Eukaryotic vs. Prokaryotic Cells
The cell based on the cell theory is the primary unit of life. Each living organism contains one or more cells. According to cellular structure organization, all living cells are categorized into two classes which include eukaryotic and prokaryotic. Prokaryotic is a kind of cell found in bacteria while Eukaryotic is a form of cell found in algae, protozoans, plants fungi and animals. The difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes is regarded as the most essential difference among categorizes of organisms. Eukaryotic cell has membrane-bound organelles that include nucleus, whereas prokaryotic cells do not have them. Eukaryotic is a multi-cellular cell that contains chloroplasts in plants and mitochondria. One the other hand prokaryotic is a unicellular cell and it lacks both chloroplast and mitochondria. In addition, eukaryote contains two or more chromosomes, while prokaryotes contain one untrue chromosome known as plasmids (Alexander & Lee, n.d.).
Eukaryotic cell is 10 – 100 um in size with vacuoles, with a chemically simplifies cell wall for fungi and plants. It also has a nuclear membrane with selective permeability. It also contains flagella that are microscopic in size and that contain membrane bound that is normally ordered as nine doublets enclosing two singlets. It also has cytoskeleton, larger ribosomes and vesicles. Moreover, eukaryotes enfold their DNA around histones proteins.
On the contrary, prokaryotic is a small cell (1-10µm), with vacuoles and chemically complex cell wall. Unlike eukaryotic, prokaryotic cell do not have plasma, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and golgi apparatus. It contains submicroscopic flagella which are composed of just one fiber. It also has multiple protein which act together to condense and fold its DNA. The folded DNA is subsequently organized into a number of conformations which are wounded and supercoiled around the HU protein tetramers (Alexander & Lee, n.d).
