This study highlight how St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital utilizes social media networking to reach out for individuals especially fresh graduates and social workers to participates in service-learning program in the organization.
Audience
The target audiences for this study are the students from medical training colleges and university who are expected to enroll into a service-learning program. Also, this study targets health care professionals who wish to offer their service and expertise voluntarily. The target students should have the passion in the medical research especially in pediatric(Warden, 2015). Since St, Jude Children’s Research Hospital specialize its clinical service to only research and finding cure to cancer, blood disorder and HIV/AIDS affecting children and adolescent, the target audience should be ready to deal with these diseases during their service-learning program. It is also important to understand that service-learning program available in St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is beyond medical research and provision of medical service to children. It include children’s play zone(Warden, 2015). Therefore, this research also target individuals who are ready to volunteer to assist children to engage in fun activities such as learning to ride a bicycle and play different gaming activities.
Methods
The study uses 36 survey questions that seek to collect data categorically and quantitatively. Specifically, these questions captures the data on the usage of social media networking, attitudes towards service-learning program, knowledge and demographics. Out of the 36 questions, six questions were design particularly to capture in-depth information about service-learning program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (St. Jude Medical Center, 2016). For instance, a responses to one question by a participant determines the next logical question for him/her to respond to. Earlier studies indicated that this method of approach enabled the researchers to get more information on targeted areas such as service-learning programs at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the content of webpage and social media networking sites for St. Jude(St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 2015). The survey is conducted online by uploading the question to Surveymonkey.com and creating a link to the survey page for the respondents to access. The survey target respondents between the age of 20 and 50 years.
Results
Based on earlier studies the likely results will be that majority of the individuals seeking service-learning programs lack the information about clinical services and children activities available offered by St. Jude Children Research Hospital. Also, the expected result is that St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital webpage highlights service-learning and volunteering opportunities available for individuals to take-up. The service-learning and volunteering site shows all the children’s activities offered under the program and the number of volunteers accommodated annually(St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 2015). Further results expected are that majority of individuals seeking service-learning and volunteering opportunities uses Facebook, followed by twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn and others
