Montreal Protocol and its subsequent amendments

1. The Montreal Protocol and its subsequent amendments resulted in the elimination of many ozone depleting substances. A link to the Montreal Protocol can be found on the course Webliography. Identify three other “world” agreements or agencies committed to helping the world’s resources (including plants, animals, and abiotic resources, such as gold and water). Summarize (paraphrase) benefits gained in detail and include links used.

2. Since the implementation of the Montreal Protocol, developed countries have decreased the amount of ozone destroying substances they use tremendously. A link to the Montreal Protocol can be found on the course Webliography. Reduction by the United States has been 97%. View the following two animations. The first shows the ozone concentrations as they varied from July to December 2008; the second animation shows average concentrations of ozone over Antarctica during October — during the Southern Hemisphere spring when the ozone hole typically is at its maximum extent. The areas of least ozone are shown by blue and purple.

A.How did ozone concentrations vary between the Northern hemisphere and the Southern hemisphere during 2008?

B. Explain why the size of the ozone hole centered over Antarctica has increased over the past 30 years. What changes occurred since the implementation of the Montreal Protocol? What did the Australian Olympic Committee do to protect the athletes and visitors? (List at least 3 implementations at this time concerning radiation and ozone.)

3. The KYOTO Protocol (The United States is not a signatory) has established guidelines for the reduction of these six greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N20), hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs), Per fluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6).

Select three of these substances and describe their chemistry in the atmosphere over a selected country/region (your choice). Show a chemical reaction (formula) for all three; include a written summary of biotic and abiotic changes possible in that country. Include current references/links. Paraphrase or block a direct quote! Assume that your country has implemented or will implement the Kyoto Protocol.

A comparative study of the architecture of 3 or more computers.

Architecture Topic

A comparative study of the architecture of 3 or more computers. In this research paper, you are to explain the hardware and software architecture of three or more computers. The list of computers that will be studied is Toshiba, HP and Mac.

The goal of this assignment is to increase your understanding of the concepts of computer infrastructure architecture.

You will use the theoretical studies of computer hardware and software and apply them to a study of real-world systems and technologies.  After using library and Internet research, you are to write a paper discussing and explaining the hardware and software architecture of the subject system or technology.  You are encouraged to use a Web to research the computer architectures involved. The paper must be your original work, in your own words, and written for this class.  Do not simply copy/paste information from the Web or textbook.  Such submissions will not be accepted for credit.  Research projects should be original work for IFSM 310; therefore, you may not re-use of a paper written you’ve written for a different class.

The body of the paper should be no more than 12 point type, not less than 2 pages or 600 words and not more than 4 pages or 900 words, not including title page, table of contents (if any), executive summary (if any), and reference bibliography.  The paper will require a title page, 2-4 pages of content with incorporation of a minimum of 3 external resources from credible sources, and a Works Cited/Reference page.

The “General Paper and Writing Requirements” for all papers (above) must be adhered to for this assignment, except as specifically noted (e.g., table of contents is optional, page limits are 2-4 pages, etc.).

Considerations

Some things to consider as you analyze your topic, follow.  (This list is neither required nor sufficient; it is merely suggestive.  Specifics will depend on the specific topic and approach.)

  • What is the specific computer, system, technology, or architecture?
  • What was unique about this computer, architecture, or technology?
  • What was its architecture?  What components was it built out of?  How were they structured?  How did they work together?
  • What were the dynamics?  How did the system work, operate, and do what it did?
  • When was it first done?  What was/were its dates?
  • How did it compare to its contemporaries and its predecessors?  How does it compare to its successors?
  • Was it successful in terms of technology?  How so?  Explain.
  • Was it commercially successful?  How so?  Explain.
  • Computer history:
    • How did technology and architecture change through history?
    • What were the major trends?
    • How did costs, capacities, speeds, etc. change?
    • Comparative architecture:
      • Compare and contrast the architectures and technologies, head-to-head.
      • What is different between them?  What is the same?
      • How do they work?
      • Which is more successful?  Why?
      • What are the relative costs of each?

Voice of the Customer

For In the “Understanding the Voice of the Customer at LaRosa’s Pizzerias” case study on pages 227 and 228, LaRosa’s Pizzerias implemented the Voice of the Customer process to design its restaurants to address customer needs and expectations and ultimately allowed the restaurant chain to gain significant market share.

  1. Develop a customer satisfaction survey of eight questions. The questions must be relevant to the case study that the project team would use to solicit appropriate responses on the restaurant design concept from current and potential customers both inside and outside the restaurant’s current market area. Explain your rationale for each question selected.
  2. For each of these survey questions, identify two critical to quality (CTQ) performance characteristics for each survey question and discuss why they are important to customer satisfaction.
  3. Based on the customer requirements that LaRosa’s has identified and considering the design concept the company has adopted, examine the customer profile (based on age, lifestyle, etc.) the restaurant is targeting.

Republic to Empire

Choose one of the several topics below making sure NOT to choose an exact topic selected by another student, for instance, if one student chose to write about the Roman Revolution, you ought to write about the spread of Roman culture or how Roman values either were or were not followed in light of Roman history. My point is that more than one of you may write about the Roman Revolution, but make certain that your choose different reformers to discuss and different events as your evidence. If you have a question about this let me know.

Each discussion should have at least five historic examples that support your assertion about the topic (you are welcome to use the chronology that I emailed to you on this exercise). Your answer should thus be about 3-4 paragraphs long.

Your discussions should use concrete examples from the online content (cite as Unit 5 Online Content), our textbooks, and Internet sources. Each post should have well developed points. Be sure to cite sources.

Consider these questions:

1. What were 3-4 specific contributions did the Romans make to later peoples? Were these contributions specifically invented or founded by the Romans, or did they make use of the intellectual achievements of other conquered peoples, such as the Gauls? How has the value of these contributions changed over time?

2. Provide at least 3-4 specific examples of how the Romans have been considered the ultimate “borrowers” of the ancient world? For instance, how did Romans borrow from Greek, Egyptian, Persian, and Carthaginian culture in standards of education, art, architecture, engineering technology, religion, concepts of governance?

3. Roman people lived by an extremely important set of virtues. The word virtue comes from the Latin, virtus, which meant “manliness.” We can also infer that it meant toughness, courage, and stamina. The key virtues I want you to consider using specific examples from Roman history are the most important ones for them: Iustia (the sense of justice); Pietas (filial piety, family honor and ancestor worship); dignitas (one’s integrity) and gravitas (one’s combined weight in society owing to one’s accomplishments in meeting the previous virtues and one’s sense of responsibility). How did Romans live up to their virtues? It would be best here perhaps to rely on discussions of specific Romans. How has opinion changed over time as to the benefit of many Roman values?

4. Reflect on specific examples of how Roman Reformers through the era of the Roman Revolution corrupted their reform attempts–for instance did they employ violence and how did that affect the response to the reforms? How has the perspective of these reforms, whether they were good or bad, changed over time?

5. How did Augustus (Octavian, Caesar’s nephew and adopted son) change Rome through his development of what was known as the Principate–the first era of truly imperial Roman rule)?

Encephalitis in Texas

Encephalitis in Texas
Case Study:
Please Complete in APA format
On May 30, a 22-year-old man complained of right hand weakness.
On June 1, he complained of right arm numbness.
On June 2, he exhibited several episodes of staring and unresponsiveness lasting 10 to 15 seconds.
He consulted a physician in Mexico, who prescribed an unknown medication. That evening, he presented himself to a hospital emergency room in Texas complaining of right hand pain. He had been punctured by a catfish fin earlier in the week, so, based on this information, he was treated with ceftriaxone and tetanus toxoid.
…….
….
On June 3, when he returned to the emergency room complaining of spasms, he was hyperventilating and had a white blood cell (WBC) count of 11,100 per mm3. Although he was discharged after reporting some improvement, he began to have intermittent episodes of rigidity, breath holding, hallucinations, and difficulty swallowing. Eventually he refused liquids. That evening, he was admitted to the intensive-care unit of another hospital in Texas with a preliminary diagnosis of either encephalitis or tetanus. Manifestations included frequent spasms of the face, mouth, and neck; stuttering speech; hyperventilation; and a temperature of 37.8°C. His WBC count was 17,100 mm3 with granulocytosis. He was sedated and observed.
…….
….
On the morning of June 4, the patient was confused, disoriented, and areflexic (without reflexes). Although his neck was supple, muscle tonus was increased in his upper extremities. Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid indicated slightly elevated protein, slightly elevated glucose, and 1 WBC per 0.1 ml. An electroencephalogram showed abnormal activity. Because he had uncontrolled oral secretions, he was intubated. His temperature rose to 41.7°C, and he was sweating profusely.
On June 5, the man died.
The patient had worked as a phlebotomist for a blood bank and had donated blood on May 22. His platelets had been transfused before he became ill, but the remainder of his blood products were destroyed.
* Case Studies are intended for use as class assignments. If you are a student, you may email your answers to your instructor using the form below. Answers to case studies are available to instructors in the Instructor’s Manual accompanying Microbiology: An Introduction, 9th edition.
Explain this questions while completing the case study
1) What was the purpose of the ceftriaxone? The tetanus toxoid?
2) What is the most likely cause of the man’s illness and death?
3) Explain what is granulocytosis?
4) How could he have being treated?
5) what information do you need to be sure?
6) How should the platelet recipient be treated?

what it deemed inappropriate and unprofessional comments over the e-mail system. Smyth sued…

The Pillsbury Company maintained an electronic mail communication system. The company repeatedly assured its employees that all e-mail communications on the system would remain confidential. Pillsbury further assured its employees that it would not intercept e-mail communications and use them as grounds for terminating or reprimanding employees. Smyth, a Pillsbury employee, received e-mails from his supervisor over Pillsbury’s e-mail system on his home computer. Relying on Pillsbury’s assurances, Smyth exchanged some blunt e-mails with his supervisor. One of them apparently contained a threat to “kill the back-stabbing bastards,” and another seemingly referred to a firm holiday party as the “Jim Jones Kool-aid affair.” Later, Pillsbury retrieved or intercepted these messages, and fired Smyth for what it deemed inappropriate and unprofessional comments over the e-mail system. Smyth sued Pillsbury for wrongful discharge under the public policy theory, alleging that public policy precludes an employer from firing an employee in violation of his privacy. Will Smyth win?

pricing guidelines in a monopoly market

Pricing strategy varies significantly across different market structures.  The pricing guidelines in a monopoly market are relatively straightforward.  Since the company is the only producer offering the product, it can mark-up the price as far as the customer can bear.  The pricing strategies for a producer operating in a perfect competition structure are also fairly intuitive. They are price takers, and hence price is set at the marginal cost of the product.  This is due to the fact that there are many firms offering nearly identical products.  However, there is optimal pricing for the market structures offering differentiated products with many competitors (oligopoly) or a few producers (monopolistic competition). These are much more complex and involved.  It has been stated that differentiation in products that creates differences in customer valuation is the most prevalent type of competition.  In such markets pricing strategies may include the three C’s of cost, competition, and customer.

Develop a paper detailing an analysis of market structures and relating pricing strategies that are suitable for each of these structures.  Furthermore, include a real world example of pricing strategy for a specific company by identifying its market structure.

Your paper should be between 1750 and 2500 words, in APA Format and structured as follows:

1.            Cover page with a running head
2.            Abstract
3.            Introduction to market structures
3.1.            Perfect competition
3.2.            Monopolistic Competition
3.3.            Oligopoly
3.4.            Monopoly

4.          Pricing strategies as they are specifically related to each of the above market structures.
5.            Case Study
6.            Conclusion
7.            References

Business Plan

Based on what we learned in Small Business Management, you are expected to write a business plan of any opportunity you have identified of not less than 12 pages. For the entrepreneur starting a new venture, a business plan has three basic objectives:
1.      To identify the nature and the context of the business opportunity, that is, why does such an opportunity exist?
2.      To outline the approach the entrepreneur plans to use to exploit the opportunity
3.      To recognize factors that will determine whether the venture will be successful.
The following are guidelines that  should help as you write your business plan.
Why Develop a Business Plan?
The plan serves as an entrepreneur’s road map to building a successful business. It describes the direction the company is taking, what its goals are, where it wants to be, and how it plans to get there.
The business plan serves three essential functions:
1.      The business plan provides an operational guide for action and success;
2.      The business plan attracts lenders, and;
3.      The business plan is a reflection of its creator.
A viable business plan is capable of passing three “tests” including:
1.      The reality test
2.      The competitive test
3.      The value test
A business plan can increase your chances for success and serve as a guide through uncertain and new experiences.
The Elements of a Business Plan
Every business plan is unique. There are many resources available to use as a guide. The seemingly overwhelming task of building a business plan is easily broken down into workable parts that any student or entrepreneur can undertake. Plans may include the following:
·         Executive Summary
·         Mission Statement
·         Company History
·         Business and Industry Profile
·         Objectives
·         Business Strategy
·         Description of Firm’s Product/Service
·         Marketing Strategy
·         Documenting Market Claims
·         Competitor Analysis
·         Description of the Management Team
·         Plan of Operation
·         Forecasted or Pro-Forma Financial Statements
·         The Loan or Investment Proposal
In addition, there are ten tips on preparing your business plan that can save time and help to create a more cohesive and impressive overall plan.
1.      Have a cover
2.      Check for spelling and grammar
3.      Create a visual appeal
4.      Include a table of contents
5.      Make it interesting and compelling
6.      Demonstrate its profit potential
7.      Use spreadsheets
8.      Include cash flow projections
9.      Keep it concise and “crisp”
10.  Tell the truth – always!

How does the movie “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” portray the Middle East and Its people?

How does the movie “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” portray the Middle East and Its people?

Paper instructions:
Discuss how the movie “You don’t mess with the zohan” portrays the Middle East and its people with reference to terrorism, Politics and History.

In this exercise we are seeking an insightful analysis of the ways in which the Middle East, its inhabitants and its landscapes are represented in the film and the ways in which the producers may or may not be perpetuating stereotypes (either negative or positive). You should not spend too much of your essay simply summarising the film’s plot as this does not address the question.

observe the following points when preparing their essay:
•    Essays are to be 2000 words.
•    You should use at least 10 different reference sources.
•    A consistent and thorough system of referencing is essential. Use direct quotations sparingly, and seek to outline ideas in your own words.
•    The use of other authors’ ideas or words without acknowledgement (plagiarism) is unacceptable and will result in a failure for this piece of assessment.
•    The essay must be well structured; introduce, outline, and conclude a consistent argument that directly answers the question you are investigating.
•    Each essay must include a bibliography.

How would you transform the PTP to JSP?

Packet Transmission Problem (PTP) and Job Scheduling Problems (JSP) are known NP-complete problems. It is also known that any NP-complete problem can be transformed into another NP-complete problem within polynomial time.

Question:  How would you transform the PTP to JSP?

Following are the descriptions of PTP and JSP. Packet Transmission Problem (PTP) There is a data packet that needs to be transmitted to all n sites on the network. Data packet cannot be duplicated by any sites, and each site should receive the data packet only once. The time it takes to transmit this data packet from site i to site j is T(i,j). PTP is to choose the routing so that this data packet can be transmitted to all sites with the least amount of time. Job Scheduling Problems (JSP) We have a set of n jobs with the amount of time they need to complete, t1, t2, …, tn, the deadline they need to be completed by, d1, d2, …, dn, and a penalty incurred if the job is not completed by the deadline, p1, p2, …, pn. JSP attempts to order this set of n jobs to incur the smallest penalty.

Write a 1700 to 2,000 word paper in APA format that distinguishes the types of plate margins and how they move. Also, discuss why earthquakes are common along plate margins or boundaries.

Write a 1700 to 2,000 word paper in APA format that distinguishes the types of plate margins and how they move. Also, discuss why earthquakes are common along plate margins or boundaries.
Respond to the following in your paper:

o When the Earth does quake and shake, how does it move?
o What are the events that cause the Earth to quake and shake?
o How are earthquakes measured?
o Briefly describe the two types of body waves an earthquake creates.

Provide an example, in your paper, of an area that is prone to earthquakes. If you need assistance with locating an area, review the Ring of Fire animation on the student Web site.

Review the following animations, located on the student Web site, to assist in research for your paper:

health policy document from a socio-political perspective

health policy document from a socio-political perspective

This assignment requires you to analyze a health policy document from a socio-political perspective

Your analysis should address the following key questions:

•    What is the main health area of the policy? (e.g. mental health, women’s health, etc.)

•    Who are the stakeholders in the policy? (e.g. these are the people that have a stake in dealing with the problem, e.g. nurses, children, bio-ethicists, people living in poverty, the disabled, etc.—you may identify stakeholders that are not mentioned in the policy).

•    What is the desired outcome/effect of the policy? Why is it important that the health issue be resolved or improved?

•    What perspective does the policy take in relation to the structure-agency continuum? (i.e. does the policy focus more on the structures of society (class, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, rurality) or on the actions of individuals and particular groups?)

•    What perspective does the policy take in relation to the illness/wellness continuum? (i.e. does it focus more on the treatment of the illness/problem or on the creation of wellness through prevention and early intervention?)

•    What do you think the priority areas should be to effectively respond to the health issue/problem described in the policy? Do you think the policy acknowledges and includes these priority areas? Please provide evidence for your answer.

•    How does the policy promote participatory care within the normal social contexts of individuals and communities?

rhetorical devices and fallacies

Paper instructions:
Choose an advertisement that contains at least three or four rhetorical devices or fallacies (but more would be better!), from a newspaper or a magazine (in which case you should scan the ad, save it as a PDF, and submit it with your assignment) or an online source (in which case you should include the EXACT URL with your assignment, pasted as a link with the assignment). You CANNOT use video ads for this assignment if you plan to complete the extra credit opportunity associated with this assignment (explained below). So, if you plan to do the extra credit, you must choose an ad that is an image, not a video. The advertisement must be from 1990 or later (no ads produced before 1990).

Analyze the ad for uses of rhetorical devices or fallacies. Explain which devices you see in the ad, making sure to be specific in your analysis. You must clearly identify the specific parts of the advertisement that you find rhetorical or fallacious.

…….

In addition to identifying any rhetorical devices and fallacies, analyze the ad in terms of the following:

Who is targeted in the ad (who is the target audience?)?

What psychological effect does the ad have on the audience?

What subconscious needs or desires among the audience does the ad seem to be playing upon?

The written analysis should be at least 1000 words (to earn minimum credit for this assignment). Of course, paste your analysis into the “Submission” portion of this assignment page.

Then, create a new ad (actually make the new ad) for the product advertized in the original ad. Your new ad should be targeted toward a critical thinker. Therefore, your new ad should not use any rhetorical devices or fallacies to persuade the audience. Instead, your new ad should present a well-reasoned, well-supported argument for why a critical thinker should buy the product. You will probably have to do research to create the argument. You may also need to change the visual images or pictures from the original add (feel free to use pictures from whatever source you like….just be sure that the images you choose do not have any manipulative rhetorical effect on the audience.). The goal of the new ad should be to present an argument, not to persuade! Scan your new ad, save it as a PDF and send it as an attachment, or create your new ad on your computer, save it as a PDF, and attach it to your assignment. You can earn anywhere up to 25 points, depending on the quality of the argument in the new ad, and the quality of the ad itself.

discuss the legal and ethical basis for Advance Directives such as the Living Will and Durable Power of Attorney for healthcare.

Advance Directives—research and discuss the legal and ethical basis for Advance Directives such as the Living Will and Durable Power of Attorney for healthcare. Why are these documents so valuable in healthcare situations? What legal authority do these documents provide for decision making by family and/or healthcare providers? Briefly discuss a situation in which a Living Will might apply and would be of benefit to those involved. Once you have researched and discussed Advance Directives, draft a sample Living Will, indicating the type of content that should be found in such a document. Some students take this opportunity to prepare their own actual Living Will, and that certainly is encouraged.
