Different Types of Sound In Film Work and How They Contribute to the Overall Sense of Meaning in a Film

As we have been discussing, the mise en scène of a film is the use of a variety of design elements to create the visual theme. Last week, we examined how different lighting styles and choices affected the final impact of a film. This week, we will consider different types of sound at work in film and assess how they contribute to the overall sense of meaning in a film.

There are many types of sound in a film. Some are diegetic (sounds that are represented as coming from within the world of the film); others are non-diegetic (sounds that come from outside the world of the film). Using specific examples from your chosen film, construct a blog post in which you:

  1. Describe each of the three basic categories of sound (dialogue, sound effects, and music).
  2. Explain how the different categories of sound are being used in your chosen film.
  3. Assess the impact of sound in establishing the theme.
    • How does the use of sound inform the mood of the scene, or the film overall?
    • Can you identify specific sounds in your film that allow you to infer a particular genre?
    • Since each category of sound may produce a range of effects, how might you characterize the effects in your film? For example, realistic and expected sound effects may have a different effect on a viewer than exaggerated or unexpected ones.
  4. Assess how the scene or sequence would play differently if you changed or removed a key category of sound.

You must use at least two outside sources, in any combination of embedded video clips, still photos, or scholarly sources. All sources should be documented in APA style, as outlined by the Ashford Writing Center. It is suggested that you approach this blog by focusing your attention on the same film you will write about in your Week Three Assignment. To submit this blog, you will be required to post a link to the specific blog entry in the discussion forum. You are encouraged to explore your classmates’ blogs, but no replies are required.

Sociology of Mental Health and Illness

Sociology of Mental Health and Illness

Reflection on Mental Health – Where art thou dear friend?

Being a member of a social system which is dominated by the medical model would lead one to adopt a rather narrow view of health in general and mental health in particular.   We are left with two alternatives; either being healthy is defined as a negative or as an ideal.  Thus if you are not sick then you must be healthy or we are left with the World Health Organization’s Definition as “Health is not only the absence of infirmity and disease but also a state of physical, mental and social well-being.”   Generally speaking, neither the negative nor the ideal are useful in understanding one’s mental health or even what one might to do “be” healthy.
In the last two sections, we have covered Laing, Fromm, and Whitaker who each try to grapple with this complex problem of situating health within a social system.  For each, the person is an existential being that is deeply embedded in a social nexus.  Loosely adopting Fromm’s view that we are ‘being born’ most of our time here, you are to reflect on moving towards increasing your mental health, lest we face, “…the tragic fate of most individuals to d(ying) before we are born.” (Fromm, 1955:26)
Your reflection needs to be in six paragraphs as set out below and you need to follow college writing guidelines.  Each paragraph is to be about one page.  Please use New Roman Times, 12 font.  The writing assignment is worth 35 points.

Paragraph:

#1 Topic:  Discuss Laing’s view of Ontological Security.

#2 Topic:  Discuss Fromm’s view of Human Needs and Being Born.

#3 Topic:  Discuss Whitaker’s community focus

#4 Context: In this paragraph, using one of the three viewpoints, discuss where the author
would see that you face a challenge/problem for your mental health.

Reflective Writing Components:  This genre seeks to get the writer to think more deeply about what he/she is doing.  Two devises are used to accomplish this: a metaphor and a discussion of what you have learned about yourself from the reflection.  To fulfill these two components, first (paragraph three) using a metaphor, discuss the problem that you overviewed in your topic paragraph in terms of a metaphor.  Second (paragraph four) discuss what you have learned about yourself from this assignment.  Do not use clichés such as ‘I need more knowledge’, ‘I need to work harder’, “I need to be more tolerant”, or “I need to be more understanding”.  You need to explore more deeply what you have learned about yourself as a person from this reflection.  Think deeply.

#5:  Metaphor:  Using a metaphor, discuss the problem that confronted you in the context
paragraph in terms of a metaphor.  First, state your problem as a
metaphor. Second discuss the metaphor and isolate its key components
and third, two of these components to an understanding of your problem.
#6:   Discuss two things you have learned about yourself from this reflection? – Think
deeply about you – as a person.

#7:  Writing requirements:  if used – attach print-outs; paragraphs are labeled, of proper
length, grammar/spelling corrected, well organized, and citations/reference
page – if needed)

Grading Rubric:  Comments are placed on the assignment.  The following is the overall appraisal for each area:

Check-plus – Strongly integrated presentation (4-5 points)

Check – Adequately covered for the assignment (2-3 points)

Check-minus – Underdeveloped or missing on the assignment (1 point).

how your evidence, the documents, proved your thesis. Remember to date your documents. Be sure to space out your documents so that you include the entire time period that this question

covers.

For of these essay topics, remember to answer the question and use specific details from the documents! Use these examples to illustrate your points regarding the issues you raise (for

Sometimes, in spite of treatment, a condition or illness will cause death. In those cases, patients can decide what they do and do not want done. They can decide whether they want aggressive treatment that might prolong life or whether they prefer to stop treatment, which could mean dying sooner but more comfortably. They may want to plan their own funeral. Advance directives can help make the patient’s wishes clear to families and health care providers.Care at the end of life focuses on making patients comfortable. They still receive medicines and treatments to control pain and other symptoms. Some patients choose to die at home. Others enter a hospital or a hospice. Either way, services are available to help patients and their families deal with issues surrounding death.
Your presentation should discuss:
1.    possible organisational responses to the need to support individuals experiencing a significant life event
2.    Reflect on own personal contributions to the support of individuals experiencing significant life events
3.    Make recommendations for improving the support available in a health and social care organisation for individuals and their social networks when affected by significant life events

1900-1920  radical social and historical changes that had a major impact on British literature

The period from 1900-1920 was marked by radical social and historical changes that had a major impact on British literature. During this period, rising nationalist movements in the colonies led to the initial dissolution of the British Empire. In addition, World War I introduced chemical and technological warfare that killed on a scale never before witnessed. With the loss of so many bright young men, British authors began to question old assumptions about everything from the beneficial role of technology in society to traditional constructs of individuality, class, and gender. Modernist writers revolted against the realism of Victorianism in experiments with form that sought to mimic the internal thought processes of individuals. Devices such as the internal monologue, use of irony, and experiments with diction contrasted with the narrative omniscient point of view of Victorian authors.

Note: This lesson does not assign the short stories “A Cup of Tea” and “The Rocking Horse Winner” due to its heavy reading load. Ambitious students should feel free to read these classic and frequently anthologized stories for their own enrichment.

2.    Read “Literary Analysis Workshop: Modernism,” pp. 1090-1091.
3.    Read the biographical sketch for T.S. Eliot, “Preludes,” “The Hollow Men,” and “The Naming of Cats,” pp. 1092-1099.
4.    Read the biographical sketch of Virginia Woolf, “The Duchess and the Jeweller,” and “from Virginia Woolf,” pp. 1114-1124.
5.    Read the biographical sketch of W.H. Auden, “Musée des Beaux Arts,” and “The Unknown Citizen,” pp. 1150-1155.
6.    Read the biographical sketch of Dylan Thomas, “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night,” and “Fern Hill,” pp. 1158-1163.

Reading Questions

Read “Modern and Contemporary Literature: Historical Context,” pp. 1077-1085.

1.    Should the post-war Labor government have tried harder to save the British Empire? Why or why not?

2.    In responding to a “new, fragmented world,” why did British writers feel the need to reject traditional forms and themes?

3.    What does the word commonwealth suggest about the relationship between former British colonies and Great Britain?

Read “Literary Analysis Workshop: Modernism,” pp. 1090-1091.

4.    Read the passage at the bottom of p. 1091 from Katherine Mansfield’s short story, “A Cup of Tea.” What is ironic about Rosemary’s thoughts and actions in this scene? What type of irony is used in this passage?

Read the biographical sketch for T.S. Eliot, “Preludes,” “The Hollow Men,” and “The Naming of Cats,” pp. 1092-1099.

5.    Eliot often uses sound devices to connect his fragmentary images. Re-examine “The Hollow Men,” noting examples of each sound device listed in the chart. Use your completed chart to describe the effect these sound devices have on the poem.

Sound device                                           Example
Rhyme
Alliteration
Consonance
Other

6.    Both “The Hollow Men” and “Preludes” are concerned with the disintegration of traditional values and beliefs in the modern world. How, according to Eliot, has this breakdown affected people and society?

7.    The imagery in a poem usually contributes to its mood. How would you describe the mood of “Preludes” and that of “The Hollow Men”? How does the mood of “The Naming of Cats” differ?

Read the biographical sketch of Virginia Woolf, “The Duchess and the Jeweller,” and “from Virginia Woolf,” pp. 1114-1124.

8.    Although Woolf wrote prose, she often chose words to create poetic effects. Reread the description of the Duchess in lines 112-121. Identify at least two examples of each in the following poetic devices from this description.

•    Simile
•    Repetition
•    Alliteration
•    Consonance

9.    Restate each of the following passages using a more conventional sentence structure. What impressions or feelings are emphasized by Woolf’s unique diction?

•    “He had a flat . . . in tapestry” (lines 1-3)
•    “And now—now . . . Earls.” (lines 98-101)
•    “And from a slit . . . bird.” (lines 133-135)
•    “And there opened . . . her chair.” (lines 183-185)

10.     In your opinion, does Woolf effectively capture the quality of a person’s inner thoughts? What are some disadvantages of Woolf’s experimental style? Support your answer with details from the story.

Read the biographical sketch of W.H. Auden, “Musée des Beaux Arts,” and “The Unknown Citizen,” pp. 1150-1155.

11.    Look again at the reproduction of Breughel’s painting Landscape with the Fall of Icarus on p. 1153. Why do you think Auden chose this particular painting as the focus of Musée des Beaux Arts”? Explain, citing details from the painting as well as the poem.

12.    Review “The Unknown Citizen,” noting Auden’s unorthodox capitalization of words such as Press, Union, and Public Opinion. Why do you think Auden capitalizes these words?

13.    Re-examine both poems, noting examples of situational irony in “Musée des Beaux Arts” and verbal irony in “The Unknown Citizen.” In each poem, what ideas does Auden’s use of irony help him convey? How might each have been less effective if Auden had more directly stated his views?

Read the biographical sketch of Dylan Thomas, “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night,” and “Fern Hill,” pp. 1158-1163.

14.    Turn again to “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night.” The intensity in this poem comes in part from words, particularly verbs, which themselves convey intensity. Rage is a good example. What other words in the poem have a similar effect? How do the connotations of the words you noted enrich the meaning of the poem?

15.    Review the characteristics of the villanelle form on p. 1159. How closely does “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” follow this form? How effective is the form in conveying ideas and emotions? Explain, citing evidence.

16.    Re-examine “Fern Hill,” identifying at least three examples of personification. Why do you think Thomas gives human attributes to animals, objects, and concepts in this poem? Describe the effect his use of this technique creates.

Main Assignment

In his poem, “Musée des Beaux Arts,” W.H. Auden was inspired by the painting The Fall of Icarus by 16th-century artist Peter Breughel (see p. 1153). This Flemish master created bustling narrative panoramas. The broad chaos and sense of anonymity in these works have resonated greatly with modern viewers. Study this detail from Breughel’s Children’s Games. Use it as inspiration to write a brief narrative poem or story.

A successful creative work will:

•    Clearly identify elements of the painting in the creative work
•    Use the inspirational subject matter in creative ways
•    Use the conventions of poetry or narrative fiction to create an original work

Contemporary Problem in International Relations Research Paper Instructions

Topic: Choose a contemporary problem in international relations and analyze it using one of the three perspectives and an appropriate level(s) of analysis. This research paper is an open one.  You are free to select any problem you wish.  However, you must choose a contemporary and unresolved problem.  To get you started, you might consider a problem from one of these general areas:

  • International trade
  • Diplomacy and conflict resolution
  • Terrorism
  • Human rights
  • The environment
  • War

When you develop your research question, think of a specific issue that falls within one of these general areas (or another area of your choice).  For example, if you want to write about diplomacy and conflict resolution, you might analyze the issue of Iran and its nuclear weapons program from the liberal, state level perspective.

Develop your thesis according to the specific problem you intend to explore and the perspective you intend to use to analyze it.  In your paper, offer concrete, specific solutions to the problem you are analyzing.  The solutions you present should also reflect the perspective and level(s) of analysis you have chosen.

Do not mix perspectives.  Choose one perspective and stick to it.  I am interested in seeing how well you can apply the perspective you have chosen to a specific situation.  You may use multiple levels of analysis, if such an approach is appropriate to the perspective you have selected.
Your research paper should be 5-7 pages long and include a bibliography.
Assume that I have knowledge of the course material, so it is not necessary to define the concepts you have learned in the class.

Be selective with regard to any historical information or general background information on the problem you are analyzing.  Do not let your paper get bogged down in providing history about the problem to the detriment of your analysis of the issue.  You can assume that I have knowledge about the historical background of the problem you are analyzing.

Dependencies between tasks

Although this product is being targeted at the home consumer, the sales department thinks there is great potential in the commercial market, and it should be pursued.

You brought this issue to the project sponsor who, in turn, brought it to executive management. Management decided that this opportunity should be investigated as part

of your project. It would like to see an opportunity assessment completed that defines the new markets, potential revenues, high-level sales and marketing strategy,

and a 5-year financial business case with initial expenses clearly defined. They have agreed to provide additional resources (people, funding, and time) to create this

new deliverable. You need to tell them how many people you will need to complete this deliverable within the next 6 weeks. You can assume that the people will be

allocated to work on this deliverable a maximum of 20 hours per week.
Create a schedule focused on the creation of this new scope item. The schedule should include the following:
•    A list of tasks that will need to be completed
•    Dependencies between tasks
•    Total estimated effort to complete each task
•    Resource assignments
•    Start and end dates
The schedule should contain between 25 and 60 tasks/subtasks. Use Microsoft Project, Excel, Word, or any other appropriate tool to document your schedule. You will

also need to define the team members you will need. For each team member you will need, create a bulleted list of skills/expertise he or she must have to complete his

or her assigned tasks.

You have just been promoted to supervisor of a large department in your company. The previous supervisor was terminated because of low morale and performance of his department

You have just been promoted to supervisor of a large department in your company. The previous supervisor was terminated because of low morale and performance of his department. You had been attending night school to earn your bachelor’s degree in management and remember, from one of your courses, how important it is to listen to your employees. Before coming in and making wholesale changes, you have spent the first several weeks on the job meeting casually with each employee about his or her views on the company, the department, and his or her own work efforts. Although you receive a lot of varying feedback, one common thread of employee concern is the very autocratic approach that the former supervisor used when dealing with his employees. You know that this is sometimes referred to as a theory X approach, and you know that a more participative management approach is called theory Y. However, you have not taken the management course that covers these topics.

Using the library and Internet resources, you are to write a 500–750-word research paper that compares theory X to theory Y in terms of management styles. Specifically, you are to include the following requirements:

  • Explain each theory.
  • Create a chart that shows the pros and cons of each management style.
  • Is one particular style best in all situations? Why, or why not? Give an example.
  • Give your opinion on the difference between theory Y management and what might be considered to be democratic decision making.
  • Why would a manager’s understanding of these two theories be important to good leadership practices?

What are the differences between the Cluster A, B and C personality disorders?

1.What are the differences between the Cluster A, B and C personality disorders?

2.Compare and contrast histrionic and narcissistic personality disorder.

3.Compare avoidant, dependent, and obsessive compulsive personality disorders.

4.Explain delirium and dementia. What are the common causes of dementia?

5.Disorders resulting from head injury have received an increase in attention. Sports related head injuries, especially in football, have been linked to significant cognitive disorders. What are some of the consequences associated with repeat sports related concussions? Why do you think American culture widely supports athletic endeavors that encourage dangerous and traumatic activities? Should there be a change in rules or guidelines regarding youth and professional sports?   Be sure to support your position.

6.     If you were to encountere an individual with a personality disorderwhat would that ‘look like’ ? What types of behvaviors or conflict may be evident?

Especially for You Jewelers is a small jewelry company in a college town. Over the last couple of years, it has experienced a tremendous increase in its business. However, its financial performance has not kept pace with its growth. The current system, which is partly manual and partly automated, doesn’t track accounts receivables sufficiently, and the company is finding it difficult to determine the reasons why the receivables are so high. The company runs frequent specials to attract customers but has no idea whether these efforts are profitable or if the benefit—if there is one—comes from associated sales. Especially for You Jewelers wants to increase repeat sales to its existing customers; thus, it needs to develop a customer database. It also wants to install a new direct sales and accounting system to help solve the outlined problems.

The new direct sales and accounting system for Especially for You Jewelers will be an important element in the growth and success of the jewelry company. The direct sales portion must track every sale, be able to link to the inventory system for cost data, and provide a daily profit and loss report. The customer database must be able to produce purchase histories to assist management in preparing special mailings and special sales to existing customers. Detailed credit balances and aged accounts for each customer would help to solve the problem with the high balance of accounts receivables. Special notice letters and credit history reports would help management reduce accounts receivable.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

  1. Suggest at least five (5) expected business benefits that Especially for You Jewelers company might derive from a new system. Provide a rationale for your suggestions.
  2. Propose at least five (5) system capabilities for the company. Provide a rationale for your proposals.
  3. Ascertain the three (3) possible scenarios in this new direct sales and accounting system.
  4. Using Microsoft Visio or an open source alternative such as Dia, develop an activity diagram for each scenario that you have identified. Note: The graphically depicted solution may not exceed one (1) page per diagram. Provide a narrative that gives an overview of your diagram.
  5. Using Microsoft Visio or an open source alternative such as Dia, complete a fully-developed use case description for each scenario identified. Note: The graphically depicted solution may not exceed one (1) page per diagram.
  6. Develop a system vision document for Especially for You Jewelers, detailing the overall vision or plan for the new direct sales and accounting system. A vision document generally contains:
    1. Introduction
    2. Business needs / requirements
    3. Product / solution overview
    4. Major features
    5. Scope and limitations
    6. Other needs
  7. Use at least three (3) quality resources outside of the suggested resources in this assignment. Note:Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

1.    Write a definition for RA.  How would the definition for a sero-negative or crystal arthropathy differ from this?

2.    What features might a patient present with that would suggest they had RA? Consider features you might look for in their medical history as well as general signs and symptoms.

3.    What features would they present with if they had a sero-negative arthropathy (you chose one)?  What features would they have if they had gout?

4.    How would you recognise RA in the foot if a patient presented?  Name a features that is commonly seen (ie. Bursitis) and state how the structure is affected (ie. Development of bursae over met heads in response to overloading associated with development of toe deformities, fatty padding atrophy and inflammation synovial lining of bursa).  Use the table below:

articular    Extra articular

Rearfoot

Midfoot

Forefoot

5.     Compare these features in a sero-negative condition such as psoriatic arthritis:

6.    Compare these features in gout (a crystal arthropathy):

7.    What X-ray features would you expect to see if you had a patient presenting with an arthropathy?  Complete the table below:

RA    Psoriatic arthritis    Gout
1st mtp joint

8.         What would be the medical management for a patient who had a recent diagnosis of RA?  Compare this with a sero-negative case and compare this with gout.

9.     What would be the podiatric management of a patient with RA?  Compare this with a sero-negative arthropathy (of your choice) and with gout.

10.     Orthoses are frequently used in the podiatric management.  What is the difference between an accommodative device and a functional device?  When would you use one type in preference to the other?  Consider your answer in terms of what the aim of the devise is and what you hope to achieve?

11.    Specifically for the foot in RA, list the features (articular and extra articular) described in the table in Q4 and describe how orthoses (accommodative and functional) might be helpful for these features of the disease.  You should think about the materials you would prescribe for the orthoses or details on the shape that would be relevant to a prescription.

12.    Part of the long term management might be for a patient to have surgery.  For example an RA patient might need forefoot surgery for HAV or toe deformities.  Consider in which situations a patient would be suitable for surgery and when no (indications and contra-indications).  Give an example of a hallux valgus procedure and a toe deformity procedure that might be undertaken.
