  1. Assuming the markets cannot be separated (and thus the same price must be charged to both regions), what is the marginal revenue for the quantities that you can determine?  What price should be charged to maximize profit?
  2. If the markets can be separated, determine the marginal revenues in each market. If the firm must set a single price for the drug in each market (the prices can vary between markets), what price should be charged in the foreign market? In the domestic market?  What happens to the company’s profit?

Scenario 2 (length: as needed)

Apple (relatively) recently introduced different “versions” of the iPhone and iPad—in particular, currently Apple sells four versions of the iPad (iPad Air, iPad with Retina display, iPad mini with Retina display, and the iPad mini–http://www.apple.com/ipad/compare/). Note that the “top of the line” iPad and iPad mini are available with hard drives that range from 16GB to 128GB, and with the A7 chip. The other versions of the iPad and iPad mini are only available with a 16GB hard drive and feature slower chips (A6X and A5), but at a lower price than the top of the line models.

  1. Briefly explain why continuing to sell the older models when the newer generation’s models are introduced is an example of price discrimination. How does this help Apple reach a larger market?
  2. Why are the lower tier models are currently only available with the 16GB hard drive, when previously (when they were the top of the line models) they were available with larger hard drives?
  3. When the iPad mini was first introduced, industry experts estimated that for every 4 million iPad minis that were sold, sales of the full-sized iPad would decrease by 1 million units. Assuming that is the case, explain why introducing the iPad mini was a good idea, even with some level of cannibalization.

Within organizations, the human resources department is considered an ally by some managers and a barrier by others. The legal requirements of managing HR require you to be the dispenser of policies, procedures, and rules at times and a trusted counselor and guide at other times. There are varying perspectives on the value HR policies bring to an organization.

…….

In other words, the policies, procedures, or rules may be viewed as tools that help or hinder leaders from managing their people and will either detract from or enhance company performance. When not properly aligned with the company’s goals, they can negatively affect the success of the organization.

…….

You know that you need to review the current HR policies, procedures, and rules and anticipate that you may be recommending changes, additions, or deletions. Because you are still new and solidifying your position within the company, you are concerned that missteps now will cost you your “place at the table.”

You decide to consult with your mentor—an experienced, powerful HR executive at another company. She presents the following for you to consider:

Employment Law – Hiring , Firing , Discrimination – Marwan Case Study

Directions:

Research employment law related to hiring/firing and discrimination, using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Based on the facts of the case and research, write an analytical paper. In the paper, respond to the following questions:

  • What civil rights laws may prohibit Marwan’s conduct with his fellow co-worker? Do those laws apply to his conduct toward the park guest?  Explain both answers.
  • Did Marwan commit sexual harassment? If so, what type? Explain your answers and the terms you use.
  • What is the legal nature of Marwan ‘s employment?  Explain your answers and the terms you use.
  • What actions and steps should Studio Five take against Marwan? Explain what actions you considered and why you either recommend them or reject them.
  • Discuss Marwan’s allegation that he is being discriminated against based on his disability and what response Studio Five may have to that allegation. What would each of them have to prove in court?
  • If the female employee sues Studio Five Theme Park, what defenses can Studio Five use?  Are they liable for Marwan’s conduct even if they were unaware of and did not approve of Marwan’s actions? Explain your answers and the terms you use.
  • If Marwan was a member of a union that had a collective bargaining agreement with Studio Five, would that change any of your previous answers?
  • What types of company policies, procedures, and actions should businesses employ to avoid harassment of their employees?

Write a ten-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards for writing style to your work.

Marwan has worked at Studio Five Theme Park as a character actor portraying a swash-buckling pirate. He does not have an employment contract.  He loves his job because of his seniority with the company and all the attention he receives from the guests in the park. Unknown to anyone, his prosthetic leg has no noticeable impact on Marwan’s success in this position.

Marwan has become an accomplished flirt with all this attention, and now goes to the extent of placing his hands on the female guests’ behinds when posing for pictures. The women he has encountered so far have not complained, didn’t seem to mind, or they were taken by such surprise they were not sure how to respond.

One day, Marwan grabbed the breast of one of his fellow female actors who had been recently hired. When she threatened to report him, Marwan told her that he could get her fired if she did not go on a date with him. The fellow employee reported the incident anyway and Marwan was terminated immediately. Marwan contends that he was terminated as a result of physical disability.

Substance abuse treatment options and approaches for pregnant women

Research Paper Instructions
This paper will be completed in three steps, each of which will be assigned points toward your final grade. These steps are:
1)      Submission of a topic, outline and list of references for your paper (10 points, due Week 5)
2)      Selection of topic and development of an Annotated Bibliography (10 points, due Week 6)
3)      Submission of an 8 – 10 page paper (20 points, due Week 8)
Selection of Topic, Outline and References – (Due Module 5)
1)      Select a topic that is related to the scope of this course.  The topic should be one that has personal and professional interest to you. It should have some relevance to substance abuse counseling and families. Choose a fairly specific topic; topics that are very broad generally do not result in good papers.  For example, instead of choosing the topic “Women and Substance Abuse”, which is too general, you might narrow your focus to “Special Treatment Needs of Chemically Dependent Women” or to “Effective Treatment Models for Pregnant Substance-abusing Women”.
…….
2)      Conduct searches of online journal articles, web sites, and other internet information sources to find 10 to 15 current sources of information about your topic. In addition to using a search engine such as Google, you must also use library databases such as EBSCOHost to find current professional journal articles. These should be references that contain information relevant to your topic which you will cite in your final paper.
3)      You may only use online sources if you can access and read the entire article. If you can only access an abstract of a journal article, you may not use it – even if the abstract is very interesting and relevant to your topic. Some full journal articles may be available through the GCU interlibrary loan process, which will allow the university to email you a copy of full journal articles that you cannot access directly through EBSCOHost.
4)      In the course of locating journal articles and other references, you will begin to refine your topic.  This frequently means narrowing your topic and/or adjusting the scope of the topic to reflect the kinds of information and current themes that you have located in the professional literature.  Based on this refinement:
a)      Develop a title for your paper that reflects its scope and contents.
b)      Develop an outline for your paper that includes, at a minimum, the following headings:
i)        Abstract
ii)      Overview or Introduction
iii)    Major topics and subtopics
iv)    Summary or Conclusion
v)      References
c)      You do not need to include content for outline sections 1, 2, 4, or 5 above. However, Section 3 (major topics and subtopics) must be clearly identified in outline form.  Your total outline should be approximately 1 page long (double-spaced).
d)     Create a list of 10 – 15 tentative references that you plan to cite in your paper.  Your reference list must be in correct APA format. As you develop your paper, you may discover that you need to replace some of these references with stronger ones. Your final reference list should include only those references that you actually cite in your paper.
Annotated bibliography – (Due Module 6)
An annotated bibliography is a bibliography of professional literature sources that incorporates your own critical assessment of each source.  For this course you are required to write a paper and an annotated bibliography of resources about a topic related to family issues and substance abuse.  Each student may choose a topic of personal interest for his/her paper; however, if you have any question about whether your topic is course-related, please consult with your instructor before proceeding.
1)      Select 5 or 6 of the best sources to arrive at a set of resources that are current, empirically based, and whose contents you believe to be of high quality based on the author/s’ credentials, the research design, publication in peer-reviewed journals, commentary by other professionals, etc.  The articles must be related to your research paper topic and should represent sources of information that you would use as references if you were writing a paper on your topic.
…….
2)      Write an annotated bibliography using your top 6 to 8 references.  Identify your topic at the top of the page. Each bibliography item should include a brief descriptive summary of the contents of the source material, followed by your assessment of the strengths, weaknesses, and significance of the information for your topic.  Each entry should be approximately one-third to one-half page in length, single-spaced.  Each entry must begin with an APA style bibliographic reference for the article/source, followed by your narrative assessment.
3)      Submit your Annotated Bibliography to your instructor by the end of Week 6.
4)      Your Annotated Bibliography will be assessed based on the quality of the resources selected and the quality of your assessment of each resource as it relates to your selected topic.
Final paper – (Due Week 8)
Your final paper will be eight to ten pages long (double-spaced, excluding reference section).  It will include the following sections:
1)      Abstract: a brief summary (approximately 250 words) of the contents of the paper
2)      Overview/introduction that describes the importance of the topic you have selected (both its personal/professional significance to you and its significance for our current professional understanding of families and addictive disorders) and the scope of the paper (topics to be addressed).
3)      Major topics and subtopics, including appropriate headings that correspond to your outline and that help the reader to follow the development of your selected topic. Your paper must demonstrate your understanding of the material studied in this course and the professional references you have selected. You must use correct APA style for in-text citations.  Every in-text citation must have a corresponding reference in the References section of your paper.
4)      Summary/conclusion that restates the scope/purpose of the paper, summarizes the key points resulting from your research, and raises questions that are of interest to you or that are not yet answered in the professional literature.
5)      Final References – 10 to 15 references, compiled in correct APA format. Every reference must have at least one corresponding in-text citation, and every in-text citation must be included in your list of references.

Google Search Results Review – Nutrition: Getting Rid Of Obesity

Search: getting rid of obesity.

website: http://slism.com/diet/prevent-obesity-top10.html

Obesity is substantially associated with the food taken by some of the populations throughout the world, especially first foods. It is a problem affecting many urban centers since most of the people use fast foods, which are plenteous in fat and have little or no nutritional values. Various websites propose different solutions to obesity.

Various websites talk of how obesity can be treated. Slism.com talks of the treatment of obesity and how it is caused though it does not point out explicitly the various ways to deal with obesity since it uses languages that are sometimes indecipherable. Various English words are confused for example instead of used food it uses well. Therefore, one may be confused as a result. The website provides valuable information on the various misconceptions like eating less food to reduce obesity. Refraining from eating fatty meals as the website says is not a solution since people may get more calories from other foods. The website provides valuable information but does not provide the required linguistic understanding.

The website has a copyright of 2013 and still operates without having renewed its copyright. The websites have the domain of .in, which may be questionable since people who are not proficient in providing information concerning nutrition may have formed it. The website does not have references, which help people to know if what they are showing is credible, or not. Therefore, the sources and credibility of the information is questionable.

Website: http://www.myhealthtips.in/2013/09/home-remedies-to-treat-obesity-naturally.html

Author: Sharib

The website dwells on the treating obesity using home remedies.

The site proposes various treatments for obesity. One of them is green tea. Using quality green tea leaves to reduce obesity has been proven to reduce obesity significantly. It proposes the taking of green tea three times a day.

The second option of dealing with obesity as Sharib suggests is apple cider, vinegar and lime juice. The website encourages exercise in dealing with obesity. It gives reliable and realistic ways of dealing with obesity and therefore it can be proved a valid site. The presentation of the information by the website is relevant and provides invaluable information on how obesity can be treated using natural means.

The website, as a result, provides relevant information on obesity as the topic states and the sites name health tips is relevant to the topics. The website is copyrighted, and this adds to its credibility. As such, the site provides information for authorization.

Author: Unknown

Topic: 10 ways to get rid of obesity

The article is in the form of slides, which focus on the prevalence of obesity in India. The article has various references to support what it puts across. Therefore, there is credibility in the information posted on the website. The website has a copyright of 2015 and therefore it is current and up to date with its information. The website also has the .com domain name, which is a valid domain name.

The website provides information on obesity mainly focusing on the effect it has on the economic and social standing of a nation. It concentrates on causes of obesity and looks at very low-calorie diet, using foods that are low in fat and carbohydrates. The article critically analyses the various solutions that obese people need to follow to help in treating their condition. The website provides relevant information since it provides news on business, movies, and health among many others. Therefore, a site offers information on various topics with health included.

That people have different reactions to obesity and even to its treatment. The articles look into the various steps that people can follow to contain obesity. It suggests different treatments that include shakes that have either chocolate, vanilla, strawberry. The website does not give references to prove that the shakes or solutions proposed by the articles have been shown. It suggests the eating of snacks between meals and balanced diets during dinner without stating whether the lunch and breakfast should have a balanced diet. The references are given near the bottom of the website and are Slim-Fast.com and the diet channel. The information does not have academically researched information that backs up the various steps that deal with obesity.

The websites credibility is not in question since it has an updated copyright of 2015. It has the domain of .com, which is a commercial domain and further shows its credibility.

There are many perspectives when looking at nutrition. The academic world has come up with various measures and ways of dealing with nutrition and the nutritional disorders. Some of them embrace traditional forms of eating while others look onto modern forms of treating the various disorders. Culture has changed the way people deal with nutrition. In the modern context, people are wont to consume unhealthy foods than in the traditional setting. As a result, the culture of a place determines the nutrition. Nutrition is an important area that should be greatly researched to input important information that will help people to avoid various eating disorders.

GOVERNMENT FORMATION

Suddenly, a storm hits and the entire ship is irreparably damaged and all of the passengers and crew are stranded on a deserted island.

Fortunately, there is enough food, water and shelter for the shipwrecked passengers.  No one was injured or killed.

However, after thoroughly assessing the situation there is little hope of rescue.

After a while, a group has been selected to form “some sort of government” while stranded on the island.  You have been asked to join this group.

  • Write a 2-3 page, APA style paper,  attempting to persuade the group what form of government you would choose and why.  Include any opposing position along with your rebuttal of that opposing position. Use at least three sources to support your position.
  • For instance you may write a paper explaining that the type of government selected is a democracy (and why) and the opposition would be those that disapprove of democracies (and why).
  • Include a title page and 3-5 references.  Only one of your references may be found online (not Wikipedia).  The other references must be found in the Grantham University online library.  Please see the rubric below.

MGMT-520- Lgl, Poli, Ethcl Dimns of Busn:- Week 2 – Assignments:Administrative Law Assignment

Assignment:

Pick an administrative agency of either the federal or a state government. Find where the current and proposed regulation changes for that agency are located on the Internet. (i.e., the Federal Register or the State Administrative Agency website.) Regulations.gov is a good place to begin your research. Pick one proposed regulation change currently under consideration (if you find one that has already closed out but interests you, you can use that instead) and write the following regarding it:

1. State the administrative agency which controls the regulation. Explain why this agency and your proposed regulation interest you (briefly). Will this proposed regulation affect you or the business in which you are working? If so, how? Submit a copy of the proposed regulation along with your responses to these five questions. The proposed regulation can be submitted as either a separate Word document (.doc) or Adobe file (.pdf). This means you will submit two attachments to the Week 2 Dropbox: (a) a Word document with the questions and your answers and (b) a copy of the proposed regulation you used for this assignment. (10 points)

2. Describe the proposal/change. (10 points)

3. Write the public comment that you would submit to this proposal. If the proposed regulation deadline has already passed, write the comment you would have submitted. Explain briefly what you wish to accomplish with your comment. (10 points)

4. Provide the “deadline” by which the public comment must be made. (If the date has already passed, please provide when the deadline was). (5 points)

5. Once you have submitted your comment, what will you be legally entitled to do later in the promulgation process (if you should choose to do so)? (See the textbook’s discussion of the Administrative Procedure Act.)

If the proposal passes, identify and explain the five legal theories you could use in an attempt to have (any) administrative regulation declared invalid and overturned in court.

Which of these challenges would be the best way to challenge the regulation you selected for this assignment if you wanted to have the regulation overturned and why?

Answer all of these questions for #5 even if you are in favor of your proposed regulation.

The response to question 5 should be a minimum of 2 3 paragraphs long. (15 points)

Philosophy on Reasoning and Faith

Revised Paper Proposal #2
Philosophy 101-13
Adam Walker
Every person has their own types of faith and beliefs along with their own levels of knowledge. Many philosophers have argued over if these two topics can correlate with each other or not. Pascal and Montaigne both have stated that someone’s faith can be correlated to one’s reasoning and knowledge. Hume and Kierkegaard on the other side have stated that they are two separate ideas that cannot be correlated to each other. Does reasoning lead to faith or the other way around? Can the knowledge of someone differ so much from their faith of what they don’t understand or not know? These are questions that these philosophers have tried to answer and I believe that Pascal and Montaigne have made an argument I agree with. Hume and Kierkegaard both have great reasoning and it makes sense to have the two topics separate from each other but I also argue that without one the other would not be possible to have. We use reasoning to understand the world around us and we do our best to gain as much knowledge as we can but anything that we cannot explain or is out of our area of knowledge we leave it to faith to fill in gaps. The history of mankind has shown this time and time again in a lot ways where we gain a lot of knowledge but we always get stuck somewhere so we resolve to faith to explain the rest. Maybe it’s the other way around and all of our faith and beliefs lead us to explore and find more information. Most of us have faith in knowing there’s more information out there that we have not found out yet so there is a small correlation with knowledge and faith. It could also be a mixture of the two, having faith leads to us finding knowledge and having knowledge leads us to believe in certain faiths of which other people can relate to.

…….
….

Outline for Paper:
• Claim: I agree with Montaigne and Pascal in believing that reasoning and faith are correlated together. Faith results from having a certain amount of knowledge and knowledge results from faith leading to explanations.
o Montaigne and Pascal both agree with reasoning and faith being correlated and Hume and Kierkegaard do not agree with them being correlated
o The idea of faith and reasoning being able to coexist and interact with each other as 1 rather than them being separate. Knowledge with faith or knowledge vs. faith
• Reasons/supports: when reasoning falls short faith fills in to solve the rest of the gaps that we can’t fill in. Same thing goes with faith, once you reach a certain point in having faith you begin to gain knowledge and your faith is the cause of that.

Scenario – Diversity in American Life

Kevin is a hardworking salesperson at a local department store in a small town. He is a great salesperson and takes pride in his work. He is single and is new to the area.

When Kevin first started, he was introduced to everyone by Sally, his trainer. They went to the break room, and Sally said to enjoy the remainder of his break and left. Shortly after she left, one of the employees introduced himself to Kevin and made a lewd remark about Sally. The other male employees sitting in the break room laughed and made similar comments under their breath. Kevin remained silent and changed the subject.

Kevin’s friend Ned who he met playing volleyball works in a business that is close to Kevin’s store, so they go out to lunch on a regular basis. One day, Ned picked up Kevin to go to lunch and his coworkers saw them. Another time, when they were on their way to a game after work, one of his coworkers ran into them. Since then, whenever Kevin enters the break room, the other male employees give him the silent treatment. It seems that whenever he leaves the break room, the other male employees erupt into laughter. At other times when he approaches his coworkers, they abruptly stop talking and glance secretively at one another. It becomes clear to Kevin that some of his fellow employees seem not to like him, but he is not sure why.

Because of his strong work ethic and customer service skills, Kevin is promoted to assistant manager. This creates tension among the other employees who have worked there for a longer period of time. During his first week as assistant manager, Kevin asks Bill and Ted to help him stock the new shipment of merchandise throughout the store. Bill and Ted reluctantly start to help him unload the truck. Kevin leaves them to finish the job and returns to the floor. He returns later to find them on an unscheduled break. Bill is on his cell phone and Ted is found smoking a cigarette out behind the store. Much of the merchandise still remains in the truck. Kevin decides that they should be written up for the infraction.

Weeks later, Kevin’s boss, Frank, calls him into the office. He explains that there have been some complaints from customers about Kevin. Without giving much detail, Frank explains that the company’s image is very important for sales and customer satisfaction. He goes on to explain that family values are very important to the image of the store and the community. He continues to say that Kevin’s sales are not what they used to be and that there were some errors on the invoices. He goes on to say that it is unfortunate, but it is just not going to work out. He finishes by stating that the company has a policy that an employee may be let go for any reason and he is terminated.

Kevin protests and asks Frank to explain why he is being fired but Frank says that his decision is final and that the matter is closed.

1. Explain what happens to price and quantity of milk when the following events occur:
a. More people start drinking soy milk.
b. There is a mad cow disease epidemic.
c. The price of milk increases.
d. The government decides to implement a price ceiling on milk.
For each event, you must specify how it effects either demand, quantity demanded, supply, or quantity demanded. It is also important to demonstrate how the change will affect the market demand or supply curve. Also, be sure to state any assumption you are making regarding the relationship of the event and milk.
e.g. There is a sale on cookies.
Assume that cookies are a complement to milk. If cookies are cheaper, then the consumer will increase quantity demanded of cookies. If consumers buy more cookies, then there will be a need for more milk to go with the cookies so the demand for milk will increase. This event causes a shift of the demand curve to the right. The shift will cause price and quantity of milk to increase.
2. What are some of the determinants of the price elasticity of demand?
3. Read section 1 and 2 of Chapter 5. What type of elasticity (elastic, inelastic, zero, etc.) do you think milk has based on your answer above. Explain.
4. Based on your answer above, what happens to total revenue when the price of milk is increased. Why?
Recall from the powerpoint presentation:
Inelastic goods (goods in which consumers are less responsive to changes in price): e < 1
Elastic goods (goods in which consumers are more responsive to changes in price): e >1

foreseeability

. First, explain the concept of “foreseeability” (the first rule of a criminal act). Secondly, the second rule that applies to situations in which the accused takes the victim as he finds him or her; for example, if Keesha strikes Raul without the intent to kill but (unknown to Keesha) Raul is a hemophiliac and bleeds to death because of the injury inflicted by her, Keesha can be liable for the death. Give your explanations of the law in these situations.

2. Write a short essay on the concept of “non-consummation.” Include intent and give a treatment on the statutes in some jurisdictions that may or may not elect to charge the offender.

3. Write up the full definitions of the following four elemental concepts of negligence and provide your opinion in general on each of the elements of negligence. These definitions should be written in your own words. No points will be awarded if your definition is verbatim that which appears in the textbook. a. Standard or Care, b. Breach of Standard, c. Proximate Cause, and d. Harm or Injury Produced

4. Sam was an Olympic medalist in swimming. He secured a job as a lifeguard at Euclid Beach Park. Things were not too exciting, so Sam decided to have a few drinks while he was on duty. Sam was feeling no pain when he heard a cry for help. He saw a person in great difficulty about 100 yards offshore. Sam stumbled and finally reached the water. He was unable to get to the victim before she drowned. Under what theory, if any, would Sam be liable for the death of the drowning victim? Explain your reasons.

5. Assume that Officer Washington, while off duty, is just arriving home from a picnic with his family. He is carrying his off-duty revolver, as required by departmental regulations. As he approaches his home, Smith sees someone climb out a side window and run in the opposite direction. That individual is carrying a sack of some kind, and it appears to be rather cumbersome. The thought also passes through Washington’s mind that the person might be a teenager. He realizes he cannot catch the fleeing figure and knows nobody was rightfully in his home. Should Washington shoot? If he killed the fleeing figure, would he be justified in doing so? Defend your position.
