Self-Assessment Reflection

Becoming self-aware is an ongoing process requiring introspection. The more often people practice self-reflection, the more opportunities they have to understand their own behaviors and adapt their approaches to working with other people, which can improve both your own and other’s abilities to meet their professional goals.

In a 750-1,000 word reflective essay, address the following:

  1. Briefly summarize why you selected each self-assessment and the results you obtained on each assessment.
  2. Identify the leadership style that closely aligns to your philosophy of care, and explain what appeals to you about that style.
  3. Reflect on how you might incorporate elements of that particular style as you exercise leadership in a practice or health care organization setting.
  4. Discuss any particular areas for improvement the assessments helped you identify and some steps for improving your leadership capabilities.

You are required to cite three to five sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content.

Self-Assessment Reflection – Sample Leadership Style Reflective Essay

Self-awareness has traditionally been regarded as one of the most fundamental capabilities that an individual can possess. There is a common consensus amongst the intelligentsia linking the understanding of one’s self with personal development and attainment of subsequent professional goals. According to Eurich (2017), introspection is particularly critical when fashioning a successful leader for it allows individuals to acknowledge their natural inclinations and work towards compensating for their shortcomings (p.35). In this particular task, I selected the Emotional Intelligence Assessment, Personality Assessment and Learning Styles Assessment to aid in the arduous endeavor of solipsism.  The Emotional Intelligence Assessment was an ideal selection which would provide vital information critical in the practice of self-development and information about any inherent blind spots. I also selected the Personality Assessment test as a crucial psychometric that would allow me to gain a comprehensive understanding of my aptitudes and individual personality. The Learning Styles Assessment was also essential in understanding my inclinations, strengths and weaknesses, which are critical when seeking to achieve goals based on one’s ability. My personalized report from the Emotional Intelligence Assessment indicated that I attained a score of 84 in my ability to recognize, distinguish and express emotions. The Personality Assessment test categorized me as a protagonist; typically known for being born-leaders such as Barrack Obama, Maya Angelou and Isobel Crawley. Based on my VARK Questionnaire results from the Learning Style Assessment test, I was categorized as multimodal personality as an indication of my spontaneous nature.

The transformational style of leadership closely aligns with my philosophy of care. I believe that a nurse should always strive to deliver patient-centered care while ensuring continuity in the services provided. As a provider of care, healthy relationships are critical for patients grappling with debilitating conditions throughout the process of recovery. My philosophy of care also espouses working with patient’s families and loved ones to bolster the support needed during illness. Furthermore, I believe that their spiritual and cultural beliefs should be valued while supporting optimal functioning while in the healthcare facility. Transformational leadership adheres to specific tenets that require staff to observe higher ideals and internal values within the workplace environment. The “greater good” now becomes the most imperative objective as staff members develop altruistic dispositions when attending to patients. Transformational leadership is also an adaptive model which allows flexibility in the healthcare environment which has customarily been over-managed (Khan, 2016, p. 46).. Through inspirational motivation using a top-down approach, managers in healthcare facilities can successfully ensure that the patient’s interests always take precedence. Besides, the principles of transformational leadership ensure that nurses are responsible for all their dealings while implementing the professional practice in the workplace environment.

The faultless influence, rousing motivation, intellectual incentive and individual consideration elements of transformational leadership can be incorporated aptly in a healthcare organization setting. A leader can apply the faultless influence element by making sure that they are always charismatic while setting high standards for subordinates. Outstanding professional practice often means that the leader will be revered for their dedication and soon become a source of motivation for others (Marshall & Marion E. Broome, 2016). In a leader in a health care organization setting can devise creative strategies to communicate their vision to staff members during meetings to ensure that they reach set objectives. The rousing motivation element can be applied by guaranteeing intellectual stimulation. By so doing, staff members are challenged to grow, develop and advance innovative solutions to common healthcare challenges. For instance, nurses can be allowed to dabble in evidence-based practices using available assets and applying their findings towards the improvement of care. Staff members are, thus, bound to approach every challenge with a renewed problem-solving mindset which paves the way for a new nursing culture. A leader can apply the individual consideration element by mentoring subordinates and being mindful of emerging career opportunities. The healthcare sector benefits from this practice since the advancement of employees result in future cost-effective and top-notch care. In general, the application of the elements of transformational leadership is capable of causing a paradigm shift; making nurses more informed and participating actively in healthcare reform.

There are several areas for improvement that the evaluations helped me identify. Although an overall score of 84 in the Emotional Intelligence Assessment is relatively high, it allowed me to pinpoint several blind spots of which I was previously unaware. In particular, self-regulation and empathy were areas of concern that required keen focus. Self-regulation allows an individual to become aware of their emotional state and impulses as a precursor to managing them (Salovey, Brackett, & Mayer, 2014). It would enable one delegate tasks when overburdened and adapt to any sudden change. Self-regulation, as a leadership capability, can be improved by responding appropriately to stressful situations and always taking responsibility whenever culpable. Likewise, empathy allows a leader to identify and comprehend specific emotions in the employees. Staff members interoperate empathy as care for the team and an expression of genuine concern. Adopting compassion as a leadership practice allows one to gauge the emotional state of subordinates through, for example, their body language and responding appropriately to their debacle.

Information Privacy Issues and Laws in The Hotel Industry

I have decided to focus on hotel data privacy rules and regulations. Sharing personal information online has become commonplace. The personalization of technology and customer service is fueled by e-commerce and social media. Customers’ privacy and data protection have become major issues in all industries, including hospitality (Migdal & Palmer, 2022). A hotel’s privacy and data protection policies are essential. A data breach or privacy controversy can greatly influence a hotel’s reputation, even if it seems unimportant in the grand scheme of hotel operations. The hotel sector is subject to current and future regulations. In addition to the damage to one’s reputation, some nations have passed legislation, such as the CCPA, which impose large fines for failure to comply.

The California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), enacted by the state of California in the United States, is one example of legislation governing hotel data privacy. The bill was signed into law on June 28, 2018. The regulation has a wide influence on the use, management, and sharing of personal data. California’s Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA) and CCPA regulations provide customers more authority over the personal information that companies collect about them. New privacy rights for Californians include the right to know what personal information a company has about them and how it is used, the right to have personal information gathered from them removed, and the right to refuse the sale of their personal data. Guests should be given flyers or pamphlets outlining the hotel’s privacy policies as a courtesy by the establishment (Privacy Research Team, 2022).

Hotel and motel rooms are covered by the Fourth Amendment’s ban on illegal search and seizure, according to recent court opinions. Consent is one of the exclusions that allow for searches and seizures without a warrant. According to the Andrews cases, hotel owners and operators have a unique duty of care to their visitors, as in many jurisdictions. According to Privacy Research Team (2022), this obligation includes ensuring reasonable privacy, safety, and security for their guests. Suppose this jury’s decision is interpreted as a sign of future jury verdicts in similar cases. In that case, hotels that fail to protect their visitors’ privacy, safety, and security could face dire consequences. Every hotel owner and operator should ensure that its written policies on guest safety, security, and confidentiality are current and that all workers are adequately trained to ensure compliance.

There is no better time than the present. Hotel staff members should be aware that they are prohibited from revealing a guest’s room number to anyone else without their consent. Even though this is widely accepted as regular industry practice, some individuals will undoubtedly devise new methods of obtaining this and other types of information for unlawful or unethical ends. Aside from the Andrews case, these policies should be revised regularly to keep up with new legal developments, and employee training should be a regular part of the business. Consult with legal advice if you have any doubts about whether a policy complies with the law and industry standards in the jurisdiction where it is implemented (Privacy Research Team, 2022).

Some harsh penalties have been spelled forth by the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) in light of the increasing frequency and severity of privacy scandals and data breaches. In addition to the fines, The Attorney General’s Office of the State of California can bring civil penalties of up to $7,500 for intentional violations of the CCPA. Once the Attorney General’s office contacts businesses, they have 30 days to address the issue. If the infraction is not remedied within this time frame, the company will be subject to financial penalties. The Attorney General’s Office can seek up to $2,500 in civil fines for offences that were not the fault of the violator. The Attorney General’s office will notify businesses of the infraction within 30 days of receiving the notice. Those who fail to correct the problem on time will be subject to financial fines. If their unredacted and unencrypted data is breached and stored on a company’s server, customers can sue for up to $750 in damages or actual damages (whichever is larger). If a customer serves a notice on a company, the company has only 30 days to fix the infraction before civil fines are levied (Trivago, 2017).

The stakeholders ‘ roles in conducting an internal data audit are requirements for the hotel industry’s compliance with privacy and data protection laws and regulations. They can start by learning how and why your property collects and uses individual personal data. Then figure out who on your team has access to that data and any third-party service providers or partners with whom you share it (Trivago, 2017). The stakeholders may build a management structure that includes a person responsible for data security and privacy. This can help them get a better idea of what has to be changed to meet CCPA compliance requirements and streamline operations, reduce data collecting, and enhance security. A fantastic way to make sure you are in compliance with rules and laws is to do an IT infrastructure and security review.

Obesity and Physical Activity – Annotated Bibliography

Withal, J., Jago, R., & Cross, J. (2009). Families’ and health professionals’ perceptions of influences on diet, activity and obesity in a low-income community. Health & Place, 15, 1078-1085.
This article is about a research study conducted to explain the presence of nutrition problems among low-income earners. Withal, Jago and Cross set out to identify the factors that challenge consumption of balanced and health diets among low-income earners. The research took the qualitative approach where the researchers conducted interviews with various focus groups. The National Health Service (NHS) determined participation in the research by organizing for the participation of various families and health professionals.  The research concluded that overweight/obesity problems were prevalent due to lack of adequate measures of healthy living, which is a factor of various factors affecting low-income families. Lack of access to all the ingredients and components of healthy diets is among the factors challenging the consumption of healthy diets in low-income families. Lack of access to such components is due to high costs, which low-income earners cannot afford. The research recommended that behavior change regarding the social, cultural and family life should be the main strategy of dealing with the challenge of unhealthy consumption, which has led to obesity among children and the youth.
Walker, R., Keane, C., & Burke, J. (2010). Disparities and access to health food in the United States: A review of food deserts literature. Health & Place, 16, 876-884.
Walker, Keane and Burke main interest was studying matters related to availability of healthy foods in some geographical locations. The cost of nutritious foods in some areas is influenced by lack of access, which leads to nutrition disparities in the United
OBESITY3
States. Researchers in this study did a secondary research on various sources of information regarding food deserts in the United States. They reviewed various articles from January 2008 to January 2010, with food access in the United States being one of the considerations.  The study found out that the geographical environment of individuals influences their diets. Low-income environments have relatively low number of supermarkets and food outlets compared with high-income environments. Racial disparities also lead to creation of food deserts in some environments.  Therefore, most of the nutrition-related health problems experienced in low-income environments are due to lack of access to healthy and nutritious diets.
Ewing, R., Meakins, G., Hamidi, S., & Nelson, A. (2014).Relationship between urban sprawl and physical activity, obesity and morbidity – update and refinement. Health & Place, 26, 118-126.
The effect of physical activity on obesity and other nutrition-related health problems has been a subject of discussion in many forums. This study invested in identifying the relationship between physical activity and prevalence of obesity and other nutrition problems. The researchers started by identifying various items that are fit to be included among physical activity. Travelling to work and carrying out routine duties are among the items that are fit to be considered as physical activity. The researchers identified three health conditions that are often related to lack of physical activity and obesity. However, the study concluded that physical activity is not responsible for the increased cases of overweight adults, especially in the United States. The environment as well as factors within the environment have led to increased prevalence of obesity among adults in the United States. Therefore, the only solution to the problem is through the development of environments that will help eliminate the existing environmental challenges.
Berge, J., Wall, M., Larson, N., Forsyth, A., Bauer, K., &Neumark-Sztainer, D. (2014). Youth dietary intake and weight status: Healthful neighborhood food environments enhance the protective role of supportive family home environments. Health & Place, 26, 69-77.
Adolescents are most vulnerable to nutrition-related health problems due to their diet patterns. This research study investigated the interaction between local neighboring associations among adolescents. The research study wanted to identify the influence of neighboring environments on healthy living among adolescents in a local home setting. The study investigated factors within the two environments, for example family income and parental guidance, which affect healthy eating behaviors. The study sought to fill the existing literature gap related to the issue of obesity among adolescents. Many scholars have recommended intake of fruits and low calories of fats as an approach of reducing cases of obesity among adolescents. However, the research found out that parallel implementation of healthy living policies in both the local and neighboring environments is the most feasible way of dealing with obesity among adolescents. This is because adolescents value the co-existence between local and neighboring environments as an important determinant of behavior. Therefore, according to this study, the solution towards obesity lies in various factors within the environment.
Ding, D., & Gebel, K. (2012). Built environment, physical activity, and obesity: What we learned from reviewing the literature? Health & Place, 18, 100-105.
Ding and Gebel conducted a secondary research to evaluate the interaction between the built environment and physical activity/obesity. The researchers questioned the relevance of some research studies that have been affected by a myriad of flaws in both their conceptual frameworks and application of statistical methods. For instance, travelling and physical activity in some environments has been associated with obesity problems among individuals. However, the studies have neglected looking at all possibilities regarding physical activity and obesity that capture the reality. The research recommended a different approach to research pertaining physical activity and obesity in different environments. Studies should concentrate on specific physical activities and characteristics of the environments under scrutiny in order to avoid conceptual mismatches. However, it is worth noting that the researchers in this study rest upon the fact that the environment has an influence of obesity and other nutrition problems affecting individuals in the society.

Why Marxist Communism Failed – Christian Perspective

From a Christian perspective, why did Marxist communism fail?

From a Christian point of view, Marxism failed primarily because of its atheistic perspective. Despite philosophies that are in many ways compatible to Christian ethics, both Marx himself, and the governments that chose to govern on the basis of his philosophies, expressly forbade the practice of religion. Marxist believed that under capitalism, man is alienated from other men and from himself. According to Marxist, man can only overcome alienation by doing away with private property and creating a communist society. Socialist economic policy reflects that notion by attempting to equalize the distribution of wealth and stronger governmental economic controls. As Christians God warns us not to use coervice power from the state to bend society into conformity with his kingdom. Not to fall prey to the secular myth that the state can transform you. The state can influence behavior by taking peoples property, livelihood, and families. But as shown in the rapid disappearance of communism philosphy’s influence on Eastern Europe in the 1900’s.
