, a patient takes a pill that has a dosage of 50 mg. (milligrams) and wakes up the next day with a particular percentage of the medication washed out.

  1. Demonstrate your knowledge of conversions by first choosing a percentage of the medicine that is washed out the next day, and then convert this percentage to a decimal and then to a reduced fraction.
  2. How much medication remains in the body after the percentage amount of your choosing is washed out?

Real Life

When buying mulch for your lawn, you find that it is ordered in square yards. You have the area measurements of your lawn in square feet, which you found by multiplying the length of your yard (in feet) times the width (in feet).

  1. Demonstrate with an example by first giving the length and width of a yard in feet. Since lawns may not have exact whole-number length and width measurements, you must provide an example where the length or the width contains a fractional amount.
  2. Find the area of the yard in square feet.
  3. Convert the amount of square feet to square yards so that you can order the mulch. (Hint: Research how many square feet equals one square yard.)
  4. Please include citions and references.

Food Habits

Part One (Unit 2) For this unit’s Assignment, please complete Activity 2 found on page 32. For this assignment you will create 2 different menus. They should each be for a different cultural or religious group that you learned about in chapter 2. Make sure the meal plan meets the RDAs for each at

Copy and paste the Super Tracker Food Group and Calories Report and the Nutrient Report information into your project so you are able to show the food group comparison and the nutrients totals for each culturally appropriate menu.

If you use Native American as one of your cultural groups, make sure your food selections are different than those given as an example on page 32.

Your finished project should contain 3 parts, your created menus, the Food Group and Calorie Report and the Nutrient Report.

Part Two (Unit 3)Please revisit your completed Assignments in Week 1 (24 hour recall- food journal) and Week 2 (the menus you created). Next, answer the following questions based the foods you provided in both of those Assignments:

  1. List all the complete proteins you consumed.
  2. List all the incomplete proteins you consumed.
  3. Identify which food(s) has the highest quality protein.
  4. Why is it important to spread consumption of good-quality protein throughout the day?
  5. Is protein deficiency common in the United States?

Should Canada bring back the death penalty?

To begin, you are going to briefly discuss the current legal status for the issue in question, and explain what is controversial, or more specifically what the (likely) two competing viewpoints are arguing.  This needs to be from an experimental research perspective, rather than a more societally-focused (i.e. sociological or criminological) perspective.

You will then take a stand, and to back this up, will discuss the latest empirical/experimental research to assist the court in deciding whether your view is valid.  For example, if you chose to discuss whether the sequential lineup was better than the simultaneous one, you would briefly state the two views (though note for topics such as this one, you need to do more than reiterate what is in the text or lecture modules – focus on the latest research), then pick a side, explaining what research supports this side.  So – you do need to address the ‘other side’ in order to refute the arguments that might come from that direction.  As you are writing a court ‘brief’ you will have to write clearly and succinctly so as to get across your key points in quite a limited space.

You need at least 2 solid empirical references, not review papers, or non-experimental – sources.  These experimental papers should be as current as possible, typically the last 5 years.  These articles should come from peer-reviewed psychology journals, not “pop” psych sources, the internet, or books (though you can include information from these other sources in addition to your main 2, but not instead of them). You should incorporate these references into your paper (as discussed below) and end with an overall conclusion on the topic in general. Note that your job is to incorporate this material into your paper by paraphrasing and summarizing the work (while still citing the source appropriately).

In the fast-paced, evolving enterprise environment, there is a need to integrate systems, whether with recently acquired organizations

In the fast-paced, evolving enterprise environment, there is a need to integrate systems, whether with recently acquired organizations or with the latest off-the-shelf technology. The challenge seems insurmountable without some formalized approaches, tools, techniques, and best practices to support the effort. During this capstone project class, you will select a manageable systems integration project so that you will have practice with all phases of the systems integration process, from determining enterprise integration requirements through the final implementation planning.

Project Selection

The first step will be to select an enterprise as the target for your systems integration capstone project, along with a list of the major systems to be integrated within the target organization. This project will be used as the basis for each of the assignments throughout the course and should conform to the following guidelines:

  • Nontrivial: The selected enterprise should be large enough to reflect the need to integrate systems.
  • Domain knowledge: You should be familiar enough with the organization to allow you to focus on its system’s integration needs.

Select an enterprise that fits these requirements, and submit your proposal to your instructor before proceeding further with the assignments in the course. Approval should be sought within the first few days of the course. Your instructor will tell you how to submit this proposal and what notification will be given for project approval.

Assignment Guidelines

For the assignments in this course, you will be developing a comprehensive Systems Integration Design Proposal as your capstone project. Your first task in this process will be to select an enterprise to use as the basis of your project. You will also create the shell document for the final capstone project deliverable, which you will be working on during each unit. As you proceed through each project phase, you will add content to each section of the final document to gradually complete the final project delivery. Appropriate research should be conducted to support the analysis in your report, and assumptions may be made when necessary.

  • Submit the project proposal to your instructor for approval.
  • Create the Systems Integration Project Proposal document shell.

The Impact of Stress on Social Emotional Development

As a caregiver, you will influence the social and emotional development of the infants and toddlers in your care. While caring for infants and toddlers, you may encounter difficult situations that can be emotionally challenging. How you handle stress impacts your overall health and well-being, as well as the well being of infants and toddlers in the environment in which you are providing care. Watch this video on dealing with children who have witnessed violence for an example of how to respond to stressful situations. After viewing the video, submit a journal entry in which you respond to the following questions:

  • How do you typically handle stress and stressful situations?
  • How will you effectively communicate and express your feelings in your work with children?
  • What do your responses tell you about the way you manage your stress? Is there any area of stress management you would like to improve prior to putting yourself in a setting where you are providing care to infants and toddlers?
  • List two strategies that you can implement when working with children who are also experiencing stressful life situations and events.
  • You are encouraged to provide an authentic reflection. Your journal must be a minimum of one page. This journal is viewed only by you and your instructor. Your journal is an informal, reflective piece that does not require citations or APA format. However, if you choose to use resources, please cite them appropriately.

Presidential Election

Despite commonly held beliefs about the popularity of presidents, presidents are elected by the Electoral College. This uniquely American institution consists of representatives of each state who cast the final ballots that actually elect the president. The total number of electors for each state is equal to the number of senators and representatives from that state in the U.S. Congress. The District of Columbia is accorded three electoral votes bringing the total number of votes to 538. Thus, the magic number for winning the presidency is 270 votes.

Research the most recent presidential election using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet and write a paper on the topic. Include the following in your paper:

  • Identify the major issues of concern to voters and compare how each presidential candidate addressed those issues.
  • Summarize information relevant to the issues and the election.
  • Evaluate the validity of each candidate’s arguments.
  • Cite your sources and prepare a title and reference page according to APA standards.

Identify and describe 8–10 different types of specific demonstrative evidence.

  • Address the following in 900–1,200 words:
    • Identify and describe 8–10 different types of specific demonstrative evidence.
    • What can demonstrative evidence be used to show? Explain.
    • Define authentication (Rule 901, Federal Rules of Evidence).
    • What types of evidence must be authenticated? Explain why.
    • How is authentication related to relevance? Explain.
    • Thoroughly explain the process of authenticating both real evidence and demonstrative evidence.
      • How are the processes similar? How are they different? Explain.
    • Specifically, how can the following be authenticated? Explain in detail:
      • Pictorial evidence (photographs, X-rays, videos, and automatic devices)
      • Computer printouts
      • Maps, models, diagrams, charts, and summaries
    • What are the different stages in the evidence chain of custody?
      • Why is the chain of custody so important to successful prosecutions? Explain in detail.
  • Use at least 3 scholarly resources to fully support your responses.
  • Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.

Political Belief Profile

The relationship between public opinion and political participation raises many questions associated with how the public thinks, why they behave in the manner they do, and what outcomes in the form of ideological expressions will probably take place because of citizens’ behavior in the political scenario. Essentially, “who, what, and where” issues again surface in response to evaluation of political socialization.

Political socialization may be expressed in a singular way, depending on the issue of concern, but it is not derived from any single impact throughout the life of American voters and nonvoters. Qualities and conditions such as gender, race, economic status, education, and religion impact voter behaviors. Indeed, whether or not an individual votes, or takes part in any of the varied available options for participation, is closely allied with the political socialization of individuals and even entire socioeconomic groups.

The Political Compass Web site ( offers a self-test that helps you analyze your personal political views on what the test authors call a “left–right” scale. Take the test and review your results to see where you stand on the economic scale and the social scale. Discuss the results using the following questions:

  • Did your “test result” match what you thought were your political beliefs?
  • What is “politically correct” thinking? Give examples of what might be considered “politically correct” and “politically incorrect.”
  • To what degree do you think your values and beliefs represent the norms, values, and traditions of society? Define your answer using the following Likert scale—extremely common, common, moderately common, uncommon, and extremely uncommon.

In the United States, both the federal government and the states have authority to indict for criminal wrongdoing

In the United States, both the federal government and the states have authority to indict for criminal wrongdoing. The federal government and each state have their own criminal statutes, court system, prosecutors, and police agencies. Use your textbook, the Internet, and / or Strayer Library to research articles on crime trial, prosecutor, and criminal investigator.

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Put yourself in the role of a prosecutor and explain the importance of the final report to the prosecution of a case. Further, analyze the possible impact of poorly completed final reports on the prosecution of a case.
  2. Review Figure 21.1 “The Use of Evidence in the Stages of the Criminal Justice Process” in Chapter 21 of the text and specify the manner in which each stage of the criminal justice process helps to build a successfully litigated action. Provide a rationale to support your response.
  3. Define a criminal investigator’s role in preparing a case for court. Analyze the manner in which the investigator cooperates with the prosecutor to enhance the courtroom presentation.
  4. Differentiate not guilty and acquitted. Give your opinion as to whether or not an acquittal means that the investigator failed. Support your position.
  5. Predict one to two (1-2) changes that will take place in criminal investigation in the next  twenty (20) years. Provide a rationale to support your response.
  6. Use at least two (2) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar type Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

• Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Recommend improvements to the criminal investigation process in selected areas.
  • Predict changes that will take place in criminal investigation in the next 20 years.
  • Evaluate the role of the criminal investigator in preparing evidence for presentation and courtroom testimony.
  • Use technology and information resources to conduct research in the criminal investigation process.
  • Write clearly and concisely about the criminal investigation process using proper writing mechanics.

Integration of Technology

Over the years, technology has not only changed the way individuals utilize it but also how organizations utilize it. As each generation of technology improves and changes, the availability of technology in the field of business analytics also changes. Therefore, businesses need to do all they can to keep current with these trends and ensure their staff is current as well.

Using the Argosy University online library resources and the Internet, research the latest technology that is being utilized in the field of business analytics for data-driven decision making. Select at least 2 scholarly sources for use in this assignment.

Complete the following:

  • Find and describe at least three technological components that are required for data-driven decision making. Be sure to explain how each component is relevant to business analytics.
  • Describe how a company would implement each of these components of technology. Explain the purpose and how it would be utilized within the company. Explain any other considerations that should be taken into account.

Utilize at least 2 scholarly sources in support of your assertions.

Make sure you write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in appropriate and accurate representation and attribution of sources; display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Art history essay

First, find a current (made between 2000 and the current year) designed environment (store? restaurant? mall? part of an airport?) or designed object. It must be an object or environment with which you have had direct and recent physical encounter, not something you’ve merely seen in a photograph or visited a long time ago.

Next, without doing any external research on your object or space, and relying only on what you have learned in the course so far along with your skills of visual observation, write an essay in which you make an argument that your object or environment embodies (or appears to be under the influence of) specific precedents in design. These can be design styles, design concepts, and philosophies of design. As you do so, show your understanding of the course material. (This is, after all, a test of how well you understand the course material—like a final exam. Plan accordingly.)

You can draw upon the lectures and readings from the entire run of the course. As you make reference to design styles, concepts, and philosophies, be sure to give them historical context: showing that you understand when the styles or concepts emerged and what aesthetic characteristics and principles of design they advanced.

If you select stylistic precedents that philosophically contradict each other or arose in response to circumstances that were very different from the object or environment you chose, you should acknowledge this and explain how they do, or you will not receive credit for both (only one).

A balance of quantity and quality is desirable. If you make fewer references to course material, your discussion of course content should be more in-depth than if you were to make a greater number of references. For the mid-term and the final essay, no one should discuss fewer than three. Doing so will not earn even a C-, the lowest passing grade for Art Department majors.

routine or transactional change

Within the Discussion Board area, write 250–300 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

  • Identify and discuss 3 examples of routine or transactional change during your work experience.
  • Identify and discuss at least 2 examples of transformational change during your work experience.
  • Compare and contrast the 2 types of change in terms of the following:
    • Importance to the firm
    • Risk
    • Opportunity
    • How many people were impacted

Erythropoietin (EPO) Blood Doping Assignment

Lance Armstrong
In January 2013, Lance Armstrong confessed to using performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) while competing and winning the Tour de France cycling competition over seven years. He has been stripped of his titles and banned from the sport for life.

One of the drugs he has confessed to using is Erythropoietin (EPO), a natural occuring hormone used by the medical community to treat a number of health conditions.

Your task is to thoroughly research EPO and its use as a performance enhancing drug by athletes and write an opinion paper based on your findings.

Things to consider when researching and writing your paper:

What EPO is, how it works in the body and how the body rids itself of this hormone.
How does the use of EPO use enhance an athlete’s performance?
What are the possible risks (if any) associated with EPO use?
What is the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) stance on the use of EPO?
In your opinion, what are some of the negative social and economic impacts associated with the use of PEDs by professional athletes?
Why would athletes risk the type of negative consequences experienced by Lance Armstrong? In your opinion is it worth it?

HR and Privacy Law

International HR is concerned not only with cultural differences between groups but also on the additional challenge of simultaneously working within different legal systems. This often means that all employees are not treated equally. HR is responsible for establishing and maintaining the delicate balance required to adhere to local laws while treating all employees fairly.

Review the international privacy laws for three different countries. You may begin your research at the following Web site:

Based on this resource and your research, respond to the following:

  • What impact do international privacy laws have on human resource management, specifically in regards to the interviewing and hiring process?
  • What are the important features of the laws in the three countries you chose? Are there any features that surprised you?
  • What are the restrictive aspects of the laws you reviewed? How would these impact hiring and ongoing employment in that country?
  • As technology develops, what changes in the law do you foresee becoming necessary?

Employment at Will – Garp Courier Serivce (GARP)

The solution addresses each of the questions below, along with the two at the case closing. There are two references to support the legal conclusion and recommendations of what Mr. Jones should do. Using the case study provided write a 1 page memo that analyzes the case by:

  1. stating the key elements of the applicable law ( in this case the relevant law is employment at will and its exceptions ,
  2. summarize key facts
  3. apply the facts to the elements of the and its exceptions
  4. draw a legal conclusion and explain why you support that conclusion.

Garp Courier Service Case Study

Garp Courier Service (GARP) is a successful new business in the Washington DC area. The courier business is a very competitive industry. The key to GARP’s success is their unprecedented “money back guarantee” that all deliveries are completed within 30 minutes of receiving the call. GARP is growing fast and plans to establish service in other cities, starting with Baltimore.

Each of GARP 20 employees was hired with a handshake. On their first day employees are given a distinctive blue and red spandex body suit and a detailed employee handbook covering every aspect of the business from dress code and demeanor, to hours of service, pay, profit sharing and discipline. “This manual is the GARP bible. Lose it, or tell anyone our company policies and methods and you will be both fired and sued,” warned Tony Armstrong, the owner and manager. Regarding terminations the manual said all employees are conditional employees for one year. After successfully completing one year they would be considered “permanent” employees. Permanent employees are paid $40,000 per year with health benefits and are eligible for profit sharing. It also means they could be fired only for “cause” – a phrase never fully explained. The manual also says in tiny, 8-point type, on the next to last page, and after the signature page, that the manual is for “employee information purposes only and is not an employment contract.”
Homer Jones was GARP’s most successful courier. He was the first employee hired 3 years ago. He knew he was a fortunate recipient of Tony’s business system. He had the best list of clients and he worked very hard. He had to. Homer had a family to support including a little boy with heart problems. Homer realized, unlike other courier services, GARP couriers could ride and park their bikes anywhere – streets, sidewalks, even inside buildings. All doormen cooperated with GARP couriers; in contrast to the hostility they showed other couriers. Homer showed his appreciation; each Christmas he liberally handed out turkeys to friendly doormen, police officers and other “associates” who helped him.
GARP couriers have no trouble with the police. They did not obey traffic or street signs if they slow them down. If they get a ticket, unlike other couriers who pay the fine themselves, they just give the ticket to Tony. Homer tore through the city making twice as many deliveries as other couriers. Last year he earned a six-figure salary through salary, tips, bonus and profit sharing.

Due to his savvy, drive and experience Tony wanted Homer as his manager when decided to expand the business to Baltimore. Naturally, Homer was reluctant to give up his current job to start in a new city. But Tony Armstrong was uniquely persuasive. He said, “I got things set up. Go to Baltimore for a year and see how it goes. You can always get your job back here.” It was “an offer he could not refuse”. Homer relented and said goodbye to his comfortable job and life. His wife quit her job and the kids were removed from school and relocated in Baltimore where Homer bought a new house. As manager, Homer was guaranteed an annual salary, plus commissions on all deliveries and a higher percentage of company annual profits. The company also promised to hire 12 couriers within 3 months and have 20 hired within one year. The marketing budget called for huge increases in monthly increments through the first year.

On his first day of work Tony sat down with Homer and said; “this is “Management 101″ at GARP, Homer. This is a list of police officers, government officials and doormen in the Baltimore area. Every name on the list gets $100 cash on the first day of each month.” When Homer asked why, Tony said “How you think we keep the cops from busting the couriers for the reckless riding they do? What gets those doormen to cooperate? This is just “appreciation money”. It ensures the cops, bureaucrats and other problems are taken care of. It’s why we can guarantee 30-minute deliveries, you idiot! You make these payments or we are just another courier service. Understand!?
Afraid to argue, yet not comfortable paying what he perceived as bribes, Homer tried to make the business work without them. He took the money but put it in the bank. Homer worked day and night, trying all kinds of marketing and operations strategies. He bought motorized scooters and found strategic partners. The business made money but failed to match the DC office. So Homer developed a business plan that aimed for comparable profits within a year. Proudly he took it to Tony; who said very little, but signed off on Homer’s plan.
After 3 months Tony and Homer were at odds. Tony never hired more than 3 couriers in Baltimore. When Homer asked Tony to follow through on his promises or give him his DC job back, Tony assured Homer the new hires were coming. Soon Tony withdrew marketing money and short-term credit with the Baltimore bank. Homer could not meet payroll and advertise. After 9 months it was clear the business would fail. Homer was passed over for quarterly bonuses; nor did he receive the commissions from the work being done. Soon Tony stopped marketing in Baltimore and business suffered badly. One day Homer noticed a former GARP courier working in Baltimore. A brief investigation revealed Tony had opened another courier service in Baltimore under a different name. Homer went to Tony and said he wanted his old job back in DC. Tony laughed and said, “We are one week from firing you, Homer. Why don’t you quit and save everyone the embarrassment? Homer, you just don’t have the right stuff to manage a business. You flinched on the first day. Nothing has been right since.” Upset and desperate about family expenses Homer quit. He also went to the newspaper to expose the monthly payments. Finally, Homer came to you to sue GARP. You listen to his story and draft a memo on how you would sue GARP using employment at will is the critical issue (in other words this is NOT a discrimination case.)
  • What legal theories will you pursue?

Your new software skills will not be of much use if you do not see a practical application for the skills in your workplace and personal life. Without practice, remembering how to use the tools will be difficult. In this assignment, you will discuss different ways to use presentation software outside of the class.

Consider the use of presentations in your job and personal life. Respond to the following:

  • Share two or three of the most valuable pieces of information or skills you have learned from this class. How would you use the different types of software we discussed? Are some tools better for some uses than others? Be specific and give an example or two.
  • How do you plan to integrate these new skills into your future school and work experiences?
  • Give an example of a situation where a presentation would help you communicate information to others.
  • When creating a presentation, are there any legal, ethical, or security implications for what you include?
  • Based on your module readings, explain how you could use visual tools (video, pictures, graphs, charts, etc.) to help to convey information in a presentation. How might your tone and method of presentation differ if you were communicating with a friend or family member as opposed to a co-worker or supervisor?
  • Use properly documented sources outside of this course to justify, support and expand on your response. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

Conduct a Threat Assessment on Bridges and Tunnels

A worrying trend in recently documented terrorist activity is the increase in attacks on worldwide public surface transportation infrastructure. Historical data from past terrorist attacks and recent threats to US transportation infrastructure suggests that bridges and tunnels are especially vulnerable.

Considering this potential vulnerability and the lack of blast-resistant designs of bridges and tunnels, there is a need to fortify security at the multiple bridges and two tunnels along major highways in the City of Centervale. These bridges and both tunnels in Centervale support critical emergency routes, military transportation plans, and vital economic corridors, and the loss of a key bridge could result in severe security, economic, and socioeconomic consequences. Accordingly, there is a need for the leaders of Centervale to receive guidance to ensure resilience and survivability in case of a terrorist attack on one of the bridges in the city.

What You Need To Do . . .

Using the Argosy University online library resources, conduct research on the current threat to US transportation infrastructure, paying particular attention to bridges and tunnels.

Apply that research to write a 6- to 8-page report that addresses the following:

Using research and material from the course readings, analyze the history and importance of the global transportation system. Apply this research to explain how Centervale’s bridges and tunnels are vulnerable. Develop recommendations to address the following: Evaluate the ways in which the future development of the infrastructure can reduce consequences if an attack occurs. Identify countermeasures that can be used singly or in combination to reduce attractiveness to terrorists and/or vulnerability of the bridges and tunnels. Analyze and identify the best policies and procedures to maintain quality personnel and enhance procedural security of the infrastructure. Explain how these recommendations meet or exceed government guidelines for transportation in a post-9/11 environment (i.e., Patriot Act and Homeland Security). Explain how these recommendations address domestic (American) laws and regulations related to the transportation industry. Employ proper grammar and spelling throughout your writing; apply APA standards to all research.

Network Infrastructure and Security

With the parameters set forth at the onset of the project, present the infrastructure and security policy that will support the expected development and growth of the organization. The network solution that is chosen should support the conceived information system and allow for scalability. The network infrastructure will support organizational operations; therefore, a pictorial view of workstations, servers, routers, bridges, gateways, and access points should be used. Since the company will be merging with a multinational company, virtualization and cloud technology should be taken into consideration. In addition, access paths for Internet access should be depicted. A narrative should be included to explain all the nodes of the network and the rationale for the design. Lastly, using the Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability (CIA) Triangle, define the organizational security policy.

Section 1: Infrastructure Document Write a five to ten (5-10) page infrastructure document in which you:

Identify possible network infrastructure vulnerabilities. Address network vulnerabilities with the appropriate security measures. Ensure that consideration is given to virtualization and cloud technology. Design a logical and physical topographical layout of the planned network through the use of graphical tools in Microsoft Word or Visio, or an open source alternative such as Dia. Explain the rationale for the logical and physical topographical layout of the planned network. Note: The graphically depicted solution is not included in the required page length. Illustrate the possible placement of servers, including access paths to the Internet and firewalls. Note: facility limitations, workstations, printers, routers, switches, bridges, and access points should be considered in the illustration. Create and describe a comprehensive security policy for the company that will:

Protect the company infrastructure and assets by applying the principals of CIA. Note: CIA is a widely used benchmark for evaluation of information systems security, focusing on the three (3) core goals of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information. Address ethical aspects related to employee behavior, contractors, password usage, and access to networked resources and information.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length. Include charts or diagrams created in MS Visio or Dia as an appendix of the infrastructure document. All references to these diagrams must be included in the body of the infrastructure document.
