Evidence Based Practice (EBP)
Evidence-Based Practice is defined by Sackett (2002) as the judicious, explicit and conscientious use of the current best evidence to make decisions about the care of a patient. That is, a problem solving approach in which clinical decisions within a healthcare organization are made with an integration of the best available scientific evidence with the best experimental (practitioner and patient) evidence.

Evidence-Based Practice is applied in the nursing practice as it entails integrating patient values, clinical expertise, and the best research evidence in a process of decision making for the patient (Newhouse, Dearholt, Poe, Pugh & White, 2007). The clinical expertise encompasses clinician’s cumulated experience, clinical skills and education which facilitates the safety and effectiveness of the nursing interventions, and ensure precision of nursing assessment measures for attaining best nursing outcomes.
The EBP framework provides for patients to bring to the encounter his/her personal unique concerns, preferences, values and expectations which are final incorporated in the entire care delivery process. Evidence per sie doesn’t make the decision, though it helps in supporting the patient care process (Ackley & Ladwig, 2008). An effective integration of the three components: clinical expertise, values and preferences of patients, and research evidence into clinical decision making process ensures that there is quality of life and optimal clinical outcomes.
