Cultural Activity Report – A Visit To Museum of Modern Art


The museum I visited was the modern museum. The modern museum houses many pieces of art that are important in showing the various works that are associated with the modern society. The museum mostly deals with modern art and as such focusses on the different events that have happened and making art the reflects the modern society. The museum is quite exquisite in its arrangement as there is a modern touch to the surroundings of the institutions especially the rooms that house the art. The attendees in the museum are mostly young adults including men and women together with few elderly people. Some are sitting on the chairs in the exhibition rooms while others are staring at the various pieces of art. The museum is located in New York on the 53rd street. I ventured into the museum at eleven in the morning on 18 March.

The various sculptures are mostly found outside and few within the museum. Several pieces caught my attention when I ventured into the museum that I thought was involved and eye-catching was the painting by Edgar Degas, A Strange New Beauty. The painting is drawn in such manner as showing surfaces only and not focusing on the details associated with the face of the person. The painting is a monotype where the painter employed the use of the metal plate and then the painting passed through a printing press. The painting shows two people, a man and a woman. One form the first glance could think that the picture was etched or some other coloring using charcoal since the painting is in black and white. The painter mostly made his paintings then used the printing press to generate them in black and white color. The painting was done in the 1800s and contributes greatly to the methods that were used in the 19th century to ensure that modern painters learn from them and perfect on their paintings. The painting was shown on the sixth floor of the North exhibition gallery.

Another good piece in the museum is the self-portrait with cropped hair by Frida Kahlo. Fridha Kahlo was a feminist in the 1900s and eventually divorced from her husband. The picture shows her wearing men’s clothing at that time and thus speaks greatly on the issue of feminist. The picture thus tends to bring out the different events that happen during that era with feminism at the forefront and thus how women were treated. In wearing the trousers in the painting, she tended to show the displeasure with the state the women were being. An important article helps one to go back in history especially in issues related to women’s emancipation. Therefore, the painting is critical regarding showing the history affecting feminism and helping to appreciate how the women fare have gone in their quest for equality.

The museum has various galleries that display the various items associated with premodern and postmodern times. The museum houses many types of work that range from premodern to postmodern art. The build is vast, and the various rooms are sectioned to house various galleries associated with different paintings. It has a hotel, auditorium, and bookshop. The picture is clearly placed in the different rooms for exhibition with modern furnished arrangements. They are numerous sculptures outside the exhibition together with those inside the building. The building uses technology that includes multiple screens to air some of the paintings to the viewers. The museum shows various arts using many spaces and is one of the most elegant and influential museums regarding displaying art. The museum is an elegant feature itself especially with the arrangement and exhibition of the various paintings together with the sculptures in place.

Cultural Activity Report – National Gallery of Art Museum

Late last month, I visited the National Gallery of Art (NGA) close to the Capitol Hill’s foot with three of my friends. When we got into the West Building, one of the NGA’s edifices, I got the sense of being in the medieval Roman Pantheon. The edifice’s floor plan is planned around a grand rotunda coming off as the pantheon. The fountains and greenery just outside the rotunda provided us with a calming haven. As I walked within the edifice and the exhibition spaces within it, I felt illuminated by the natural light streaming into the spaces. The light appeared to unite the spaces on purpose. The most captivating NGA galleries are undoubtedly the ones hosting Italian Renaissance (IR) artworks. We spend most of time we were within the NGA at the galleries. We were lucky to have two NGA staff to guide us through the galleries. Particularly, the IR “Madonna and Child Enthroned” by Gentile Fabriano painting and the “Saint John in the Desert” painting by Domenico Veneziano were striking (Cinotti, 1975; Joost-Gaugier, 2012).

The painting by Fabriano has a sophisticated, cosmopolitan, and broad-based flavor. It is done in brilliant colors. It comes off as a combination of ornamental patterns and textural richness. In the painting, Jesus’ mother, Mary, is sitting on a delightfully covered bench. The material covering the bench has one of ends lying on a floor that is ornately tiled. The principal figures in the artwork are ornately attired. They are in the company of four angels who are hardly visible. The angels appear incised into a background of gold leaves. Jesus appears to be insisting on Mary’s divine role by gesturing towards “Mater”, a Latin term on her mantle’s collar. In one of Jesus’ hands there is a string tethering a butterfly. Notably, in classic Christendom, the butterfly symbolizes Jesus’ resurrection (Cinotti, 1975). Like the Veneziano’s painting, the painting by Fabriano is defined by a polished decorative stylishness associated with the IR. When I visited the NGA, the two paintings struck me as fusing the Middle Age’s stylized art with the IR’s naturalistic interests.

Such interests were rather pronounced in the Veneziano’s painting, done in the first half of the 15th century (Cinotti, 1975). Notably, “Saint John in the Desert” is one of the Veneziano’s most highly praised works. It comes off as having originally been an element of a grand altar in the IR era. It captures various events in the life of John the Baptist. The painting took me by surprise since, from reading the Bible, I perceived the biblical John as having been am aged, saintly man with a pronounced beard and unrefined donning animal skins. However, in the Veneziano’s painting, John is a youthful, worldly man wearing well-cut clothes.  In the painting, John’s figure is graceful.

We decided to visit the NGA at the insistence of one of the friends, who is always quick to declare his fondness for the artworks collected by Andrew Mellon. Most of the artworks are housed by the NGA presently. He asserts to those who care to pay attention to his takes on America’s status as a nation defined by artwork that Mellon longed for a USA with an art museum of the same standing as the art museums of other grand nations. According to me, the most captivating NGA galleries are indubitably the ones hosting IR artworks. I found the paintings by Fabriano and Veneziano to be rather arresting. The paintings have the typical stylish, cosmopolitan, and international IR flavor.

Dance Field Study – Next Dance Concert Report

The event attended was titled Next Dance Concert, which was hosted by The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance. The performers were dance students and professionals in the realm singled out by the main choreographers, Jodi Porter, to communicate various dance related themes. I attended the first session of the event, which was on 5th May 2017 at the CalArts’ Downtown Center for Contemporary Arts. I realized through the eight routines prepared and performed by the group that dance could be used to communicate a number of relevant themes and perspectives that affect the society. However, for such an undertaking to occur, dance and presentation components have to be used and incorporated into the rendition.

Upon arrival at the venue, I opted to sit near the podium to have a better and comprehensive view of the performance. I also endeavored to interact with other people in the audience to get their expectations and compare them with mine. I noted that the expectation among the audience was rather blunt and plain, but there was general excitement in the venue with regard to the eagerness to witness the group perform. When the group started performing, the audience looked more cheerful, but it was rather hard to tell if their expectations had been met. The first dance routine was titled “Password: Heartbeat” choreographed by Jodi Porter presents an illusion kind of dance where the dancers were signifying a sense of closeness and interaction. Their rhythm and cooperation were commendable to confirm that socialization is an important aspect to observe in any setting. It was easy to internalize the presentation and link any developed perspectives to the title of the dance routine. With such a rendition, it was easy for the audience to finally interact and share experiences or expectations about the show. The interactions became livelier as people started conversing and exchanging ideas about the first performance.

When it came to the theatrical and technical elements, the team seemed to have prepared well for the rendition based on the fact that a consistent flow of organization and cooperation was evident throughout the session. The dance routines had both women and men with different sets of costumes purportedly to ensure that the audience differentiated the genders. Each dance routine had new dancers and used different music beats or rhythms. There was a unique connection in the manner in which the dancers intertwined their spirits and wit the music that was being played at every instance. Another coherent aspect that I appreciated about the presentation was the lighting of the stage. The dancers always appeared bright regardless of the fact that the general theme of their attires was dark. Also, the lighting aspect enabled the audience to have a better understanding of several norms that were being communicated in the dance routines. For example, the performance titled “Portrait of Mother and Child” choreographed by Paola Escobar showcases the intimate relationship that is normally apparent between parents and their children; a connection that cannot be realized or fostered from any other source. The lighting element allows the audience to clearly witness this aspect and internalize the cultural identity issue that was being presented.

As elaborated earlier, the team was well prepared to showcase a number of dance-related elements and intertwine them with social aspects that affect or influence the society. In relation to this, the dancing movements were uniform and unique in all ways. Each rendition had both men and women dancers with each having their set of dance techniques to administer to the audience. Some of the techniques were rather complicated based on the struggle that was apparent from the faces of the dancers. Regardless, most of them proved good at the challenge and ensured that they used the platform to communicate certain aspects. Personally, I realized that group has so far been successful at nurturing young talents from various social settings. As was clarified earlier, the team included both dance students and professional dancers who were using the stage to propagate their careers. With such a commendable performance it was evident that the choreography approaches used by the team leaders and mentors were resolute enough to guide and motivate young talents. This fact had a positive impact on the perception of the audience as many people only expected to notice the different themes being communicated from the renditions. From the analysis, dance can be used as a social activity to bring people from various walks of life in one place for a common good or objective. It can also be used to influence young people into adopting practical and good behaviors in their respective life endeavors.

I enjoyed the dance routines and approaches used by the team to lighten up the audience. I learned new dance perspectives and social themes while attending the concert. The interaction bit was also an exciting undertaking that motivated me to continue focusing on the dance session that was being

As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of “cultural activity” that fits well with our course and then report on your experience.   Your instructor will require you to propose an activity and get instructor approval before you do it and report on it (students should look for any instructions in that respect).  Every effort should be made to ensure that this is a hands-on experience (not a virtual one), that this activity fits the HUM111 class well, and that the activity is of sufficient quality for this university course. The two key types of activities are a museum visit or a performance. NOTE:  This must not be a report on the same activity (and certainly not the same report) as done for another class, like HUM112.  For instance, one might go to the same museum as done for HUM112, but this HUM111 report will focus on entirely different works and displays.

  1. Visit a museum or gallery exhibition or attend a theater or musical performance before the end of Week 10. The activity (museum or performance) should have content that fits our course well. Have fun doing this.
  2. Write a two to three (2-3) page report (500-750 words) that describes your experience.
    • Clearly identify the event location, date attended, the attendees, and your initial reaction upon arriving at the event.
    • Provide specific information and a description of at least two (2) pieces (e.g. art, exhibits, music, etc.).
    • Provide a summary of the event and describe your overall reaction after attending the event.
    • Use at least the class text as a reference (additional sources are fine, not necessary unless required by your content).  Your report should include connections you make between things observed in your activity and things learned in the course and text.

Note: Submit your cultural activity choice to the instructor for approval before the end of Week 5 (earlier is even better). Look for guidance from the instructor for how or where to make your proposal.  You may also seek advice from your instructor (provide your town/state or zip code) for a good activity in your general area.

Visiting a Museum

  • It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what there is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
  • If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
  • Every effort should be made ahead of time to identify a museum that has items and works one can easily connect to our HUM111 class and book.  Since HUM111 covers from ancient times to the 1500s AD, it makes more sense to focus on items from that time frame. In general, museums with artistic cultural artifacts and fine arts work better than history museums.
  • Any questions about whether a museum-visit activity fits the course and assignment well enough will be decided by the instructor when the student seeks approval for the activity.  Any alternative activity  outside the normal ones listed here, such as for those limited by disability or distance, will be determined by the instructor. Normally we do not expect students to travel over an hour to get to an approved activity.
  • Make notes as you go through the museum and accept any handouts or pamphlets that the museum staff gives you. While you should not quote anything from the printed material when you do your report, the handouts may help to refresh your memory later.
  • The quality of your experience is not measured by the amount of time you spend in the galleries or the number of works of art that you actually see. The most rewarding experiences can come from finding two or three pieces of art or exhibits which intrigue you and then considering those works in leisurely contemplation. Most museums even have benches where you can sit and study a particular piece.
  • If you are having a difficult time deciding which pieces to write about, ask yourself these questions: (1) If the museum you are visiting suddenly caught fire, which two (2) pieces of art or exhibits would you most want to see saved from the fire? (2) Why would you choose those two (2) particular pieces?

Attending a Performance

  • Check your local colleges to see if there are any free or low-cost performances or student recitals. Student performances are generally of almost the same quality as professional performances, but typically cost much less.  However, performances of high school level or lower will not meet this requirement.
  • A performance that is relevant to a HUM111 course is more difficult to find than a performance that would be relevant to HUM112 (which covers from 1600 to the present).  But, our course does cover Shakespeare and Greek tragedy and drama, so any performances of those will work. One can sometimes find music performances of music from the Renaissance or Reformation period, or even earlier.
  • Any questions about whether a performance activity fits the course and assignment well enough will be decided by the instructor when the student seeks approval for an activity.  Any alternative activity  outside the normal ones listed here, such as for those limited by disability or distance, will be determined by the instructor. Normally we do not expect students to travel over an hour to get to an approved activity.
  • Unlike visiting a museum, where you can wear almost anything, people attending performances are often expected to “dress up” a bit.
  • Take a pen or pencil with you and accept the program you are offered by the usher; you will probably want to make notes on it during or after the performance.
  • Turn off your cell phone before entering the auditorium. Do not use your phone to record the music or to take pictures or videos. To play it safe, turn the phone off.
  • Most long musical performances have at least one (1) intermission. If the lights start blinking, it is a sign that the performance is about to begin.
  • Look for very specific things (such as a particular piece of music or the way certain instruments sounded at a specific time) which tend to stand out as either enjoyable or not enjoyable. Be sure to make notes of the things which you find enjoyable as well as the things which are not enjoyable.

If a student is unable to attend a cultural event in person due to circumstances beyond the student’s control, then the instructor will recommend an alternate event/activity for the student to “attend” online. The “virtual” event/activity is usually only for students who, due to their physical location, cannot possibly attend an event/activity in person; typically, these students are stationed overseas or have no means of transportation. Experience shows most museums and activities are modest in cost and manageable for students, and you will often see students from other universities there on similar course projects. If you are facing financial hardship, keep in mind that many museums have a free day each week and performance discounts are often available for students and veterans, among others. Feel free to ask your instructor to help with finding low-cost options. If you believe that you have a legitimate reason for attending a “virtual” activity, you must contact the instructor no later than Week 5 for your request to be considered.

Cultural Activity Report – Leopold Museum In Vienna

Leopold Museum In Vienna; it is situated in the MuseumsQuartier compound in downtown Vienna features Australian modern masterpiece. I visited the museum basically to see the work and arts of Australian artists Egon schiele, Oskar Koko Schuka and Klimt. Klimt had been my most favorite artist; the thought of physically viewing and touching his original work significantly contributed to my decision and choice of the museum.  I was really dying with an overwhelming curiosity to finally be in Leopold.

It was on Thursday, July 16th, 2015, on reaching the museum at exactly 15 minutes past 11am, before even getting closer to the main gate, everything I saw was appealing; it has a unique strategic location. The entry to museum is 9E for adults.  The sun’s rays were not any stronger and there was a gentle blow of wind, a weather that suited my experince.  It is a modern building, light, airy, and easy to navigate. It is really a cool museum with an appealing work display on sight. The display is spread over seven floors, all equipped with lift access. I enjoyed the tender and welcoming nature of the receptionist service providers.  Inside, there is a very good and enriching café serving refreshments with waiter service throughout the day.  Amazingly, to my best fun addition, there was live music on that Thursday evening. What an enjoyment!

There were extensive collections of Egon Shiele’s works.  To the fun part, I found major art pieces by my most favorite funs Klimt and Kokoschka. These two are the best known Australian artists. They are fascinating.  I had enjoyed viewing Klimt’s arts through books and other written materials. I loved them little did I know that I would love them even more on viewing the actual real arts thereby getting to touch and feel them. Klimt’s arts were based on the female body, there were big displays especially on the second floor that than the other floors. His paintings, mural and sketches felt real on sight, I admired this allegories and portraits. I loved his figurative work of his landscape painting that captured the impossibly dense forests and gardens. There was one decorative painting named fruit tree by the lake that was amazingly beautiful with healthy green fruits and soothing sun rays over them. I always admired his talent.  Because of what I viewed, I became a fun of another artist by the name Schiele. There was a special exhibition of Schiele’s landscapes featuring paintings of houses and townhouses. It was amazingly wonderful, full of reality on viewing.

A part from the main two eventful art displays of Klimt and Shiele, Thursday was an eventful day to me, it was indeed the day that ended so soon that my expectations’ enjoyed strolling around the area; I bought tickets for different entries at the information centers as well as shops. From the information centre, I gathered that Leopold Museums holds more than 500 exhibits collected by the Rudolph, well despite these many exhibitions, most people who visited the Museum with me came specifically to see the works of  Australian’s finest  expressionist and secessionist painters, Schiele and Klimt.

Could I feel tired, there were gold velvet seats to rest on my weary bones on-this was very comforting. I took very many photos of my favorite paintings, most of which were from the arts of Klimt. Furthermore, there was a comforting accommodation in the nearby hotel. I left the locality on the next day Friday morning. Great inspirations flowed over my head. The visit must have elicited and awaken some painting talents in me.  I loved the trip and its influence. The progress I am currently making in painting undoubtedly has its roots from this trip.

Cultural Activity Report – A Visit To Flamenco Cante Master Workshop

I am a residence of Vienna, Georgia 31092 and I managed to attend a Flamenco Cante Master Workshop in Vienna, Virginia 22180 on December 4, 2011. The cultural activity took place at Born 2 Dance Studio in Vienna, Virginia. Being a Sunday, many people did not go to work and they managed to attend the function which was very entertaining (Perez, 2015). People travelled from as far as Philadelphia to attend the workshop. Some people had come straight from Edwin’s Sunday Matinee show at the Gala Theatre. The Flamenco Singer, who was also the guest artist at the event, was Esperanza Fernandez. The guitar was played by Behzad Habibzai. Estela Velez, the director of Furia Flamenca organized the Flamenco Cante Master Workshop (Perez, 2015). Upon arriving at the event, I was not sure of what to expect from the workshop because I had not attended a similar event before. Historically, I have associated Flamenco with the Spanish culture alone but I was surprised to see a mixture of cultures in this event-.

The two unique piece observed at the event were the instruments and the music as it was sung by Esperanza Fernandez. The guitar, specifically known as the Flamenco guitar, was the common instrument at the event. Flamenco guitar, which was played by Behzad Habibzai, consisted of six strings that gave a very high and rhythmic pitch (Chuck, 1998). Apart from the Flamenco guitar, palillos is another instrument that was used to add tonal quality to the Flamenco music. Palillos is a hand musical instrument that produces a sharp contrasting sound in a repetitive pattern. The dancers used two pair of palillos simultaneously to maintain a high pitch. Another essential rhythmic element in Flamenco music that was used at the event is the Palmas which basically refers to clapping. The musician and the dancers both used Palmas to create bits and keep a fast tempo (Perez, 2015).

Esperanza Fernandez accompanied the Flamenco song by changing styles to create mood variation. In addition, she performed both singing and dancing concurrently to keep the audience attentive and entertained. She also incorporated the Palmas component into the music as a way of maintaining nice tones. Fernandez used her songs to teach things really slow. She was audible enough and made sure that everyone got each and every word she mentioned, and even understood how she applied her words in her dancing. The instruments and the Flamenco song as performed by Esperanza Fernandez kept the Cante Master Workshop very lively (Perez, 2015).

Generally, the event was not only entertaining but teaching. The singer, guitarist and the dancers, all played their roles effectively to ensure that nobody found the event boring (Perez, 2015). All these figures demonstrated great experience in Flamenco music. From the event, I was able to learn how music can be used to preserve the cultures of different communities. Andalusia is the origin of Flamenco music and Esperanza Fernandez sung and danced at the event while maintaining the Andalusia culture. From what I observed at the event, I learnt that people who want to learn more about the culture of Andalusia can benefit greatly from Flamenco songs like those performed at the Cante Master Workshop. Therefore, Flamenco songs serve both as a preservation of Heritage of Humanity and as forms of entertainment in different environments.
