Augustine and Aquinas Views On Ethics – Compare And Contrast Essay

Ethics

The views of the philosophers Augustine and Aquinas about the human nature; these two philosophers have tremendous exploration in the moral philosophy and have great contribution about the human nature, their ability to know and exploit the good. However, their views are so contrasting with minimal similarities; evidently Augustine has a pessimistic view as compared to Aquinas who has an optimistic view of human nature.

We will begin with looking at the Augustine view on the same subject; human nature.  The Augustine’s vie of human nature is seen to have major roots from the Plat that referred to the human nature/self as just but an immaterial soul capable of thinking. According to this philosopher, the human nature is controlled largely by the acts of the first parents, Adam and Eve.

Augustine says that in the beginning the humans had equal ability to choose for evil and good this is much controversial from now that the humans are more pulled towards the evil than the good.  The satisfaction of human pleasures and the material things have gathered priorities to the humans. Humans strive to satisfy these desires regardless of whether they are doing good or evil. Augustine believe that this has been inherited from the fast parents Adam and Eve who went as far as disobeying God just to satisfy their immediate need of taste(Johnson, 1978).

All humans according to Augustine have fallen short of glory and grace according to Augustine. Humans can however avoid their grandparents’ sinful nature could they receive the unmerited favor from God; grace. According to Augustine, grace is just for the chosen few, the saintly humans those who rationally reason and repent after sin. He says that the most relevant part of the human is the inner person; not the intellect but the persons will. He has mentioned the role of the social institutions in shaping the human nature.

On the other hand, Aquinas also had some concerns and philosophy on the human nature that was very contradictory to that of Augustine. Aquinas suggests that the human nature has a composition of the human body and soul it is borrowed much from the Aristotelian philosophy. He talks about the unity that exists between the body and soul. He suggests that the human brain has undergone sufficient development by what he describes as the round mid-gestation and therefore supports intellect operations unlike in the case of the Augustine. The soul is indeed a subsistence form; it is a form of the body which he described as being immaterial, incorruptible and most so subsistent. He dwelt much more at comparing the souls of the human and non-human animals. The basic difference is that the humans have an intellect soul as opposed to animals. The soul therefore posses a material explanation of actions and so does it have an explanation for the behaviors of human nature(Abel, 1992).

These two philosophers also have different accounts about the ability of the humans to know the good. Aquinas suggests that the human’s ability to know the good is mostly governed by the human’s intellect. He claims that everybody has the ability for knowledge. He believes that humans have natural desires for knowledge. He goes ahead giving five justifications that science can explain the existence of God. In summary Aquinas unlike Augustine, took a scientific account to human knowledge(Johnson, 1978).

Augustine on the other hand had a belief about the human’s deplorable natural desire for the knowledge. He explains man’s defect of always wanting to know as the origin of corruption observed in man. He highlights curiosity, lusts of the eyes and the nefarious chains of necessity to be the driving forces behind man’s ability to know. In summary man’s ability to know have its roots from the first parents Adam and Eve. Augustine believes that the true knowledge originates from God and only the few seeks it. Humans are only controlled by their dying satisfaction of their immediate earthly desires.

Augustine view of the ability of humans to do what is good has direct origin from the first parents; Adam and Eve who were inclined by their own selfish desires and perception of what is good and evil. Controlled by their own counsel against that of God about the good and evil, they chose to do the evil believing that that very evil was the good. Augustine therefore believes that man is controlled by the satisfaction of materials and selfish desires. This affects their ability to do the good; they are all pulled towards the evil. On the other hand Aquinas on the other hand does not believe that the sins of the parents can be transmitted to the descendants. According to Aquinas, ability of the humans to do good is govern by the effect of good laws. Reasoning as an intrinsic principle governs the human’s ability to do well.

Critiques to the philosophers are as follows; in Augustine philosophy on human nature, he describes everything mage by God to be perfectly good. If that is so then how could the human beings who are the fundamental creatures from God inherit evil? Augustine claims that the human inherit the evil from the first parents. This is contradicting his opening statement that tall the creation of god is perfectly good. Aquinas philosophy on the other hand has critiques. He explains that we can explain God’s existence by empirical knowledge. The fact is God is trans-human. He is above the human understanding; by just empirical perspective we may not understand his existence.  Among the two philosophers I tend to agree more with Aquinas than Augustine. Human intellect and ability to reason has a major contribution to his morals. The knowledge of the truth and ability to do good all have their roots in the power of intellect and the ability to reason as postulated by Aquinas.

Impacts Of Second World War On Canada

After the Second World War, the world and Canada to be specific underwent massive socio-economic transformations with a huge paradigm shift in its economic systems. The rise in new cities in Canada led to the numerous employment opportunities and rural-urban migration. The sustainability framework works to ensure that every business or organization is committed to sustainability of their development and incorporates it into their approach for risk management. There are four sustainability based framework. These are discussed below.

This is not a formal name for this type of sustainability framework but it suggests that sustainability is comprised of ecological, social and economic systems. These three systems must be at a balance for sustainability to be the outcome. A very strong and healthy community is an indicator of a sustainable society(Bishop, 2000).

  1. Corporate Social Responsibility

Driven by the plague of fraud, environmental mishaps and corporate scandals over the past decades, businesses around the world are practicing taking responsibility of everything not only their financial performance. The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) was created to help in the application of sustainability so as to provide guidance to businesses with respect to both the environment and their society. It also ensures that responsibility is given to their stakeholders too(Bishop, 2000).

Sustainable development has also been practiced in developing countries. A good example is Rwanda. The Rwanda Initiative for Sustainable Development (RISD) is a Rwandan non-profit, non-governmental Organization that puts its focus on policy action oriented advocacy and research. This organization also works on protection of the land rights and also promotion of good land governance. It also ensures that developments in the region are undertaken sustainably. It works to promote, foster and advocate for economic and social transformation through the protection and sustainable use of the natural resources towards the reduction of poverty in a participatory and equitable manner. Rwanda is now one of the cleanest countries in Africa and RISD can boast of contributing to this.

The anthrax was identified through thorough cataloging of biological signatures. Second, biological intelligence is carried out to identify manufacture or use of biological warfare agents. Manufacture or use of biological warfare agents can be detected immediately by obtaining biological signatures such as blood and tissue samples.

What Do Biometric Sensors Collect Information On?

Biometrics is a form of identity intelligence that is widely used to track individuals. This method of intelligence collection involves the use of technology to measure and analyze human’s biological data. The technology used in biometric intelligence collection has the capacity to recognize individuals based on their behavioral or physical characteristics. Biometric sensors collect information on human’s biological characteristics known as biometric signatures. These biological characteristics include fingerprints, voice pattern, and a hand shape.

The idea behind the use of biometrics to identify people is the fact that people are unique and each and every person has biological characteristics that are different from the other. Information on fingerprints has been used for intelligence collection for years. Apart from the three features named above, biometric sensors also collect information on the retina and on the iris. Biometric sensors are made in such a way that they will measure only those biological characteristics that it is required to measure. These characteristic are those that can be identified without any obstruction.

Chemical Sampling And Collection Targets It Is Used Against

Chemical sampling has become a popular intelligence collection method worldwide due to the increasing threat of chemical terrorism. This method of intelligence collection involves sampling of chemical and compounds generated from industrial processes in order to provide more information about activities that are being carried out within a given facility. Chemical sampling acts as a very powerful tool for detecting weapon production activities. It is normally used against specific types of collection targets such as on telltale chemicals released from industrial processes, chemicals released into the atmosphere following weapon production activities, and for detecting chemical signatures indicating the presence of illicit methamphetamine laboratories.

Materials Sampling Intelligence Collection Examples

Materials sampling intelligence collection involves acquisition of small quantities of material and determination of its nature using forensic processes. Basically, intelligence collection through materials sampling technique entails collection and analysis of trace elements that are released into the atmosphere from numerous military activities and industrial processes. Material sampling is widely used in intelligence collection because it offers great support for military planning and operations. Examples of materials sampling intelligence collection include the use of air sampling equipment carried by aircraft to detect atmospheric debris, and collection and analysis of radioactive materials to determine history of their production.

IT 301 : Project Management Course – What I Have Learnt

I have really learnt a lot in this class, not only about the concepts of project management but also about risk management. I intend to use the knowledge that I have acquired in this class to better manage future projects and to improve the capabilities of anyone else who may want to manage projects in future. First, I have learnt that in order to better manage a project, one must ensure that he properly understands the principles behind Crosby’s, Deming’s, and Juran’s philosophies of quality management. Although Juran’s approach was the most interesting to me, I think one should look at the project as a whole and decide on the best philosophy that if applied, will give the best results. Personally, I think the success nature of the project determines the type of philosophy that should be applied, and that there is not a single philosophy that fits in every project.

Additionally, by being in this class, I had an opportunity to learn the nine essential knowledge areas for project management. These knowledge areas include risk management, scope management, integration management, cost management, time management, communications management, human resources management, quality management, and procurement management. Under all these knowledge areas, detailed approach on how to accomplish functions of project management have been explained. The knowledge acquired in this class with respect to the nine areas of project management have moulded me to be an all round student who can easily manage both present and future projects. I will also use this knowledge to guide others on how they can achieve success when managing their projects.

Another thing that I have learnt so far in this class is the process followed in project risk management as well as the main purpose of conducting project risk management. According to Stackpole (2008), project risk management is conducted to reduce the probability of occurrence of a negative event and to increase the probability of occurrence of a positive event. In addition, I have been able to learn some of the obstacles that may prevent effective management of a project’s risks. For instance, some of the team members may impede project risk management because they tend to think that they do not have risks at a time when risks actually exist. If such issues are not solved on time, the probability of occurrence of negative events might be high (Stackpole, 2008).

The other thing that I was able to learn in this class is the role played by effective leadership in project management. During the entire session, I enjoyed being in the company of good leaders who helped me to understand the importance of creating a balance between different styles of leadership. I now understand why it was important for me to become part of this class because by being there, I have learnt how to use others’ leadership experiences to my advantage. It is a tool that used frequently to communicate in both forms; spoken and written. Since majority of tourism activities rely on climate-dependent attractions to attract tourists, they are greatly affected by changes in weather and climate. Examples of tourist destinations that largely rely on out-door facilities include countryside attractions and coastal resorts.

Causes of seasonality can be classified into two broad categories namely natural causes and institutional causes. Natural causes of seasonality refer to changes in natural occurrences such as weather and climate. The main variables that contribute to variations in the number of tourists traveling to a particular destination are differences in temperature, amount of rainfall, quantity of snowfall, and changes in hours of sunlight. Natural factors can make a place either attractive or unattractive for tourism activities (BarOn, 1975). For instance, areas with warm and cold climate are largely characterized by seasonal changes in the number of tourists visiting due to different tourist activities that can be carried out during such seasons. Natural seasonality is associated with variations in the number of tourists visiting a given destination on a yearly basis. Tourists have specific climate preferences which call for the need to distinguish between different types of tourists. For instance, some tourists will often wish to enjoy sunlight on the beach while others will prefer hiking on the snow (BarOn, 1975).

Institutional causes of seasonality in tourism mainly refer to changes in human behavior and are linked to three different factors namely holidays, and travel habits, and hosting of events. Institutional seasonality is largely dependent on economic and sociologic factors because some tourists will be motivated to visit certain destinations as a result of social, ethnic, or religious factors, while other people will visit certain areas because they like traveling and they have money to do so. The fact that both natural and social factors can generate seasonality makes the issue a very big problem that should be addressed as possible considering the degree of impacts that its brings to the Travel and Tourism industry as a whole (BarOn, 1975).

Seasonality poses numerous problems in the Travel and Tourism industry including ecological-related impacts, economic-related impacts, socio-cultural-related impacts, and employment-related impacts. Economic-related problems that result from seasonality are often observed during off-peak periods when very few tourists are visiting a particular destination. Unfortunately, during off-peak regions, these destinations experience loss of profits especially due to underutilization of resources are tourist facilities. The Travel and Tourism Industry in collaboration with the United States Travel Association is working very hard to ensure that seasonality problem is effectively dealt with. One important thing that the Travel and Tourism industry must understand is the fact that the problem of seasonality cannot be solved completely because natural and institutional causes of seasonality cannot be avoided. The nature of benefits reaped by tourists varies from one season to another. It is therefore important for the industry to understand these specific tourist needs for every season in order to prepare various destinations early to fully meet those needs. Strategies that are used to solve the problem of seasonality in the Travel and Tourism industry are intended to fulfill three main objectives. These include increasing demand during off-peak season, reducing tourists demand during peak season, and redistributing demand in both peak and off-peak seasons. Differential pricing is strategy that is intended to increase demand during off-peak and reduce demand during peak season (Koenig-Lewis and Bischoff, 2010). Under this strategy, tourist destinations with the help of the industry’s management charge relatively low prices during off-peak and high prices during peak periods. Differential pricing strategy helps the Travel and Tourism industry to ensure that people who were unable to travel during peak due to high charges get an opportunity to visit similar places during off- peak. This way, the tourist destinations are assured of constant flow of visitors throughout the year. This also includes introduction of new products such as special events that target specific target markets. This limitation can only end when the limited person is able to access any information that is beyond the limitation. This provide the person with the opportunity to know the actual truth and thus to be freed from the world of limitations and lies. This paper examines the Allegory of the Cave and description of a situation in which this myth fitted in my life experience.

Part I

I was brought up and raised by my uncle after the death of my parents in an accident. During my growth, I was made to believe how much my uncle and his family loved me and how much they sacrificed to take care of me. The situation was so real that I believed in their lies about taking the sacrifice of adopting me and having to share their little earnings with me. I would go without some basic needs though my uncle could manage to drive big cars and to take us to holidays now and then. I could take simple jobs during holidays to at least have some money to cater for some of my needs. Normally my uncle could manage to pay for my fees but he taught me to survive without demanding for things that I would need. I thought this was as a result of financial strain. I would do a lot of house work without complains as a way of saying thanks for what they had done to me. At all this time, I did not know that it is my uncle and his family that were living on my inheritance. His main intention was to deprive me from my inheritance. This force beliefs and information can be compared by Plato imprisonment in a cave. I got the wrong picture based on what was shown to me. I lived a lie just like the prisoners in Plato cave (Sayre, 2013).

Part II

I happened to meet one of my father’s friend one day, when I was working as a waiter in a hotel in town. He recognized me with the name in my work budge and similar physical appearance with my father. He was devastated by my state despite of all my inheritance. I was shocked and I decided to question him more about my father’s wealth. It is then that I realized that my uncle’s family was living on my inheritance. With his help I was able to get hold of my father’s lawyer and to read the will. I got all the information I needed regarding my father’s property. My uncle was supposed to be the care taker till the age of 16. I was already 17 but had not received my share. I questioned him and he became harsh and resistance. I had to seek the intervention of a lawyer to obtain my property back.

Part III

With the right legal procedures, I was able to get my property back as indicated in my father’s will. I was since then able to live a decent life with all that I needed, without any struggle. Since then, I realized that there is false love which is meant to oppress someone, while others are benefiting fully from it. I always advise my friends and other orphans to be as much connected to their parents’ friends and neighbors to know more about their origin, their parent’s life before they died and the wealth they accumulated. This will save them from oppression, loosing properties to greedy relatives and suffering in life. This exit can be employed while trying to overcome other property grabbers or to fight for individual rights in other situations including workplace discrimination.

Conclusion

Normally, people can take advantage of lack of knowledge or innocence of the other person to oppress them and to acquire more than they are entitled in life. This is done by ensuring that only partial truth or limited information is provided to these people in their entire life. However, the may come a time when these individual realize the truth by acquiring information from unexpected sources. This help them to fight for their liberalization and those who had enslaved them can only suffer the consequences of their actions

Introduction

Children exposed to a language rich environment are capable of learning different languages.  Children learn at different pace, therefore, in designing a physical learning space I the classroom, I am able to stimulate their imagination and foster their learning opportunities.  According to our reading text, “Children who have experienced languages used in a variety of context and in particular those who have stories and books read to them, attain greater proficiency in languages” (Piper, 2012).

In the classroom, there are three areas, one of relaxed reading, a writing center, play and engaging in the use of the projector, blocks, toys, games and puzzles.  The room is well lit and ventilated with calming music.  The teachers’ desk faces all areas so that she can observe her students and assist when help is needed.  Students are encouraged to work independently or in groups.

These areas are designed to help students in their phonology ( using flash cards), writing skills(paper crayons, pencils and paint),  auditory (reading), social/emotional development ( manipulatives-blocks, games and picture label), which will enhance their cognitive skills.  As children become more acquainted with each of these skills, they become more proficient in learning and succeed academically.  According to a quote from Dr. Seuss’ book, “I Can Read with My Eyes Shut”, “The more that you read the more things you will know.  The more you learn the more places you will go”.  Children watch your facial expressions during all sorts of experiences and moods and start to realize what facial expressions go with what moods/feelings. A child watches your body language when you speak and communicate and will start to learn what your body language means. (The Importance of Play for Speech and language Development).

Describe the activity or experience that the children can specifically be engaged in

The reading area has shelves with books for reading skills, and throughout the day the students are given a period to select books and read.  There is a round rug on which they can relax or the bean bag while reading.  Children can read quietly or share stories they have read.

In the middles children can sit at the table and engage in writing letters or symbols that helps in their writing construction and reading skills.  Students can also discuss among themselves what each lesson promotes.

On the other side, students can sit on the square rug with shelves that are labeled with different toys, blocks, games and puzzles, or simple watch an interactive game on the projector.  On each shelves of the classroom, the labels are written in English/Spanish and Sign Language.

The role of the teacher is to be attentive to the needs of her students, use appropriate materials for lessons, resource providergiving information to her students and instructing students on how to use the information, encourage students to achieve their highest potential, giving positive feedback, observe and assessing students skills and proficiency.

How you will assess the effectiveness of this area on language development.

Assessment involves analyzing data about the children strength, abilities and interest.  It also assists the teacher in developing a progressive feedback on each activity.  Effective assessment shows growth. (Flottman, Stewart, & Tayler, 2011).
