Fusion Centers Discussion

A fusion center is an information sharing center, that was created in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks. The 9/11 attacks pointed the extent of disjoint in information sharing regarding the terrorist threats and their subsequent activities. The creation of the fusion centers was seen by the U.S department of justice as a step forward towards facilitating the information flow. The center provides a platform where citizens can make calls and report about any suspicious activities, enabling the federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to make investigations and respond accordingly. Moreover, the centers act as platform where the federal level agencies, such as the FBI, CIA and state and local law enforcement can share information.

Since their inception after the 9/11 attacks, the fusion centers have been affective, playing crucial roles in addressing some of the problems identified after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The centers have seen rapid growth since their inception and this has increased information sharing. According to (WPTV News, 2011), the fusion centers receive more than 5000 calls a month. This helps in the process of gathering, analysis and sharing of information that pose threats. The 9/11 attacks could probably have been averted had there been a platform that offered the sharing of information. The creation of these centers have now improved information sharing, which helps in averting any threats through sharing of information between the local, state and federal agencies.

Although there have been fears of threats towards privacy, the centers point that the information processed is secured and once data has been analyzed and found to be clean, they are discarded immediately (WPTV News, 2011). Therefore, these centers are a step forward and effective step towards the fight towards terrorism and terrorist threats.
