Ethnic Groups Experiencing The Most Severe Alcohol-Related Problems In The U.S.

The impact of alcohol consumption in the US vary greatly based on ethnicity. Generally, blacks and Hispanics have higher complete abstinence rates from alcohol as compared to non-Hispanic whites among other groups. However, those of Blacks and Hispanic who consume alcohol takes more that it is required and have frequently demonstrated a high binge drinking rates. White Americans with Hispanic origin experience very high rates of Cirrhosis death as compared to Blacks and whites of non-Hispanic origin. Blacks also experiences a greater risk of alcohol-related diseases as compared to whites. Traffic deaths associated with alcohol are high among Alaska natives or Native Americans as compared to other minorities. Although DUI self-report are recorded across mixed race, Hispanics are over represented among DUI-related mortalities and drunk driving. Alcohol contributed to 11.7% of deaths among Native Americans between 2001 and 2005, which is more than two times the general American public death rate. It can therefore be concluded that alcohol impact is experienced extensively among the minority groups. This include increase in social problems that include family breakups, school dropouts, early pregnancy and increase in the poverty level among other problems especially among blacks (Niaaa, 2015).
