Online “Predators” and Their Victims – Case Study Diagnosis, Prognosis, Prescription and Proscription

The selected case study is “Online “Predators” and Their Victims.” Based on the case study the main sexual issue is online perpetration of adolescence sexual abuse, where adults target children aged from 13 years to 17 years with intention of developing intimate relationship with them and initiating a face-to-face sexual contact. These individuals target underage children through their social media profile and try to influence them sexually, either by posing as teenagers of their age, or just as adults highly interested in having a romantic relation with these children, but with a promise of love (Wolak et al., 2008). These sexual predators mostly target girls, with boys only being targeted by gays. The problem seems more serious since there is no way to control teenage activities on social media. Social media permits them to create their accounts where they giver personal details, update more about their personal life, and accept friendship from strangers. Moreover children of this age are less supervised by their children while using the internet. This increases their chances of being vulnerable to internet sexual crime. The incidences are more common among children who have experienced abuse in the past.  Another factor of internet initiated sexual crime against children is the use of children pornographic materials (Wolak et al., 2008).

Diagnosis

The diagnosis is internet sexual crimes against teenage and adolescent children mostly girls. This involves the perpetration of internet-sexual crimes against underage children who cannot consent into sex, despite not being forced into it. The victims are normally children; mostly girls, between 13 and 17, while the perpetrators or predators are male adults. The act is not violent, but involves minor, who according to the law, they do not have the mental capacity to consent to having sexual affair with adults. Other symptoms include having intimate conversation between children and adult strangers via email, chat room, or SMS. The symptoms may include sending pornographic material where the child may send her nude photo to the perpetrator.

Prognosis

The likely course of children sexual internet-crimes is the uncontrolled used of internet among teenagers. Although parents ensure strict regulation of internet use among children below 13 years, they tend to give more freedom to teenagers, failing to supervise what they do in the internet and who they interact with. Another underlying issue is the inability of social media owners to regulate people’s activities in the internet. They permit children signing up into these accounts and also fail to regulate their interaction with strangers or “friends”. Another underlying issue lack of personal control on what one post on the social media, making people to give sensitive personal information and status that expose them to predators. Advancement of social media platform to permit sharing of videos, photos, and live chat also add to the growth of internet sexual crimes. Another underlying issue is the complexity of bringing internet-based sexual crimes into book, making it easy for most offenders to escape punishment and to continue with their behaviors.

Prescription

It is considerably hard to put effective regulatory measures on social media platform, since one can lie their age and still have minors registered on these platforms. The best prescription would be monitoring of individual social media content ensuring immediate termination of an account that sent or receives pornographic materials and romantic messages that seems to be directed to underage child. Social media owners should consider reporting such accounts to the relevant authority for further investigation. Instant arrest and prosecution of anyone found guilty of internet sexual crimes against children should be enhanced. Police should more vigilant in this to create fear to all men who have the tendency of perpetrating online sexual crimes against children despite the complexity of the matter. Children should be encouraged to report cases of online initiated intimacy talks to their parents or police officer, even when it happens to a friend.

Proscription

To ensure that this cases are eliminated or to prevent them from occurring in the in the future, the government and other relevant non-governmental organization should launch a campaign to educate parents and teenagers about online sexual predators, their target, and why parents should maintain strict control of what their children do online even at their teenage. The children should be educated on danger of being involved with strangers in the internet and how it can affect their life. Children should also be discouraged from positing personal information and everything happening in their life to prevent them being picked as victims.

Policy on this Matter

Internet sexual crimes are highly initiated by permitting children below the majority age; 18 to use internet without control. Thus, this problem can effectively be controlled by imposing a policy forcing parents, schools and other institutions handling children of this age to restrict what they can access in the internet. Parental or guardian internet control should be made a law where internet connected devices accessible to them should have a restriction to educative sites only but cut them from social media and other related platforms. Cyber caves should also provide these programs for all underage children to ensure that they are not exposed to criminals and sexual internet crimes.
