Major Differences Between Job-Order Costing and Process-Costing Systems

Major differences between job-order costing and process-costing systems

  • Job order costing refers to the costing method which used to assign manufacturing costs to the individual product or batches of products, whereas, process costing means a costing technique that is used to determine the cost of each process.
  • Job costing is basically performed in a situation where the products produced are of a specialized nature, whereas process costing is applicable where the products produced are standardized (Noreen, Brewer & Garrison, 2011).
  • Job costing involves calculating the cost of each of job, while in process costing the first thing is to calculate the cost of each process which is then dispersed throughout the number of units produced.
  • Job is regarded as the cost center in job costing, while in process costing, process is the cost center.
  • There is special treatment required for each of the processes in process costing, while in job costing a special treatment is required for each job.
  • In job costing, there is no transfer of cost from one job to another, while in the process costing, the cost of last process is transferred to the next process (Noreen, Brewer & Garrison, 2011).
  • There is very less possibility of cost reduction in job costing. In contrast, the scope of cost reduction relatively high in process costing.
  • The cost is determined only after the job is completed, whereas the cost of each job is determined in the process costing.

Example of a well-known company that might use job-order costing, and an example of a well-known company that might use process costing

  • A company that might use job costing is Vertical Roller. As a manufacturing plant, the company incorporate job order costing in order to control usage of its raw materials, labor hours and production equipment. The company considers each customer order as a separate job for the purpose of job order costing. On the other hand, a company like Chevron Corporation use the process costing system. This system helps this petroleum products’ company since it produces identical units of product in batches thereby employing a consistent process,

Conflict in Marital Relationship – Communication Interactions Paper

Communication Interactions Paper

This is an interaction paper that conveys the understanding of the concerns that cause conflict between people or institutions and the methods and techniques and resources currently being used to resolve the conflicts in the varied contexts. This is implemented by selecting a specific topic or conflict situation and demystifying and analysing the events within the conflict to particular situation. The essay will define the context of the conflict; provide relevant history and the limitations of the conflict survey. It will also examine the major issues of the conflict and their causes as identified in the topic chosen. The communication methodologies that are used to resolve the conflict will also be reviewed and the recommendations for respective approaches to be considered in resolving the conflict.

Topic: Conflict in marital relationship

Marriage is a union that is of social nature union or a contract that is legal between spouses, and establishes obligations and rights amongst them, amongst them and their children and also their in-laws (Guttmann, 7). It is an institution that ensembles love, trust, understanding and unity. People marry for varied purposes including social, legal, emotional, financial, and religious and many others. A marital relationship is a union of the spouses with mutual interests and the spouses live together for various social and legal reasons. In a successful marital relationship, spouses must have more positive than negative interactions. The positive interactions and pleasant times help spouses feel respected and loved.   As an institution that involves human beings, conflict is inevitable. All humans are different, have varied beliefs, likes, dislikes and values (Bradbury, Fincham & Beach, 970). These differences are what make up an individual’s perspective and perspective is the way an individual consider or view things. The manner in couples deal with marital conflict is a powerful predictor of successful marriage. All marriages, even the very successful of them all, have conflict. Marital conflict is a normal part of two human beings working out a life together.

Marital conflict is not just a misunderstanding in the partners’ opinion but rather a sequence of events that have been handled poorly and inconsistently thus deeply damaging the marriage union. The issues in any marriage institution have deteriorated to a point that anger, stubbornness, anger, bitterness, hurt have left most marriage broken and prevented effective marriage communication. Marital conflicts have a harmful effect on family, mental and physical health and decades of findings and research have produced a clear picture of the nature of conflicts by revealing couples who are behaviours or tendencies of conflict.

Four stages of marital conflict (Guttmann, 8)

These stages are what lead to marital discord.

Stage 1: this is where newly married couples are still new in the institution and do not know how to successfully resolve their differences. They settle issues by avoiding confrontation and thus have the ‘have it your way’ mentality.

Stage 2: this is now when the spouses have ignored each other enough to an extend of neglecting their basic needs. They now turn to individualism and want things done their own way. This is where discord begins in terms of who owns what.

Stage 3: This stage involves negotiating and compromising each other.

Stage 4: This is the stage where resignation is observed. Spouses in this stage are exhausted and the conflicts are at a stage where resolving is quite a hard task. This is where divorce is rife and expert advice and marriage guidance is required.

Research by various psychologists on marriage, especially the social psychologists whose main aim is to better assist couples experiencing marital conflicts in the last three decades showed that marital conflicts assume a special status in the institution of marriage. This was evidenced by three schools of thought.

  • First, many of the highly influential theories of marriage reflect the view that frustration results from spouses’ aversive and indecisive response to conflict (Grych & Fincham, 65).
  • Second, the research on marriage has entirely focused on the effect rather than the cause. That is what the spouses do when they disagree with each other and thus most interactions are inclined towards studies of conflict and problem solving (Grych & Fincham, 65).
  • Third is that conflict resolution techniques and skills are what are used by distressed couples as psychological intervention (Grych & Fincham, 65).

Marital conflicts entail very many things and can be virtually about anything. Many spouses complain about the major sources of conflict. These sources of conflict can range from abusiveness, which can either be physical or verbal, to their behaviour or personal characteristics. The issue is about division of labour and general sharing of family responsibilities. There is always a perceived inequality in the sharing of responsibility. This has caused marital conflict where the male folk tend to withdraw whenever conflict arises. Conflict over power or who is in charge at what time. This is strongly related to dissatisfactions in the marriage institutions. Couples reports of conflict over extramarital sex, excessive alcoholism and drug use is a predictor of divorce. Other reports are mainly from the wives of husband being jealous and foolishly spending money. The severity of most of the marital conflicts normally increases the likelihood of divorce. As much as the issue violence is not reported to be a problem by most couples, it is also a huge predictor of divorce in most newlyweds (Grych & Fincham, 70).

Spouses behave differently when conflict arises. An observational study conducted by psychologists with the underlying hope of identifying the dysfunctional trends and behaviours through couple therapy gave detailed information about how non-distressed and distressed spouses behave during conflict. At a time of conflict, couples who are distressed make more reactive and negative statements about each other and fewer positive statements than their non-distressed counterparts (Howard & Dawes, 478). They are also more likely to react or respond with unfavourable or reactive behaviours any time their partners behave otherwise.  All in all this so called negative reciprocity is more rampant across varied kinds of situations than is the ratio of negative behaviour thus making it the most reliable manifest sign of marital conflict. Negative behaviour is more frequently reciprocated in spouses who engage in physical aggression than any other spouses reported and this is a major cause of marital conflict amongst couples today.

Conflict in marriage can be looked at in several contexts according to Bradbury, Fincham and Beach.

  • Conflict in the context of affectional expressions and giving support
  • Conflict in the context of wider environment
  • Conflict in the context of the couples’ character traits and backgrounds.

There is atypical pattern of behaviour whenever couples are in distress or when they are experiencing conflict. These behaviours are more rampant or predictable amongst the distressed couples as compared to those who are not. These are normally dominated by chains of negative traits that usually escalate making it difficult for the couples to stop it. One of the biggest challenge for couples in today’s environment of marital conflict about negative exchanges is to stop the conflict and o adapt to each other’s flaws and to exit from such circles of negative perceptions about each other. This can be attempted or done through responses that are well thought out to repair the couple’s interaction and mode of communication. For example, listening to each other and not responding with irritation or sadness. However, if the partners respond to each other negatively and with rage, they will end up continuing the cycle of aggression thus enhancing the conflict again (Grych & Fincham, 73). The advantage of couples who are non-distressed is that they can handle conflict faster and in a structured and predictable manner in that they will appear to be more responsive to attempts of repairing the areas of conflict and thereby will be able to exit from marital conflict faster and with ease compared to their distressed counterparts.

The other behaviour pattern that is exhibited by couples who are undergoing marital conflict is the demand-withdraw pattern. This is where one partner presses the other partner with criticism, demands and complaints one hand, and in the other, the partner withdraws with passiveness, not acting on any of the aggression and at times becoming very defensive. Specifically, the most common situation is in the behaviour sequence where the husband withdraws from the hostile responses from the wife. This research finding was found to be very consistent with several studies showing that most wives display more effects of negativity and aggressive behaviour than their male counterparts (husbands), who tend to make statements or respond suggestive of withdrawal. Withdrawal o not engaging, in turn, plays a big role in decreasing marital satisfaction (Howard & Dawes, 479).

Are conflicts in marital relationships important? The answer to this question can be answered by first demystifying the reasons for conflict. Most marital conflict are caused by marital problems and issues such as;

  • Expectations
  • Financial problems
  • This entails include their discipline, diet and parenting issues
  • Sex
  • Responsibilities and shared tasks
  • Time away from each other
  • Toxic friends and peers
  • Family, especially the in-laws
  • Irritating behaviours and habits

The attention given to the conflicts in marriage can be understood when one considers, apart from the causes, but also its implication on the physical, mental and family health. These conflicts have been connected to the causing of symptoms of depression, eating disorders, alcoholism, absentee parenting and divorce. Marital conflicts are associated with poorer health and malnutrition. This is because the hostile behaviours at the time of conflict leads to stress and depression thus affecting the normal functioning of the body. The other issue is physical aggression. This has been experiences in many families in the United States who experience marital conflicts. It has led to physical injury. Cases of women being brutally injured and in some instances murdered by their husbands have been reported. Marital conflicts can be important if it is looked from the perspective of finding out the strengths and weaknesses amongst partners. When a conflict arises and it opens up doors of correcting and learning from each other, then the conflict can be termed as important since it has led to the strengthening of the marriage (Karney & Bradbury, 23).

In order to effectively resolve marital conflict, a couple must know, accept and adjust to their differences. All humans are different and it is important to understand these differences and then accept and adjust to them. Secondly, resolving conflict also requires couples to defeat selfishness. This is done through trusting each other and living in harmony. Third is the act of pursuing each other as a couple. This can be done successfully by checking on each other’s attitudes and circumstances and listening to each other.  Forgiveness is also key in conflict resolution (Koerner & Jacobson, 215). Both partners should learn the art of forgiveness because all human beings have flows and it only through forgiveness that couples will end up understanding each other’s flows and move on without prejudice and hate. Finally is effective communication. This is the main solution to most marital conflicts. When couples communicate well, openly and freely, they create a level of understanding that will overrule their weaknesses and make them adaptable to each other and thus reducing instances of conflict.

In conclusion, marital conflicts are what makes or breaks any marriage in today’s society. The supposition that management of conflicts in marriage is the key to successful marriages and that skills can be modified in a special therapy for couples has perceived very useful in propelling the research on marriage into the psychology mainstream. The stability of any marriage depends on how couples manage conflict amongst themselves.

Article Review – Chapter 15: Through Nonviolence to Truth – Gandhi’s Vision of Reconciliation

The paper is basically a review of the above-mention chapter of the book – “Forgiveness and Reconciliation: Religion, Public Policy, and Conflict Transformation”. It entails an overview of the problem area that has been discussed in the chapter and summarises the theories and conclusions that have been reached by the author. It also provides a personal review and assessment of the chapter giving the strengths and the weaknesses and finally explains how the contents in the chapter contributed towards the conflict management field.

Chapter 15 is basically demystifies the Ghandi’s concepts and vision of reconciliation. It is titled: Through non-violence to Truth and is written by Anthony da Silva. The main purpose of chapter 15 is to initially introduce two key concepts in regards to Ghandi of reconciliation and forgiveness compared with their eastern anchorages (Helmick & Petersen, 307). The second purpose of the chapter is to study the relationship and relevance of these two concepts to the present day discussion on reconciliation and forgiveness as demystified mostly from the perspective of the west. Third and finally is to illustrate through several case studies sourced from India that though forgiveness and reconciliation may be expressed and embedded through a variety of cultural descriptions, it still remains a universal human desire.

The article is clear and provides clear explanation on the issue of forgiveness and reconciliation from the Ghandi point of view. The ghadian concepts that have been listed to further demystify the subject that is, Satya (truth), Satyaghara meaning truth force, ahimsa meaning non-violence (Helmick & Petersen, 312). The chapter has also made a clear comparison of the mediaeval concepts of reconciliation of the current disclosures.

As a way of providing a clear picture of the Ghandian concepts of forgiveness and reconciliation, the strongest technique that has been used to bring out a clear picture are the three case studies. The first is the darshan salt March and Ghandian nonviolence and reconciliation, the second is Dalit’s, Non-violence and Reconciliation and third is Caste, water and reconciliation (Helmick & Petersen, 317).  Each of the case study puts a reader in a situation where he has to reflect on the case studied, do a reconciliation and finally reflect on the main points of the case study through a reflective question.

The article ultimately contributes towards the field of conflict management by helping in demystifying the concept of forgiveness and reconciliation from the Ghandian perspective and answers the question of the relationship between the mediaeval school of thought compared to the current or present day overview. The article shows how the act of forgiveness and reconciliation has helped warring nations to reconcile. It has used an example of the conflict between South Korea and North Korea, where there was a visible act of reconciliation between the two Korean nations populated by the same people not only filled the hearts of thousands of people with a craving for peace and unity but also caught the imagination of the world (Helmick & Petersen 322). In conclusion the article has a concluding remark that brings the reader’s attention to fact that it is desirable and possible to handle issues of confrontation and conflict in ways that bring people together and in ways that build rather than destroy through forgiveness and reconciliation. It provides illustration by giving the example of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.with his non-violent technique of uniting the African American community in its hustle for civil liberties.

Custodial Model of Incarceration Vs Rehabilitation Model In Correctional Setting

When examining the historical context of treatment in a correctional setting, it must be seen through both domestic and international viewpoints. Under the domestic view, the United States primarily uses a custodial model, which focuses on using incapacitation as the method of retribution and deterrence. In contrast, the international view, specifically Europe, uses the rehabilitation model. This model focuses on rehabilitating the person to become a productive member of society. In this assignment, compare and contrast the models of corrections from the perspectives of the United States and the United Kingdom. In this paper, explain which model you think provides the best treatment.

Assignment Guidelines:

  • Using the library, course materials, textbook, and Web resources, research the custodial model of incarceration of the United States and the rehabilitation model of the United Kingdom.
  • Address the following in a Word document of 2-3 pages:
    • How are these 2 models similar?
    • How are these 2 models different?
    • Which model do you feel is more effective at reducing the rate of recidivism?
    • Do you believe that both countries should adopt the same model of incarceration?

In 3-5 paragraphs

In 1895, a report called Report from the Departmental Committee on Prisons, also known as the Gladstone Committee Report(GCR), was developed. The purpose of this report was to introduce ideas regarding rehabilitation in the United Kingdom.

An example of the impact in the United States was the creation of the standardized sentencing guidelines and the continual amendments used to assist offenders. In the United Kingdom, the GCR influenced how rehabilitation programs were being developed.

Discuss how the Gladstone Committee Report addressed conflict over the words rehabilitation and treatment. In this discussion, identify which word you would choose and the impact it has on society.

Assignment Guidelines:

  • Using the course materials, textbook, and Web resources, research the Gladstone Committee Report.
  • Address the following in 3-5 paragraphs:
    • How did the GCR address the use of the words rehabilitation and treatment?

Malaria Demographics In India Review

Feared since the days of the Roman Empire, malaria remains a major health problem. This infection is caused by the transmission of a parasite that is carried from person to person by the bites of female mosquitoes. The symptoms of malaria include fever, shivering, vomiting and it also leads to anaemia. If left untreated, malaria can cause coma and death. The scale of the problem is huge – over half of the world’s population lives in areas affected by malaria and nearly 800,000 people a year die from its effects, mostly children under five years of age and pregnant women. Malaria is the world’s leading cause of childhood mortality, killing one child every 45 seconds.

Review this WHO Report on Malaria in India and answer the following questions:

  1. Summarize the demographic data presented in the report and comment on whether it provides useful data, and how current and extensive the information is.
  2. What additional demographic data would be helpful to prioritize malaria control efforts in India?
  3. Identify a minimum of 2 web sites where you could obtain this information.

4 Things To Explore Before Starting A Business

When starting a business, it is advisable to explore several things. I would use the technique of analysis of the business idea from four broad but basic perspectives. These include the customer, company, the competitor and the collaborator. It gives a chance to make a scrutiny of the business idea before dealing with the brand development. Scrutinize the company by thinking of this idea in terms of the service/product features, the benefits it could have to the customers, the personality of the company, the core messages to be relayed as well as the core premises that will be made to the customers.

Secondly, scrutinize the customer. In a business, there are three different customers that one may need to keep in mind in relation to the business idea. These include the influencers who are the organization, the individual or the group of people who have an influence on the purchasing decisions, the purchasers who are persons who write the check or make the decision to buy and finally the users who are a group of people who interact directly with the service or product.

Third, the competitors need to be looked at. These include the primary, secondary as well as the tertiary competitors. One needs to know how to tailor their services when competing with each of these groups of competitors. Finally, the collaborators are the last to be scrutinized. These are the people who may have an interest in your business but may not be directly rewarded for the success that may be realized by your business. These can include associations like the media, as well as other organizations that are responsible for selling your business to your customers.

The technique I will employ is the SWOT analysis meaning analyzing the strengths of the product, service or industry, the weaknesses of the product which might include the design flaws, or the service which include the high prices and as well analyzing the potential threats that it may have on the economy. This technique enables one to have an understanding of the flaws that the business might face as well as the strengths, the product development, the cost external factors may have such as politics, exchange rates, culture and many more. SWOT analysis also enables the entrepreneur to understand quickly if their product or services will succeed in the current market environment. With this technique, I can be able to tell whether my idea has any issues that need to be dealt with before its execution.

I got my idea of the business from a friend who had tried it before. She took her time to explain to me the concept and what it entirely involved. I got to understand the cost of purchase of the commodities and the expected interest, the potential customers as well as the challenges expected. This enabled me to locate my business in an environment where I could be able to maximize on my profits. I felt this to be a good idea because I got to witness the same business succeed. The basis of any business is to ensure customer satisfaction and profit maximization. I believe this is exactly what my business will achieve.

Every business faces different types of challenges. Thus, before starting a business, it is fair enough to critically find out the kind of challenges that you might face in line with the business and how you as well intend to deal with the challenges.

One of the challenges I expect to face is the issue of hiring the employees. Competing and finding the top talents can sometimes be tough. The employees are set to move from business to business in search of a better pay. To solve this issue, I have opted to hire fresher candidates since they have a chance of staying longer in the business and as well pay them a fairly comfortable salary and increase it once the business grows.

The second major problem is the increasing profits. It is common for small businesses like mine to struggle with the increase of profits and cash flows. In order to deal with this, I have opted to consistently provide quality products and services so as to attract and maintain my clients. The final problem I expect to face is the issue of government regulations. This is however a problem I expect to face later in the business as the business grows. Thus, I try as much as I could to comply with all the government regulations that have an impact on my business so as enable it to run smoothly.

Risk Register – Assignment Instructions

For this Assignment, you will practice techniques that you can use to communicate your assessment of a project’s risks to other stakeholders. Develop a risk register to manage and reduce risks identified before and during the picnic project; you will need to document risk mitigation strategies being pursued in response to the identified risks and their rating/ranking/grading in terms of likelihood and seriousness. Your document should be able to provide sponsors, stakeholders and senior management with a documented framework from which risk status can be reported. Risk register updates are often used to update project documents and are an important input to the communications plan. The risk register will communicate risk management issues to stakeholders. This document will provide a means for seeking and acting on feedback to encourage the involvement of stakeholders; it will also identify the mitigation actions required for implementation of the risk management plan and associated costs.

In your Assignment, make headers that include the elements or steps you take to create the register. For example:

  • Part 1: Outline the register, assign hi/med/lo and why.
  • Part 2: Assign probabilities.
  • Part 3: Etc.

You can use the company picnic scenario to create your risk register. You will need to identify risk hazards, assess the probability of the risk occurrences, make corporation decisions about the risks and how they can be mitigated, implement controls, and determine how they will monitor risk. The prompts from this week’s Discussion will give you ideas about how to develop the risk register for this Assignment.

Role Of Social Media in Politics – Magazine Style Article

You will write a magazine-style article that addresses the role of social media in politics. Our readings offer some disagreement on this issue. They also point to both national and international political scenes. This is a tough assignment. You probably have some experience with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.), but you may not have thought a lot about the technology or its social implications. You also probably have some knowledge of current political events and major political matters of the last few years (e.g., Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street, the last Presidential election, etc.), but you have probably not studied these matters in depth. In this article, your audience are other college students, who probably have similar levels of knowledge to yourself. Social media does seem to change the way we engage in politics. Whether or not it is a significant difference appears to be a matter of debate. This is a matter that might be of interest to those who have a stake in politics (which should be all of us). Your job is to find a way to connect to this issue, make it important to you, and then attempt to make it important and interesting to your audience. The Process

  • Readings and discussion: as you work your way through the readings and participate in discussion you should try to keep in mind how the points being raised connect with your own experiences with social media. Where do the arguments the others make strongly conflict with your experience? Where do the resonate? Most importantly, where do the authors’ perspectives shed new light on your experiences?
  • Your social media experience and politics: depending on your own use of social media, you’ve likely had some experience with political action online. Perhaps you’ve had some experience with local political issues being raised via social media (e.g. circulating a petition, organizing meetings, spreading the word, etc.).
  • Writing an article: As you write your essay you should consider how the authors appeal to their audience through a style that is not dry and academic but still manages to make a complex argument and deal with difficult issues in a thoughtful way.

Requirements

  1. Your article must be a minimum of 1000 words in length.
  2. You must participate in the online, peer review workshop.

Evaluation Criteria

You will be evaluated by the following criteria, roughly in order of decreasing importance:

  • Discussion of the role of social media in politics
  • Engagement with at least one of the readings from this module
  • Ability to address a general audience
  • Engagement with the style and form of the article
  • Thoughtful response to workshop feedback
  • Spelling, grammar, other stylistic concerns.

Separation of Powers Doctrine In the USA Discussion Questions

The separation of powers doctrine in the U.S. commonly refers to the division of federal government responsibilities into three distinct branches to limit any one branch from exercising the core functions of another.  The intent is to prevent the concentration of power and provide for checks and balances.

The traditional characterizations of the powers of the branches of American government are:

  • The legislative branch is responsible for enacting the laws of the state and appropriating the money necessary to operate the government.
  • The executive branch is responsible for implementing and administering the public policy enacted and funded by the legislative branch.
  • The judicial branch is responsible for interpreting the constitution and laws and applying their interpretations to controversies brought before it.

For the last several years, Congress appears to have been embroiled in political gridlock.  According to the Pew Research Center, the first year of the 113th Congress (2013-2014) was the least productive year for the legislature in recent history with only 55 laws being passed.  Source:  Congress Ends Least Productive Year (Links to an external site.).  Congressional approval ratings were at 13.5% as of July 12, 2014.  Source:  Real Clear Politics (Links to an external site.).

As a result of the this gridlock, the Federal Reserve has embarked on an aggressive program known as quantitative easing (“QE”).  Under the Fed QE program, the Federal Reserve Bank has been buying treasury notes and mortgage backed securities for the stated purpose of lowering interest rates and spurring economic growth.  Source:  Federal Reserve

In addition, President Obama has announced that he will use his power to issue executive orders to distinguish himself from a “dysfunctional” and “obstructive” Congress.  Source:  The Hill (Links to an external site.).  John Boehner, the majority leader in the House of Representatives, has announced his intention to sue the President over his use of executive orders.  Source:  CNN (Links to an external site.).

Please answer the following questions:

  1. Do we have a constitutional crisis brewing?  Is the separation of powers doctrine being eroded?  Explain your thoughts.
  2. If one branch of the government is being obstructionist or dysfunctional, should it be up to another branch of the government to act?  Explain
  3. Does Boehner’s lawsuit really force SCOTUS to unfairly take a side in this case?  Why or why not.

Family Dynamics Role In Child Development

Family dynamics play a major role in how children develop. These influences include structure, expectations, parenting styles, and involvement. To understand more about how childhood experiences with your family have influenced current identification of self, take a few minutes and think back to those days.

  • Analyze the role that family structure, expectations, parenting styles, and involvement of caregivers played in your development.
  • Reflect on your experiences and share any that you are comfortable sharing. You can use questions such as the following to guide your reflection:
    • What was the best thing that your family said about you or did for you? Try to remember one exact day when that was said or done for you. Which person did this? Remember now what you felt then. When do you feel this way now?
    • Did you have a nickname? How did you feel about it?
    • Did family members tell you what you would end up being or doing? Was it what you wanted to be or do? How did you respond?
    • How do you think your family would have described you to a close friend of theirs? What were they most concerned about for you?
  • Would you do or react to things differently now than you did then? Why?

Make sure you evaluate your experiences in the context of major theories and concepts of cognitive, social, and physical development during middle childhood. Support your responses by citing information from the online notes and textbook and other scholarly sources. For example, describe the cognitive stage you might have been in at the time of specific events, according to Piaget, Erikson, or Freud. How did this influence how you interpreted the events?  You can also discuss the parenting style that you think was used by your parents/caregivers.

Team Norms and Procedures – Leadership of Teams

The comment was made that norms are implicit, and tend to develop over time. However, it was also observed that virtual teams can not afford the luxury of such a passive process, and need to take proactive steps to establish explicit norms.

Expectations:

Identify 10 specific behavioral norms (five communication and five task norms) that you feel are essential to the smooth performance of virtual teams.
Explain why you feel these norms are essential.
Propose a specific action plan virtual teams could use to develop and enforce task and communication norms.
Use the background readings to support your arguments. The following reading provides some additional ideas for how a co-located team could an engage in norm-setting. You should model your action plan for virtual teams after this type of analysis.

Why Therapy is Essential for Treating Addiction

Most people assume the remedy for recovery involves detox and abstinence from the drugs/alcohol. The truth is, this is only the beginning. Recovery is a life long process, one that requires discipline and most importantly intensive treatment and therapy. Addiction is usually a symptom of an underlying issue such as trauma, abuse, grief, and many other mental health disorders. Addiction has been named “disease of the brain”. This complicated idea suggests that the issue stems from the brain. Complex and often confusing, this disease attacks the thinking and behaviors of an individual. Therapy is one of the most useful tools utilized to promote long term sobriety.

There are many different types of therapy integrated into the recovery process. Almost all addiction programs recognize this and have found that there is not a one size fits all method to this approach. Behavioral therapy is perhaps the most effective in treating the root of addiction and preventing cravings and relapse. However, there are many different forms of therapy. The goal is to identify and address fundamental issues the addict may be facing. For centuries, therapy has been used for treating addiction of all sorts.

  • Matrix Model was developed in the 1980’s during the cocaine epidemic. Originally designed to treat stimulant abuse, this therapy method proved to be overwhelmingly effective. The Matrix Model was intended to be a 16 week program that includes individual therapy sessions, group therapy, relapse prevention, family therapy/education, CBT, DBT, and encouraging 12 Step meetings. Contingency management is another major component of this method as well, rewarding sobriety and avoiding punishment for relapse.
  • Family Therapy is essential for recovery because not everyone is affected by addiction. The addict does not suffer alone, all members of family and friends are affected by the disease. It is important for the family to be educated on the disease of addiction. It’s not uncommon for individual therapy to include family sessions. The goal is to unify and reunite family members who have been affected. Most addicts will remain in therapy if other members of the family do as well. Healing within the family unit has shown lower relapse rates and higher levels of motivation from the addict through positive reinforcement and support.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a short-term psychotherapy that promotes problem solving skills. CBT primarily focuses on solutions rather than revisiting old problems. This method of therapy encourages development of new coping strategies, changing detrimental cognitive thinking, and problem solving skills. CBT has also been used in treating co-occurring disorders as well.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) works to address co-occurring disorders simultaneously. Enhancing behavioral skills, through mindfulness and emotional regulation, is the primary focus of DBT. This type of treatment encourages stress management, decreases impulsivity, and aims to strengthen self esteem through discipline and structure.
  • Trauma Therapy is also a vital form of therapy used for addiction treatment. Recent studies have shown that half of adults have experienced some form of trauma in their childhood. Unresolved trauma is a leading cause of substance abuse. Addicts turn to drugs/alcohol to self medicate the pain of PTSD. Trauma therapy requires the patient to identify the trauma by creating a safe environment for the individual to share painful experiences. Once the patient has identified trauma the therapist will incorporate tools useful in helping to process, change old belief systems, and promote healing.

Every addict requires a recovery plan that best suites their individualized therapeutic needs. It is important therapy promotes a safe and positive collaboration between the addict and therapist. Avoiding condemnation and confrontation, the therapist must empathize with the patient in order to establish a secure and trustworthy relationship. Education in therapy is also quintessential for recovery, it is important the addict understand that addiction is a disease and not a matter of willpower. Through setting expectations the individual will set goals to accomplish throughout the duration in therapy which will ultimately encourage taking further steps towards positive behaviors. Therapy must also employ cognitive behavioral change through identifying triggers and impulsivity which retrains the brain’s functionality. Family therapy will help to establish boundaries and healthy communication between the family and the addict in hopes of setting a guide for a strong sober support. Evidence has proven that recovery is a lifelong process that requires maintenance and consistent spiritual and individual growth. Therapy is an effective tool used in cultivating the foundation for long-term recovery.

Trident BUS499 Course – All Discussions With Sample Answers

BUS499 Module 1 Discussion

The material in this module tells us that many companies place disproportionate emphasis on the financial perspective at the expense of the other three perspectives. Give an example of an organization with which you are familiar from either previous coursework, the news, or personal experience where this has been the case. What were the results of this focus on the financial perspective on customers and other stakeholders? Be as specific as you can and give concrete examples.

BUS499 Module 2 Discussion

Can you think of any organizations that do not have relevant “customers” to take into consideration? If there are such, how are they different from other organizations where all parts of the BSC operate equally?

BUS499 Module 3 Discussion

Organizations are complex systems with multiple stakeholders. Sometimes the interests of various stakeholders can conflict. For your initial post to this discussion, give an example of a business process where the interests of two (or more) stakeholders are in opposition. For your second posting, choose an example of such a conflict posted by another student, and suggest a way that the business process can be changed so that the interests of the stakeholders can be brought into sync.

BUS499 Module 4 Discussion

The home page of this module identifies several measures of the learning and growth perspective, such as:

  • Real-time availability of accurate customer and internal process information to front-line employees
  • Ability to launch new products
  • Ability to create more value for customers
  • Ability to penetrate new markets
  • Alignment of employee incentives with overall organizational success factors
  • Rates of improvement in critical customer-based and internal processes

Consideration of these measures reveals that it can be difficult to quantify these factors. For your first posting in this Discussion, identify one specific example of a learning and growth measure that you feel could be critical to an organization but difficult to measure. For your second posting, choose another student’s measure and propose a metric that could be used to quantify it.

BUS499 Module 5 Discussion

In your opinion, what are the most difficult aspects of simultaneously balancing the four perspectives in the Balanced Scorecard? Be specific and give examples from your Case analyses and/or SLP.

BUS499 Module 6 Discussion

Given the readings and assignments in this course and the BSBA program, identify and discuss two important concepts that you believe are essential to be successful in business administration. How has this course been useful to you in helping you to understand how these concepts apply to business operations?

Trident BUS499 Course – All Session Long Projects With Sample Answers

BUS499 Module 1 SLP – The Balanced Scorecard & The Financial Perspective

The Module 1 assignment has two parts. First, identify an organization in which you have access to at least some information concerning financial data, staffing and human resource systems, marketing and customer relations, information systems, and operations. While most material on the Balanced Scorecard is written from the private, for-profit point of view, it’s perfectly possible to use this approach with public or non-profit organizations as well.

For the second part of this assignment, consider the organization’s mission and strategy from the perspective of its financial operations (from your work on the Case, your previous coursework, and your background reading, you should be reasonably clear what such operations are). In this section of the assignment you’ll begin to identify objectives and measures relevant to that perspective. If you’re unclear on just what objectives and measures are, here is a presentation that describes what they are and how to write them: Objectives, Measures, Targets & Action Plans.

SLP Assignment Expectations

When you have thought about it and made your selection, specify (in 2–3 pages):

  • The name of your organization
  • What this organization does—its mission, vision, and overall strategy
  • The access you have to information about this organization. Remember, you’ll need information about its financial performance, marketing, internal operations, strategy, and management systems.

Once you’re reasonably clear on what’s involved, think about your organization and its finances, and then:

  • Identify at least three objectives for improving the organization’s financial position and show how they relate to the mission, vision, and strategy of the organization.
  • For each objective, develop at least one meaningful performance measure (metric).
  • For each objective, identify at least one expected level of performance (target).
  • For each objective, identify at least one new action or program that needs to be developed to ensure successful implementation of the organization’s strategy (initiative).

Here’s a table that you may wish to copy and fill in:

Objective Measure Target Action

BUS499 Module 2 SLP – BSC Flexibility & The Customer Perspective

For Module 2, consider your organization’s mission and strategy from the perspective of its potential, prospective, and present customers. In this section of the assignment you’ll begin to identify objectives and measures relevant to that perspective. Refer back to the presentationObjectives, Measures, Targets & Action Plans if you need to.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Once you’re reasonably clear on what’s involved, think about your organization and its customers/clients/users/service recipients/whatever-you-wish-to-call-them, and then:

  • Identify at least three objectives for the organization’s customer service perspective and show how they relate to the mission, vision, and strategy of the organization.
  • For each objective, develop at least one meaningful performance measure (metric).
  • For each objective, identify at least one expected level of performance (target).
  • For each objective, identify at least one new action or program that needs to be developed to ensure successful implementation of the organization’s strategy (initiative).
  • Comment briefly on the relationships of the customer service objectives that you’ve identified here to the financial objectives that you identified in the Module 1 SLP assignment. How do they help to fulfill those objectives? If they don’t (and they don’t have to), what makes them more important than objectives that would relate to finances?
  • Finally, do you wish to make any changes to your Module 1 objective write-up in light of your Module 2 experience?

BUS499 Module 3 SLP – BSC Implementation & The Internal Business Process Perspective

For Module 3, consider the organization’s mission and strategy from the perspective of its internal business processes (from your work on the case, your previous course work, and your background reading, you should be reasonably clear what such business processes are). In this section of the assignment you’ll begin to identify objectives and measures relevant to that perspective. Refer back to Objectives, Measures, Targets & Action Plans if you need to.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Once you’re reasonably clear on what’s involved, think about your organization and its business processes, and then:

  • Identify at least three objectives for improving the organization’s internal business processes, and show how they relate to the mission, vision, and strategy of the organization.
  • For each objective, develop at least one meaningful performance measure (metric).
  • For each objective, identify at least one expected level of performance (target).
  • For each objective, identify at least one new action or program that needs to be developed to ensure successful implementation of the organization’s strategy (initiative).
  • Comment briefly on the relationships of the process objectives that you’ve identified here to the finance objectives that you identified in the Module 1 SLP assignment and/or the customer service objectives that you identified in the Module 2 SLP assignment. How do they help to fulfill those objectives? If they don’t (and they don’t have to), what makes them more important than objectives that would relate to finance or customer service?
  • Finally, do you wish to make any changes to your Module 1 or Module 2 objective write-ups in light of your Module 3 experience?

BUS499 Module 4 SLP – Strategy Mapping & The Learning And Growth Perspective

For Module 4, consider your organization’s mission and strategy from the perspective of its learning and growth (from your work on the Case, your previous course work, and your background reading, you should be reasonably clear what such activities are). In this section of the assignment you’ll begin to identify objectives and measures relevant to that perspective. Refer back to this presentation on Objectives, Measures, Targets & Action Plans if you need to.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Once you’re reasonably clear on what’s involved, think about your organization and its learning and growth processes, and then:

  • Identify at least three objectives for improving the organization’s learning and growth, and show how they relate to the mission, vision, and strategy of the organization.
  • For each objective, develop at least one meaningful performance measure (metric).
  • For each objective, identify at least one expected level of performance (target).
  • For each objective, identify at least one new action or program that needs to be developed to ensure successful implementation of the organization’s strategy (initiative).
  • Comment briefly on the relationships of the learning and growth objectives that you’ve identified here to the financial objectives that you identified in the Module 1 SLP assignment, the customer service objectives you identified in Module 2, and/or the internal business process objectives you identified in Module 3. How do they help to fulfill those objectives? If they don’t (and they don’t have to), what makes them more important than objectives that would relate to customer service, business processes, or financial operations?

BUS499 Module 5 SLP – Causal Chains And Strategy

As you recall, in MGT301 (Principles of Management), attention was given in SLP 5 to building critical thinking and problem-solving skills, along with information-literacy skills. In the SLP 5 assignment for MGT499 (Strategic Management), you had the opportunity to develop your business critical-thinking skills more fully by applying strategic management principles to your chosen organization in the process of addressing key stakeholders about strategic initiatives that may be of concern (older iterations of MGT499 focused solely on the shareholder).

And finally, in BUS499 (BSBA Integrative Project) you will focus your Module 5 SLP on honing your critical-thinking and information-literacy skills.

You’ve put a lot of work into your analyses of the four perspectives considered in the Balanced Scorecard process. Now it’s time to put it all together! In this module, you’ll be preparing an argumentative essay on the SLPs from Modules 1–4.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Utilizing Trident’s library resources, identify at least one case study of an organization that utilizes a Balanced Scorecard approach, and three additional peer-reviewed papers on the topic of the Balanced Scorecard. Do some additional reading as well. Based on the case study found in the literature, conduct a critical analysis arguing whether your “SLP organization” would do a better or worse job of implementing the BSC approach. If your organization has already implemented BSC, then compare implementation success of your “SLP organization” with the case study from the literature.

In conducting your analysis formulate a thesis statement and provide a well-thought-out argument in a 3- to 5-page document that compares implementation as described in the case study with what you would expect out of your “SLP organization.” Here are a couple of example thesis statements you might want to consider with appropriate revisions.

  • Based on my review of [XYZ Corporation’s] implementation of the Balanced Scorecard approach and review of recent BSC-related literature, I believe it would (or would not) be worth implementing the Balanced Scorecard approach in my SLP organization.
  • Based on my review of the current literature I believe my chosen organization has (or has not) done a better job of implementing the Balanced Scorecard approach than [XYZ Corporation].

Compare and contrast the BSC implementation success of the organization outlined in the case study you found in your literature search with the success you would expect (or have experienced) in your chosen organization. Utilize the peer-reviewed papers to support your arguments. Above all, your arguments should be convincing and well supported by the literature.

Be honest! If you don’t think your organization is up to the challenge, then say so and provide some academically based resources to support your claim. For instance, if you do not think the leadership of your organization would be able to pull it off, then find some leadership-based research to help support your claims. Remember, convincing the reader is key.
