Ernest Hemingway Literary Analysis

please write a literary analysis that examines a single poem or short story from Ernest Hemingway. Support your claim(s) about the text with examples and details from the poem or story.

There are several ways to analyze a work of literature. Two of the most common are below:

1. A formal approach–which examines one (or more) of the literary elements in a work and explains how it relates to the whole, thus contributing to a text’s overall meaning or significance. Possible elements to consider include plot, character, theme, setting, conflict, structure, point of view, genre, style, tone, imagery, symbolism, irony, narrator, foreshadowing, paradox, allusion, metaphor, rhythm, rhyme, etc.

2. A critical approach–which examines a work by relating it to the historical, social, cultural, or political situations in which it was written to show how the author was influenced by personal experiences, events, prevailing attitudes, or contemporary values.

Each of these approaches requires careful reading of the primary text, as well as a debatable claim that will need to be supported or “proved” with evidence (direct references, quotations) from the text. Remember, writing about literature is a way to broaden your own understanding and to share your own reading experience. While the second option (a critical approach) will obviously involve some background reading, you should not be going to outside sources with the idea of creating a “cut and pasted” paper of others’ ideas. Your primary concern for either approach should be an examination of the work of literature you selected.

Example of a poor thesis: “Trifles is a play about a woman who murders her husband.” (not debatable)

Example of a good thesis with a formal approach: “Mrs. Wright’s bird is the symbolic key to “unlock” the reason why she killed her husband. (debatable! Requires textual support to “prove.”)

Example of a good thesis with a critical approach: “Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale share experiences from their own lives as country wives that make clear why they are empathetic to Mrs. Wright’s situation and right to withhold their discovery from their investigators.” (debatable! Requires feminist analysis of story to “prove.”)

Because you are essentially arguing that your perspective is a valid one, you have to support it effectively with evidence from the primary source that you select (direct references to specific quotations, lines, passages, scenes, etc.). Remember that an analysis is not driven by plot. It’s driven by the “idea” that you want to communicate about the story or poem. If you consult secondary sources, be sure that quotations from them do not dominate your essay. You are not writing an informational report but rather a literary analysis that requires a close reading of the text.

ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS:

Your essays should be in MLA Style and approximately 3-4 pages (not including the Works Cited page). In the upper left-hand corner of the paper, place your name, the professor’s name, the course name, and the due date for the assignment on consecutive lines. Double space your information from your name onward, and don’t forget a title. All papers should be in Times New Roman font with 12-point type with one-inch margins all the way around your paper. All paragraph indentations should be indented five spaces (use the tab key) from the left margin. All work is to be left justified. When quoting lines in literature, please research the proper way to cite short stories, plays, or poems.

As with most academic writing, this essay should be written in third person. Please avoid both first person (I, we, our, etc.) and second person (you, your).

From a Christian perspective, why did Marxist communism fail?

1.     From a Christian perspective, why did Marxist communism fail?  From a Christian point of view, Marxism failed primarily because of its atheistic perspective. Despite philosophies that are in many ways compatible to Christian ethics, both Marx himself, and the governments that chose to govern on the basis of his philosophies, expressly forbade the practice of religion. Marxist believed that under capitalism, man is alienated from other men and from himself. According to Marxist, man can only overcome alienation by doing away with private property and creating a communist society. Socialist economic policy reflects that notion by attempting to equalize the distribution of wealth and stronger governmental economic controls. As Christians God warns us not to use coervice power from the state to bend society into conformity with his kingdom. Not to fall prey to the secular myth that the state can transform you. The state can influence behavior by taking peoples property, livelihood, and families. But as shown in the rapid disappearance of communism philosphy’s influence on Eastern Europe in the 1900’s.

Database Modeling and Normalization

Assignment 4: Database Modeling and Normalization

Imagine that you work for a consulting firm that offers information technology and database services. Part of its core services is to optimize and offer streamline solutions for efficiency. In this scenario, your firm has been awarded a contract to implement a new personnel system for a government agency. This government agency has requested an optimized data repository for its system which will enable the management staff to perform essential human resources (HR) duties along with the capability to produce ad hoc reporting features for various departments. They look forward to holding data that will allow them to perform HR core functions such as hiring, promotions, policy enforcement, benefits management, and training.

Using this scenario, write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

Determine the steps in the development of an effective Entity Relationship Model (ERM) Diagram and determine the possible iterative steps / factors that one must consider in this process with consideration of the HR core functions and responsibilities of the client. Analyze the risks that can occur if any of the developmental or iterative steps of creating an ERM Diagram are not performed. Select and rank at least five (5) entities that would be required for the development of the data repositories. Specify the components that would be required to hold time-variant data for policy enforcement and training management. Diagram a possible 1:M solution that will hold salary history data, job history, and training history for each employee through the use of graphical tools in Microsoft Word or Visio, or an open source alternative such as Dia. Note: The graphically depicted solution is not included in the required page length. Plan each step of the normalization process to ensure the 3NF level of normalization using the selected five (5) entities of the personnel database solution. Document each step of the process and justify your assumptions in the process. Diagram at least five (5) possible entities that will be required to sustain a personnel solution. The diagram should include the following: Dependency diagrams Multivalued dependencies

Health Policy & Management

Core Policy Analysis

For this Application, which you will begin this week and complete by the end of next week, you are asked to analyze a core policy about health or healthcare. Examples might include policies on scope of practice for healthcare practitioners or on health insurance for children. After selecting your policy, locate resources to help you understand the specifics of it, including how its programs are organized and financed, how the services are delivered, and, generally, how well the policy has been implemented to date.

Make sure to select a policy on which you can focus in some detail. If you choose to analyze the policy on insurance for poor children, for example, you will soon discover that this policy differs from state to state, so you might wish to focus primarily on your state’s policy. Search databases to find an article explaining the background on this policy?the journal Health Affairs, for example, frequently publishes summaries on initiatives in child health insurance.

In addition, learn about the pros and cons of this policy by locating opinion statements issued by state or national organizations, such as the American Hospital Association (AHA) or American Medical Association (AMA). Many of these organizations have Web sites in which they not only explain their perspective or opinion on a policy but also have legislative sections with commentary on policy proposals currently under consideration in government.

To analyze this core policy, it is important that you gather this breadth of information. In your paper, you must cite the following:

*
At least two articles, Web sites, or other credible and neutral sources providing analysis of this core policy; at least one of these sources must be a peer-reviewed article.
*
At least two opinion statements from stakeholders regarding the policy. To find these, consider who the stakeholders would be. AMA, for example, has an important stake in whether or not children are covered by insurance or not, and would be a good source for such a statement. Look also for opinion papers from other professional or special-interest organizations. These might be on Web sites or in journals. At least one of these statements should be from a stakeholder Web site.

After reviewing these materials, write a two to three page paper in which you address the following:

1.
Summarize the policy and its main goals. Describe its implications on organization, financing, and delivery of healthcare services in the U.S.
2.
Discuss why you think this policy was introduced and any challenges it has faced. For example, has it faced major challenges in being funded or implemented?
3.
Summarize the opinions you have read. Based on this and your own understanding of the issue, do you think the policy needs to be changed significantly in order to meet its goals?
4.
Include an APA bibliography (in addition to the body of the two to three page paper), with a minimum of the four references, as described above.

Essay on the book "Heat of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad (English literature)

You are in a special warrants unit in a major metropolitan area that specifically goes after street crime suspects with violent tendencies and histories of resisting arrest by the police. You are new to the unit but have come from a very professionally run narcotics operation in which your previous team dealt with extremely violent offenders. The unit is made up of plainclothes patrol officers who carry silver badges and seasoned violent crimes detectives who carry gold badges. The badges are mounted in the outside of the police ID wallet and flip open when swung with the hand.

After about 3 weeks with the unit, you notice that everyone arrested by the unit has a welt on their forehead. You are tasked with taking a prisoner to the jail cell, and you get a close look at the welt, which reflects an obverse seal from the silver badge of the attached patrol personnel. When depositing the prisoner into the holding cell, you see another suspect who had been arrested earlier. He bears the welt reflecting the obverse seal of the gold badges of the detectives. You ask the prisoner you are placing in the cell how he got the welt, and he tells you that after he was handcuffed, one of the officers smacked him in the head with his badge and simply said, “Silver.” Upon returning to the office, you ask the supervisor about the welts on the prisoners. He laughs and says it is a competition between the silver badges and gold. Whichever group marks the most prisoners with their badge seal does not have to pay for any drinks at the off-duty party at the end of the month.

Note: This scenario is based on an actual antic of a narcotics unit operating in the late 1970s.

Please include answers in your main posting for the following questions. You must provide meaningful feedback to the main postings of at least 2 of your classmates.

What Makes Art so Valuable to Steal?

To quote the FBI Art Crime Team website, “Art and cultural property crime- which includes theft, fraud, looting, and trafficking across state and international lines- is a looming criminal enterprise with estimated losses running as high as $6 billion annually.” In 1990, paintings and other items were stolen from the Isabella Steward Gardner Museum in Boston, Massachusetts, and valued at over $500 million. They were never recovered. Your job in this assignment is to be a detective reporter for the New York Times and gain an exclusive interview with one of the following:

  • owner of a stolen art piece or
  • curator of the museum where a work of art was stolen

First Paragraph: You are not limited to the Isabella Steward Gardner Museum crime scene and may choose an art work from any of the crime scenes found in the web sites you are linked to below. When formatting your post to the Advanced Forum, include one paragraph that describes the crime scene you have chosen to study. Include the name of the stolen work, the players in the heist, such as the criminals and the museum curators, directors, detectives names. Include historical details such as the time, place and title of the stolen work, the date the work was made and the artist. .

Second Paragraph: Consider the many reasons why the work stolen is valued by a certain segment of society, other than the obvious financial one, and include those considerations in a second paragraph. Explain the New York Times interest in covering this story, since you are the reporter.

Third:  Tell us to whom you are asking your questions. Then ask your three questions. Respond to all ask of you and in at least 150 words

Provide a real life example of classical conditioning from your life experience.

Provide a real life example of classical conditioning from your life experience. Be sure to label the different components of classical conditioning in your example, namely:

Neutral Stimulus (NS)
Unconditioned Stimulus (UCS)
Unconditioned Response (UCR)
Conditioned Stimulus (CS)
Conditioned Response (CR)
Feel free to use TV commercials, music, fears or phobias, or other real world illustrations in your answer.

Here is an example post to help you get started:

“When I was a kid growing up in NY, my grandma lived in Queens in a two story brick semi-attached house near the park. Whenever I went to visit Grandma, she would always have the heat cranked up really high. As you might imagine, every time I went to visit her, I would sweat profusely. Eventually, over time, I would break out into a sweat before I even went inside Grandma’s house. I would just see her house, and start to sweat. This effect can be explained by classical conditioning, or the repeated pairing of one stimulus (the house) with another (the heat). In this example, Grandma’s house before conditioning or repeated pairing with the heat is the neutral stimulus (NS). The heat is the unconditioned stimulus (UCS) because it causes a response or reaction that did not have to be learned. It is innate or a reflex. Sweating in reaction to the heat is the unconditioned response (UCR). Again, this is an unconditioned response because your body does it automatically, without any thought. It is automatic. After repeated pairings, conditioning or learning takes place, and the neutral stimulus (NS) alone causes the sweating to occur. When the neutral stimulus (house) takes on the properties of the unconditioned stimulus (heat), conditioning or learning has taken place. In this example, Grandma’s house becomes the conditioned stimulus (CS), and sweating in reaction to just Grandma’s house (nothing else) is the conditioned response (CR).

  6. Change plan: Create a strategy to deal with potential resistance from all stakeholders involved in the running and delivery of the new programs.  For example there may be a concern in terms of increased workload, having to learn new policies and processes and the speed of the planned changes.

Development of a Healthcare Business Unit’s Strategy

HCM401 Assignment 1: LASA 2 Instructions

Identify a health care organization for which a significant amount of information is available, in books, journals, reports, or on the Internet. Conduct an audit of the organization’s strategic assets based on the information you are able to gather from various sources. The audit you conduct will not be as thorough and detailed of an audit as the organization itself might conduct as you will not have access to the same inside information as internal auditors. Do your best to gather and report the following information.

  • Start with a general description of the service that the healthcare organization provides.  Include the mission statement for the organization.  If there is not one, create one you believe would best describe the mission of the organization.
    • The first part of your audit should address the organization’s historical financial performance and its current financial condition, as described in your textbook. A lot of the necessary data can be found in the organization’s annual report and its filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and state-level government regulatory agencies. Research sources such as business journals, magazines, and other media that report on these types of organizations.
  • The second part of the audit should describe in as much detail as possible what you consider to be the major resources and competencies of the organization.  Use a SWOT chart to categorize the most relevant points (these may be more narrative than quantitatively analytical). Try to identify assets that appear to be unique to the organization and that give it some competitive advantage over its rivals. Also make a note of areas in which the organization is weak, which might be the target of strategic attacks by those rivals.
    • Now consider the activities that are described in the value chain for this organization.  Which do you believe cost the most to perform?  What factors do you base your opinion on? What do you believe can be done to reduce the costs, thereby giving this organization a competitive edge?
  • Finally, consider that this organization would like to set up a satellite office in a nearby city.  In this satellite office they will make changes to their processes to address their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.  Develop a mission statement for this satellite office.  Create four strategic goals for this office, one for each SWOT category.
