Exposure to Christianity early in life helped me to be able to differentiate right from wrong at an early age. There were common phrases that rated some deeds to hell fire that made me understand what is considered wrong and what is considered right since my childhood. With time, I came to realize that some wrongs await hellfire in the future, and others are punished right away by the government. While my foundation in Christianity made me understand the Ten Commandments, exposure in life made me understand that society considers some sins to be graver than others. As found in Exodus 20: 1-17 (ESV) though shall not murder, and though shall not steal were biblical commandments whose implementation was facilitated by the government through criminal law. This made me perceive criminology as a positive system whose main intention was to enhance people’s ability to keep the biblical law and create sanity in the society, for both Christians and non-Christians.
Christianity has played a great role in controlling people’s criminal behaviors. Christianity is founded on biblical laws, morality, and ethics in most cases. Christianity cautioned us about engagement in violent behaviors, embracing forgiveness, and caring for each other. In Ephesians 4: 32 (ESV) “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you”. The spirit of forgiveness holds so many people from engaging in violent and vengeful behaviors, reducing their collision with the law. Also as young people, we were taught about drugs and their negative effects on our bodies and life. We were taught about the biblical perception of alcohol and other addictive substances. In Romans 14: 21 (ESV) “It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.” Alcohol has been illustrated to lead some people astray in the bible and hence Christianity teaches its followers to avoid it or to avoid taking it in excess. This helps Christians from avoiding both non-violent and violent crimes including arrests due to drug use or drinking and driving among others.
Religion has a great effect on people’s social life. Traditionally, religion has served as a technique for bonding people with their societies, communities, and families, conveying societal objectives, and implanting morals in old and young alike. The religious bond holds not just families and communities together via common rituals and beliefs, but also offers a moral compass that can work as an internal social control, preventing persons from participating in antisocial behaviors, such as crime. People sent their children to religious classes such as Sunday schools and other religious classes to get teaching in discipline, values, morals, and religious culture (Salvatore & Rubin, 2018). This increases the chances of raising morally upright kids that are more likely to avoid behaviors that are likely to land them in the criminal justice system.
Christianity generally helps in reinforcing the natural law in-printed in the human conscious. They get to know right from wrong and get to know how to avoid wrong behaviors by learning virtues such as forgiveness, fortitude, temperance, prudence, and justice. Building more on what is right helps in ensuring that people remain conscious of what they do. They also get to learn that although in God there is forgiveness, there is also a consequence of sins, and hence one cannot just sin arrogantly because there is forgiveness. For instance in Galatians 6:7-8 (ESV) “Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” Christians are cautioned on the consequence of sin. This forced people to focus on being righteous rather than dealing with the consequences of sin. This help in reducing crimes among members of the Christian community.
