How I see Myself Fitting into the Institute of Medicine Future of Nursing Recommendations – Sample Paper
The recommendations given by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), are geared to help achieve certain milestones. According to Clavelle(2012), the institute focuses on a future that will enable the nurses to practice according to their training and education and to the full extent of these. The institute also focuses on pushing the nurses to achieve higher levels of training and education. They target to achieve this through the availing of a reliable and better education system which will advocate for unified academic progression. The institute recommends that nurses be full members practicing together with physicians (Clavelle, 2012). The institute recommendations also target to have better information and data collection mechanisms that will enable them plan in advance. I foresee these recommendations affecting me in different ways.

One of IOM recommendation is to remove barriers in the scope-of-practice (Cipriano, 2011). These changes will definitely affect the future of nursing. With the removal of such, those nurses that have advanced their practice will be able to apply their skills in full. This also means that there will be better opportunities for those with higher education. This recommendation also serves as an encouragement to nurses to advance their practice. In the future, if I advance my education as a nurse, I will be able to get better opportunities that will recognize my advancement and also allow me to practice. This means better remunerations too.
Another fundamental recommendation by the IOM is to have nurses at the fore front in the development of improvement efforts (Cipriano, 2011). The institute recommends that nurses be allowed to participate together with other physicians in the diffusion of successful practices. This effort will allow nurses to participate in the improvement and redesign of health systems and practice environments. As a nurse, this will create opportunities to be able to learn from other professionals in the healthcare industry as I participate in major redesigning of the systems in place. The availability of a nurse in this process will allow the concerned parties to have another view point other than theirs on matters concerning these systems.

The recommendation by the IOM to have support for those nurses that have completed their pre-licensure with their residency programs (Clavelle, 2012)will definitely have a positive effect on my future. This recommendation means that there will be support for residency programs. It will definitely affect me as it is expected to run across the board. This coupled together with the recommendation to have the number of nurses with baccalaureate degree increased, means more opportunities and support for furthering education. Under this recommendation, I foresee the studying process being easy as the recommendation advocates for the reimbursement of tuition fees to the nurses.
