Managing Individual Behavior – Personality, Career, and Job Effectiveness – Sample Paper


As a young and ambitious scholar, psychologist Carl Jung sought the insight of Sigmund Freud around the issue of personality (Mischel, 1999). Jung felt that studying the mechanisms surrounding human thought and how it influences personal development would help foster an understanding of who we are. The young scholar had the conviction that self-awareness influences personal growth be it positively or negatively. Contemporary scholars led by Gregory Mitchell concur with Jung that self-awareness is essential for the development of behavioral attitudes and personal identity. With this understanding, I seek to know exactly how my personality type affects my career and job effectiveness (Mischel, 1999).


In his broader line of thought, Jung espouses that the human mind differs from that other animals in its ability to reason and make rational choices; animals lack free will, which humans possess. Free will informs our decisions and choices of actions. In the seminal pamphlet handed to Sigmund Freud, Jung explains that what we believe is who we are. He also notes that experience drives who we become. The mind is a powerful tool; its belief and convictions become us (Mischel, 1999).

After taking a test using Jung’s meter technique, I found out that I am an extrovert; some would say in a less clinical term a ‘people’s person’. My belief is that my family, cultural, social or religious background may define who I am but nothing can predetermine my ability to choose and act. For instance, my cultural beliefs would not get in the way of making reasonable decisions at work or distinguishing right from wrong.

My personality, as the test reveals, has both strengths and weaknesses. Influenced by my childhood raised by a single mother, I learnt responsibility since my mother was my role model.
