MyPlate – Healthy People 2020

Healthy People 2020 identify objectives related to nutrition and food safety. What are your thoughts on MyPlate? How do you think it compares to other versions of daily requirements? Do you think MyPlate would work in your population? Why? Or why not?

The Healthy 2020 initiative recently identified nutrition and food safety as health-related spheres requiring immediate attention within the United States. Among its main objectives is transforming food practices while also making certain that foodborne illnesses are histrionically reduced. Healthy 2020’s objective is motivated by the fact that foodborne represent a growing public health concern responsible for a stark rise in preventable deaths. This ultimately leads to significant costs in health care for a sizeable population and a seemingly insurmountable challenge for at-risk populations (Edelman et al., 2018).

Similarly, MyPlate is a contemporary campaign introduced by the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion to serve as a fitting guide for nutrition. The MyPlate logo is now openly exhibited on food packaging with the aim of educating consumers about the nutritional value of specific items (Bauer et al., 2015, p. 57). I firmly believe that MyPlate is a positive approach to nutrition bound to improve the health and well-being of Americans through proper diet. Its guidelines balance the intake of vegetables, grains, fruits, and dairy products. Compared to the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines and Reference Daily Intake (RDI), MyPlate offers a concise nutritional parameter which consequently ensures that individuals consume a balanced diet by relying on the four main food groups.

MyPlate recommends that individuals consume about 10 percent fruits, 20 percent protein, 30 percent grains, 40 percent vegetables and the remainder on a portion of dairy products (“MyPlate Plan,” 2019). Thus, I firmly believe that MyPlate would work if applied in my local Carson City, Nevada population. It will provide a robust structure for individuals to consume a balanced diet which will ultimately improve their health and vitality. Furthermore, it will also be fitting for organizational structures within the jurisdiction seeking to promote a balance between calorific intake and a concomitant level of physical activity to help address the obesity epidemic.
